Advance Payments. We notice sev
eral of our exchanges comes to us with
notices that hereafter their terms will be
advance payments for subscriptions and
cash for advertisements at the time of in
sertion. We do not wonder at this. It
has become a necessity. Every thing
used in the printing line is about as high
in price as at any previous time during
the war, and has to be paid in cash. Prin
ters must have an extraordinary good es
tablishment or a big purse to carry on
business any length of time, paying their
current expenses in cash and waiting for
their own pay one. two, three or mora
years. That kind of business don't pay
As a necessity, then, advance and cash
payments for subscription and advertising
will soon have to become general. Prin
ters are entitled to their day as well as
other people.
A Mistake Our friend Swank, of
the Johnstown Tribunr, gives a pleasant
and entertaining account of his visit to
Ebensburg. He is mistaken, however, in
pronouncing John Willia ms Esq., as tho
oldest native of Cambria county. Mi
chael M'Guire, of Allegheny township, is
entitled to that distinction ; and we believe
his cousin, Luke M'Guire, is also older
than Mr. Williams. When, however,
our friend speaks of the worth and high
moral character of Mr. "Williams, he cer
tainly makes no mistake.
Fire is Altoona. On Thursday
afternoon last, the rustic window-blind
manufactory owned by Mr. Adams, was
discovered to be on tire. Before anything
could be done to check the llames, they
burst out through the windows, and soon
the whole building was destroyed. It
belonged to the heirs of Abraoa Beale,
deceased, und was insured lor $000, which
ucc not cover the loss. The stock in the
manufactory was insured at 3,000,
which falls 2,000 short of covering tho
loss.
Fatal Accident. Monday evening,
about six o'clock, while a railroad em
ployee at Johnstown, named John Taylor,
was engaged iu shovelling snow from the
track in the vicinity of the Cambria Iron
Works, a locomotive passed over him,
cutting on botn ins legs, ana mangling
his body in a frightful manner, from the
effects of which he died in a few minutes.

several children.

JviiJ.ED. On Friday night, 7th inst.,
15. L. Huckley of Altoona, formerly of
Newton Hamilton, 'engaged as a brake
man on a freight train, fell from the train
in the vicinity of Mapleton Station and
was run over and instantly killed. He
was aged about 4.5 years, and left a
wife and three children.
Kesigxep. On Saturday last, Kev.
T. r. Wilson, pastor of tho Presbyterian
Church of this place, handed in his resig
nation, on account of his ill health, which
was accepted by the congregation. His
departure is to be sincerely regretted, and
his place as a minister and gentleman will
not easily be supplied.
New Paper. Last week we received
the lirst number of a new paper called The
leader, published at Hollidaysburg, Pa.,
by John H. Keatley, Esq. It is devoted
to the cause of Temperance, and will no
doubt do a deal of good in the cause to
which it is dedicated.
Enlauged. The Huntingdon Monitor
came to us enlarged and otherwise im
proved. It is now one of the largest and
best conducted newspapers in the district,
and will undoubtedly do good battle for
Democracy in Huntingdon county.

Dear Sentinel : According to promise, I
seat myself to transmit you a few fleeting
observations and impressions of your hum
ble servant, in this railroad city. In con
trast with your quiet, social village,
Altoona seems to be a perfect bee-hive.
Everybody seems to be in a hurry ; all
are so engrossed with business that they
, find no time to devote an hoip; to ihat
social intercourse which njjj"i'(Tour vil
lage so pleasing to visitors. kp & the com
ing month promises to be an?xception to
the general rule, as there is a f air in full
blast in the basement of the Catholic
church of this place j which I visited last
night. As it was the first night of the
Fair, of course it could not be expected to
be so well patronized as it will be herej
after. The ladies deserve much credit for
their taste, energy and patience. I un
derstand the proceeds of this enterprise
will be applied to educational require-:
ments ; as the Catholics, generally, do not
avail themselves cf the advantages of the
Common schools ; although they contri-.
bute their quota of taxes for their mainte
nance. 1 doubt it there is any other
denomination which would make the same
sacrifice to maintain their principles ; for,
in general, this denomination is composed
of the poor, hard-working portion of tho
community ; yet they not only build their
own school-houses and support their-own
schools, but in a great measure give to a
portion of their dissenting brethren, an
education jrratis.
The Catholics are not so singular in
this course now, as formerly ; for I observe
the officers of the P. R 1. . Co., of this
place, have erected, at their own . private
expense, a beautiful Utile school-house,
and have employed competent teachers,
exclusively fur their own children.. The
Episcopalians and Presbyterians, I under
stand, have their own schools, also. I
judge from the muttering I heard, that
there will be a lively time of it here, as
there is another Fair to be held on the 8th
of January, 18C7, for the purpose,- is
said by the projectors, of erecting a "Na
tional Monument" to the memory of the
heroes wo fell in defense of the Union.
Of course, in every community you will
find some grumblers, who seldom do any
thing themselves and who are always ready
to find fault with what others are doin.
Of thi3 class, some assert that it would
evince much more patriotism and respect
for the fallen heroes, if the funds to be
used in errcting the monument were ap
plied to relieve the widows and orphans
of those heroes ; many of whom need it,
especially at this inclement season. : Others
eay it is a political clap-trap, by which
some of the parties wish to gain populari
ty and thereby succeed in serving the
"dear good people" in soino official but
paying capacity. Others say that they
3re williug to do all they can for the Fair,
providing the monument be erected in
some public place, in a more central part
of the town ; as all the heroes are not
buried in Fairview Cemetry ; and they
think the managers of this Cemetry wish
to beautify their grounds at the public ex
pense, and it will be an enticement for
many to buy lots therein the stock of the
Company will o up, and it will be a pay
ing piece of patriotism. I think that the
objections of the last mentioned class are
very well founded ; for this monument is
either a Congressional, county, or bprough
affair ; if Congressional, Hollidaysburg or
Huntingdon should be the site, if a county
matter, then Hollidaysburg, thes county
seat should decidedly be the place, as the
remains of the brave but much lamented
Col. Murray lie there. If it bo a borongh
matter, then I think the site should be in
some central part of the town, in a public
square ; or they should gather up tho re
mains of those lamented heroes, who are
buried in the other graveyards of the
place, and put them in one common grave
yard, Fairview Cemetry or any other.
But among them be it.
