this one of the most commodious tavern

Every arrival from Charleston confirms
Ihe accounts we have already printed of
tleiwral Sherman's advance up Broad
river. We now have intelligence that
General Hatch, commanding the advance
of Sherman's and Foster's combined ar
mies, has captured Poeotnligo bridge, on
the Charleston and Savannah railroad.
Hatch lost about forty men killed ami
wounded in this advance. He captured
twelve cannon that the enemy spiked
upon leaving the place. I 'oeotHhgo bridge
is a hng trestle work over a swamp and
river which extends for over a mile. The
Federal troops, however, failed in the
main object intended by this advance.
They wished to cut off the retreat of, and
if Hssible capture the Confederates who
had been west of l'ocotaligo and at CJra
hamsville. The Confederates retreated
'uo quickly, however, and got east of l'o
cotaligo before the Federal advance
'ached there. The position now occu
pied by the Confederates is a strong one,
n the east side of the Combahee river,
Rear the village of Sackehachie, fifty miles
it of Charleston. Sherman is gradu
ally concentrating all Ids troops at Ioco
taligo. and before very long will have an
array of sixty thousand men there. He
ve- in Savannah a garriaon of fifteen
There are all sorts of rumors of-movements
by the Federal army against Wil
mington. There is no foundation for any
of them. General Terry would not ad
vance against Wilmington, with the small
army he now has only six thousand
troops. He has not been reinforced
The Confederates are intrenched on Fed
eral Point, north of Fort Fisher. On
January 1 8th, last Wednesday, every
thing was quiet.
The Federal monitor Patapsco, which
has been for some time on the Picket line
of the blockading fleet at Charleston, has
leen blown up by a torjredo. The mind
tor filled and sank almost immediately,
and forty or fifty of the crew, who could
not get out of their living prison, were
carried down with her.
Francis P. Hlatr, it is reported, left
Washington yesterday on a second mis
sion to liichmond.
Over thirteen hundred prisoners of
State are now confined in the Old Capitol
prison at Washington. Age.
FrOtiJ Savannah.
Nbw Yokk, Jan. 2i). Advices by the
steamer Fulton from Savannah report
that the lest of order is maintained in
the city and few soldiers are visible on
the streets. Trade is limited, but the
prices are regulated by law. Just Itefore
leaving Atlanta the soldiers were paid off,
and they spent their money freely at the
first opportunity. One firm disposed of
a stock valued "at $153,000 for $4 17,000.
It is said there is not as much sutfering
in Savannah as was reported, for the rea.
son that when Hardee evacuated the city,
and before Sherman took possession, they
entered the stores and supplied themselves
with good stocks. The wealthy citir.ms,
however, did not join in this raid, and, as
a consequence, may now be suffering. It
is for these, then, that the subscriptions at
the North are being taken, and the move
ment is very unpopular among the sol
diers, who consider it as giving aid and
comfort to the enemies of their country.
The Ohio primers, in convention
assembled, have voted to increase the
price of weekly papers to $2,50 per year.
Cheap enough.
si A joint commit e of both branches
of Congress have commenced to investi
gate the Indian frauds. They have a
lengthy and terrible task before them.
