insolent, advisedly, oeeause us lono is
moro that of a feudcl lord summoning his
vassals than that of a request from the
chief servant of a free people. 1 waive
the disproportion of the quota awarded to
New York, it having heen already alluded
to in your columns, and pass tolho gen
eral matter of the call, which is of vital
interest to nil the country, and csecially
to women, on whom is to lay the heaviest
part of the burden.
For what on earth, Mr. Kditor. are five
hundred thousand more men required
Already the country is half depopulated
of its strength and sinew; already pro
duction is so greatly lessoned as to threat
en the most serious consequences ; al
ready there are hundreds of thousands uf
starving widows, and orphans, winch the
country cannot take care ol, and what ;
nre to become of five hundred thousand j
more? For it is a settled thing that j
nearly every man who joins our nnmes
goes down to his death, only ah; lit or!-.; j
in ten esc:qe, and though it may be an
easy th'ng for men in power to "calf fur j
the lives of five hundred thousand me n,
it is often starvation and d--ath to thoe
they leave behind. Where are the sever,
hundred thousand men stated by Senator
Wilson, to be in arms since the commenc
ment of this canmaiirn ? It is of no on-
vuuence to .Mr. Lincoln, Mr. So ward or ' I'hyfical Incapacity. Imi ediments in Jhr

mothers, .si iters and chiMreu at home.
Already the nia.-scs of the wom-m in
this country are pu.-l.ed to the verge of
endurance. Tell them to economize in
the purchase of silks an d foreign good s !
Wliv. thev can scarcely r.Uoivl to mtv

They are obliged to feed themselves and

where it can be had for the picking. J
I do not believe in fighting for the j
country and the llag to the last ma;:, and j
it seems to me anybody is an idiot who I
talks such nonsense. What would the
country be worth to mt: or any other wo- j
man, if the ''last man" was gone .' an 1 '
what is it worth to a man, when he ha-: ;
left it to enter that from which no traveler j
returns I know it is usual lo talk about
the blessings secured to posterity, but j
the idea of doing anything for posterity!
unless it it to nlant some apple-trees, is i
nonsense, posterity never appreciates it,
and will be just as likely to possess some .
fools, who cannot let well enough alone, j
ami wdio deligJit in picking quarrels, as j
this feneration. 1 ue be.-t way to secure j
blessings to posterity is to secure thein,
and be thankful for them ourselves, and
how posterity is going to be beunelitted
bv the killing olf of all the able bodied
men. and the ruin an 1 desolation of the
country, I cannot conceive. j
If there was a prospect of a termina- i
tion to the war, and this was the last call J
for five hundred thousand men, the thought
would be less dislu-artning but theie is
no prospect for anything but an intermi
nable war, and a constant suece.-sion of
calls for five hundred thousand men, who
will disappear in the same malestrom,
until the List, indeed, follow their brothers
and kindred to their late.
Men, who would rather run than fight j
any lay, ami who, it they are drafted,
will hasten in abject terror to the first
emigrant ship which arrives, to secure a
substitute, talk loudly about the glory of
fighting and dying for one's llag and one's
country. What is one's llag an I one's
country ? It is not a strip of rag, or a
little dirt, a few stones and seme water:
these can be found any where, and d':nand j
no especial consideration. I four country j
and our flag are dear, it is because they j
represent to us a larger proportion of the
blessings that make life desirable, than
can be found clswhcre. If these are j
