Ihey arc empowered to contract for us at our LOWEST TEEMS. Krotlicr Barker: We have no intention of going into an elaborate reply to, or analyzatiou cf the three or four columns of malicious slang con cerning us, in.the last Allejhaniun. By do ing so, we would extend more attention to the impotent malice cf the old Mountebank than it deserves. We shall notice only cue or two points which seem to merit some consideration, and then dismiss the subject. With regard to the movement which was fctartcd last summer, for the purpose of pro curing the destruction of this establishment by an infuriated mob, it is well known that it was carried on under the special patron age rf old Barker, lie was the soul of the o movement, and it was not his fault that it f ., , lvt 5t wa, veil for him and his , l , myrmidons that it end fad. If tncj ; made the attempt, he and h,s cowar,.y , crew would have met with a reception, the . recollection of which they would have car- j them to their craves. The assertion i that a treasonable Extra, or ..no sympathi zing w ith the reW-ls, was ever issucl from this office, is a bold and malicious lie. manu- factured out of the whole cloth, without j even the shadow t f truth to sustain it. But old Barker thought to take Advantage of the excitement of the hour, be-fore it had Eubsided, aud common sense had once nvro gained the ascendency, to procure the de etriiction cf he only Democratic paper then published in the ce.unty. He iould then, he felt, have the game in his own hands. He and Vis deputies, would then be at lib erty to publish whatever lies suited them ; for, the Democrary would be without the means of contradicting them. And yet the old Mountebank who thus attempted to give h fatal stab to the libcrtj of the press and the freedom cf speech in this ceunty, hypo critically pretends to be the friend e'f liber ty in its broadest and most unqualified sene so much so that he is in favor of emancipating the negro slaves in the South ern States and raiding them to a social and political equality with white men. He is in favor of giving negroes rights to which thej arc not entitled , and at the same time, in favor of depriving white men ot the rights with which the Gexl of Nature has en dowed them Nothing is mere justly dear to the American people than the liber ty cf the press". To a free nation it is of inesti mable value, and formidable to tyrants on ly. If it were in our power to address ev ery citizen of the Republic, wc would say to them, adopting the language of another " Let it never be forgotten let it be instil led into your childreu. that the Liberty of the Tress is the palladium of all your ciril political and religious rights as Ameri can citizens, and it is therefore your duty to guard its preservation with sleepless care. The price of liberty is eternal vigilance." Barker was the leader ot the men who plot ted the destruct'u n of the liberty of the press in this county. He and his followers are Welcome: to all the glory and shame of the attempt. The people will not soon for get them for it. We certainly have no reason to feel ashamed e-f our course during the campaign last fad. It was nobly sus tiined by the Democracy of Cambria. Bar ker and his deputies falsely charged us with being a traitor and a secessionist. The gallant Mountaineer repudiated the lie by 1,100 of a majority a Democratic gain in one v ear cf TOO votes. While we wore tri umphantly sustained, old Barker received a rebuke so blighting, so withering, that if he had not liocn dead to the feelings of shame honor and manhood, it would have caused him to t-hrink away from the public gaze, ahaoied of the ccntempt, scorn and odium be had by his ccur?c drawn on hiin-.elf and lis political hangers c-u. Rut you might as gcmocrat aiib well attempt to pierce the bide of an old Rhinoceros (to which animal he bears a strong resemblance, both physically and mentally) with a rifle ball, as to make him feel his own baseness by pointing out the cirors of his political career. He is cither too ignorant, to stupid or too egotistical, to know when he has by hi3 course as a would be politician, rendered himself an object for scorn to point her slow unmoving finger at. With regard to Brother B.i:ker, we deem t ouly necessary for the present to keep a ew f.icts before the people, the truth of which he dare notboldly and manfully deny. They arc as follows : 1st. lie is in favor of emancipating the slaves in the Southern States. and raising the negroes in ever- part of the Union, to a poli tical and social equality with the white race 2d. He is so ignorant and illiterate, as to be incapable of writing even the weak and scurrillous editorials, which appear in the Alleyhanian. There are a ftw facts. We think all our readers will agree, that they amount to in finitely more, than all the malicious abuse that lias yet been heaped on us by Brother Barker's pet puppies, the deputy -d iters. We think it unnecessary to remind our reader?, that the controversy which has been going ou for several months between the editor of this paper and the responsible editor of the AlUfjlinian,. was not ot our seeking fact which all who have perused the editorial in the AUeghatiian, since Bar ker took charge of it, well know. He and bis deputies, signalized the beginning of their career jus editors, by making a fierce attack on our character as a man and patriot. Wc e-f course, felt i to be our duty to meet the assault with the spirit and energy of a man, who, knowing big rights dare maintain them. D uring the -"political campaign which closed on the ser.T Tues day of last October, we put t'if in -through in a manner that elicited the unanimous approval of the Democracy of this County. After the election, we were willing to elrop the controversy, but Barker and his depu ties would not permit us to do so. Wo therefore felt it to be our duty to return evjry blow we received, with double inter est, and our readers should remember that if we occasionally hud on th: lash without mercy, the provocation we received for so doing, was by no means trifling. We have never willfully attempted to wound the fee lings of any man living, unless he had in the first place attempted to wound ours. During the progress .f the controversy, we have repeatedly charged Barker with being an Abelitionist, and stated the ficts on which we relied, to substantiate the charge.
