Bat what need has the farmer of Looks b-
yond the biolo and almanac, ins duty 13 to ,
labor as bia strength will admit, aod when lie
has done hia work for the day, he will be tir
ed enough to go to ted, without nodding
over a book written by some idle person who
is too lazy to work. Such has been the fad
ing of lbs mass of cultivators of the soil, but
is now happily changing. No man needs a
good library more than the farmer. He has
a profession that as really requires study to
master it as the lawyer's or teacher's. There
is hardly a branch of natural science that will
contribute greatly to his bonefit. He also
neods books upon horses, cattle, sheep; the
management of the dairy; the care of the bees;
the proper way to raise apple", pears, and
other fruits; the treatment of different soils,
&c. In addh ion to these, the farmer should
bave books of literature, hitory and traveld.

Frozeiiii'lant-.
If this Wiiter Is like all that have prece
ded it in our day, many plants and vegetable
will ba frozen. Some still, clear night, Jack

will also find his way iuto the lady's parlor or
chamber, where she keeps her house-plants,
and ah me! next ruoruing. her sweet pa's will
be a3 rigid as the artificial flowers oa her bon
net. The bundle of trees which I ordered so
late, from & Go's, nursery, will be de-
tained on the way, and I thail receive them
all frozen together, as bard as logs.
Now. what shall be done iu these several
cases? Shall the potatoes and apples be
drenched with warm water to take out the

frozen; close the window shutters or drop the
curtains, so as to n:ike th r.tom quite dark,
then f-prinkle the plants with col l water di
rect from the cistern, and wait for the result

last winter, aod the frost was so severe that
the water froze in drops oa the leave as wo
sprinkled thm, but by keeping the room dark
and cool an entire day, nearly every plant
cam out unharmed. We remember, in par
ticular, a fuchsia which was in full flower at
the time of the freezing; a week after it was
still covered with blooms. A neighboring
gardner had the misfortune, alio, to bave a
large lot of geraniums frozen. Iu his auxie
ty, ho harried a part into a warm green-house
and a part iuto a cellar. The first were near
ly all ruined, the latter were all saved
The package of frozed trees must b taken
to the garden, a trench dug large and deep
enough to receive them root aud braueh, aud
then they should be covered witb soil. The
gradual thawing iu the dark will undoubtedly
save them American Agriculturist.

Prof. James E Johnson, of Scotland, says:
"Upwards of half the saline matter of the
blood (56 per ce-jt.) coasisU of common salt;
and as this is partly discharged every day
through the skin and kidneys, the- necessity
of continued supplies of it to toe healthy b ody
becomes sufficiently obvious The bile also
contains soda (one of the iugredieota of salt)
as a special and iodispensible constituent, and
so do all the cartilages of the body. Stint the
supply of salt therefore, and neither will the
bile be able properly to assist digestion," nor
the eartillages to be built up again as fat as
they naturally waste."
It Is better to placa salt where stock can
bave free access to it, that to give it occa
sionally in large quantities. They will help
themselves lo what tbey need if allowed to do
no at pleasure: otherwke, when they become
salt hungry" they may take more than is
wholesome.
