Winter 3Iulcli!nsr. At the commencement of winter, those who have young trees liable to be injured by cold n..,' Jh5r.li t..l h'uk culture, will find an es pecial advantage iu appljdug a winter mul ching of short manure. This treatment 13 eminently useful for dwarf pears. Protect ing well the part below ground, is of use to the exposed portions above in the same way that a macs feet and ears have been found to keep warmer on a cold day, when his body is well cl thel. The beet time in the year'to manure trees, is lite in autumn. If eppiied earlier, it pre vents proper cultivation; and if in spring, its protecting influence is lost, and the liquid port iocs do not become so well diffused through the soil by the time growth commences The manure should hi short, (not necessarily rot ted,) to prevent attracting mice; or if short manure cannot be had, a small cone of fresh earth should be raised around each tree eight or ten inches high, which will effectually ex clule mice. In the spring, the macura is ppaded in, if in a garden, or worked under by means of a gang-plow, if in an orchard kept clean by horse power. Rural affairs Protecting Grape Vines. A grea: variety cf methods are employed in protecting grape vices in winter. The eas iest and best way to trim them late in the fall tie them up in convenient clusters, place them on the ground, and cover them with two boards nailed together in the form of a gutter. A little dirt may be thrown on the boards, particularly along under the edge, to keep out the water, and if the vines are in a cold ex posed position, the boards should be covered entirely with earth, but not enough to keep them so warm as to stimulate their growth. They should be kept as cool as possible with out frezing and thawing. It is hazardous to put anything on the vines which would invite the mice. Those vines which are too tender to be protected by some such simple method, mro not worth growing in this northern lati latitude, unless they are grown exclusively in hot houses, or carefully built graperies. Winter Protection- It is best not to cover raspberries, grape vines, ect., till winter is close at hand, as they will ripen and harden better if exposed till that period. Grape vines' are often sufficiently protected if simply laying flat on the ground or at most, with an inch or two of soil. The same remark will apply to the raspberry and blackberry. Caution is needed in the use of straw around fruit trees, as it may encourage the depreda tion of mice. If covering the stemp, it should not be clojely tied about them, as the circulation of some air is best. Evergreen bough pla ced about any tender trees, afford the best and safest protection. The thicker the coat they form, the more complete will the cover ing be. Rural Affairs. Eur Fattening Sheep. There i nothing equal to good clover hay. We have known sheep to increase over two pounds per week, on clever hay alone for four months. They were Southdowns, and ate about three pound each per day. A little grain or oil cake can be fed wjth profit if the increased value of th manure is taken into consideration. Corn is nearly, if not quite as fattening as peas or cake, but the manure is by no rceanfc as val uable Thus the manure from a ton of Indi an corn is worth, according to the highest English authority, 0,65, while from a ton of peas it is worth $13,38, 4Dj from a ton 0f oil cake 19,72. Barley and oats are about equal to corn in this respect. The crop of unusually heavy, and they will doubtless be cheap We need not say that they are ex cellent for sheep- Guano for Grape. In a prize essay on the cultivation of grapes in the Colony of Viola tori, it is stated that guano had been used on grape vines with much benefit. "The first year of its application it had no visible eff ect on the stocks; the second it produced much wood and larger berries, but no increased quantity of bunches; but in the third year it was astonishing to observe the great differ ence between twelve rows that had been ma nured at all; the former looked healthy, dark green, had long Ftrong branches loaded with large bunches of fruit, and far more ad vanced than others in their neighborhood." How CurnAs Effect Horses. The carrot is the most esteemed of all roots for its feed ing qualities When annalyzed, it gives but little more solid matter than any other root, eighty-five per cent beiDg water; but its influ ence in the stomach upon the other articles of food is most favorable,- conducting to the most perfect digestion and assimilation. The re sult, long known to practical men, is explain ed by chemists as resulting from the presence of a substance called prctine, which operates to coagulate or gelatinize vegetable solutions, and this favors digestion in all cattle. Hor ses are especially benefited by the use of car rots They should be fed to them frequently with their other food. American, Stock Tuttrnal. , Rallitt from Trees. A correspondent of the Prairie Farmer says trees may be pro tected from Babbits by a wash of soft soap, in which is mixed sulphor. A little clay in the mixture will prevent the soap from wash ing off by winter storms. Pat it on with a paint bru&h or a stiff white wash brush, or any new or old broom, and if none these re bandy take jour bands, any way at all eo yon get it on. 50,000 COPIES ALREADY SOLD. Sanctified by the highest Medical Authorities, both in Europe and the Luded States, and prescribed in their practice. The experience of thousands daily proves that no preparation of Iron can be compared with it. Impurities of, the blood, depression of vital en ergy, pale and otherwise sickly complexions in dicate its necessity in almost every conceivable case. Innoxious In all malladies in which it has been tried, it has proved absolutely curative in each of the following complaints, viz: In Debility. Nervous Ajfections, Emaciation, Dusrama, Constipation, Diarrhoea. Dysentery, Incijiieid Consumption, S-rfvlous Tuberculosis, Salt Rheum, Mismcnstruation, Whiles, Chlorosis, Liver Coi'njJainis, Chrome lleaaacJtes, Uieuma tism, Intermittent Fevers, PimjAcs ou the Face, C. In cases of General Debility, whether the re sult of acute disease, or of the continual dimi nution of nervous and muscular energy from Chronic complaints one trial of this restorative has proved successful to au extent which no description nor written attestation would render credible. Invalids so long bed-ridden as to have become forgotton in their own neighboi hoods, have suddenly re-appeared, in the busy world as if just returned from a protracted travel in a distant land. Some very signal instances of this kind arc attested of female Sufferers, emaciated victims of apparent marasmus, sanguineous "ex haustion, critical changes, and that complication of nervous and dyspeptic aversion to air and exercise for which the physician has no name. In Nervous Affections of all kinds, and for reasons familiar to Medical men, the operation of this preparation of Iron must necessarily be salutary, for, unlike the old oxides, it is vigor ously tonic, without being exciting aud over heating, and ently, regularly ajienent, even in the most obstinate cases of costiveness without ever being a gastric purgative or inflicting a dis- ajrreeable sensation. It is this latter property, Among other which make? it so remarkably effectual and permanent a remedy for Piles, upon which it also appear to exert a distinct and specific action, by dis persing the local tendency which forma them. In Dyspepsia innumerable as are its causes, a single box ef these Chalvbeate Pills has- often sufficed for the most habitual cases, including the attendant coxtireness. - In unchecked Diarrhoea, even when advanced to Dysentarv, confirmed emaciating and appa rently malignent, the effects have been equally decisive and astonishing. In the local pains, loss of flesh and strength. debiliatihg cough, and remittent hectic, which generally indicates Incipient Consumption, this remedy has allayed the alarm cf friends and physicians, in several very gratifying and in teresting instances. In Scrofulous Tuberculsis, this medicated iron has had far more than th good effect of the most cautiously balanced preparations of idioue. without any of their well known liabilities. The attention of females cannot le too confi dently invited to this remedy and restorative, in thecaces peculiarly affecting them. In Rheumatism, both Chronic and infl amatory in the latter, however, more decidedly it has been invariably well reported, both as alleviating pain and reducing the swellings and stifness f the joints and muscles. In Intermittent fevers it must necessarily be a great remedy and energetic restorative, and its progress in the new settlements cf the West will probably be one of high renown and usc ulness. No remedy has ever been discovered in the whole his tory of medicine, which exerts such prompt, happy and fully restorative effects. Good appetitee, complete digestion, rapid ac quisition of strength, with an unusual disposi tion for active and cheerful exercise, immediate lyfollow its use. Put up m neat flat mettal boxes containing 50 pills, price 50 cents per box; for sale by drug gists and dealers. Will be sent free to any ad dress on recti pt of the price.
