if the latter, instead of being cut and carted j
off the lnd. Lad been turned under it. those j
fields, now looking" so barren and forlorn,
would have been more fertile at this day than
they were when the plow turned the first fur
row iu the virgin roil. But old habits are
still stronger, with many well-meaning and
, than the ei-
undeniably industrious farmers
cellent example set them by the men who
have had the sagacity and force of character
to lift themselves out of the ruts and grooves
in hich men lesar enterprising, or more wed- j
ded to their own opinion, and still content to
travel. The same causes, at the present day i

If we work a eoil and do not restore it to
those organic and inorganic constituents which
are essential to keep up its productiveness,
shall reap, year by year, fewer bushels of
grain, and cut fewer tons of hay, and at length
it will refuse to make any returns at all. Tbe
law of compensation is an inexorable one:
"Give and I will requite." This is the law,
and it cannot be violated with impunity. But
a better day we trust, is now dawning. Mi
gration to the new lands of the far West in
volves a journey almost to the base of the
Rocky Mountains, and men are beginibg to
perceive that it is better to adopt a system of
farming which experience has proved to be
profitable, than to continue to travel in an
cient ways, which lead inevitably to a break
down. Our lands will not continue to deter
iorate much longer. Men are slowly becom
ing more enlightened to their true interests,
and more willing to follow the example set
them by their successful neighbors. Boston

POTATOES.
ine ionowing memoa oi storing potatoes ,
for winter, as practiced by G. F. Adams, of
MM It .1 j -a- . i
Peoria, 111., is worthy of attention by all
dwellers upon a somewhat damp 6oil, like
that of most of the western prairie land:
He says, "I selected a knoll and dug on
the top a pit 12 feet long, 5 feet wide and 4
feet deep. In the bottom I put three cross
timber e, a foot thick, aud ou tham laid a floor
and then boarded up the Bides six inches from
the earth wall. I then took care to have the
potatoes thoroughly dry, and all defec
tive ones sorted over, and with careful band
ling I filled the bio and covered it with straw
and on that about a foot of earth, and there
the potatoes kept till spring in first-rate order.
I found water under the floor, which would
have tended to the ruin of the potatoes if it
had come in contact with them, a it had it
former years, when they were stored in the
common way. Tbe air around the heap keeps
it from freezing.
This matter of storing roots for winter is a
vory important subject, and it should attract
the attention of all farmers at this season,
when the cold nights of Aututni give him
notice that freezing ones are at band.
Stlclt this up.
As the following table of the number of
pounds to the bushel, may be of interest to
the farmer and dealer, we publish it, and
would advise them to cut it out and stick it
up in some promient place for reference:
Of wheat, sixiy pounds,
Of shell-corn, fifty-six pounds,
Of corn in the cob, seventy pounds,
-Of rye, fifty-six pounds,- . .
Of barley, forty-eight pounds.
Of potatoes, sixty-pounds.
Of beans, sixty pounds,
Of brajx, twenty pounds.
"Of clover seed, sixty pounds.
Of timothy seed, forty-five pounds,
Of fiaxsocd, fifty-eight pounds,
Of berup seed, fifty-jour pounds,
Of buckwheat, fifty-two pounds.
Of blue grass seed, fourteen pounds.
Of castor beans, thirty-three pounds.
Of dried peaches, thirty-three pounds.
Of dried apples, twenty four pounds.
Of onions, fifty-seven pounds,
Seedling Trees. Many trees which are en
tirely hardy when grown, are very tender du
ring the first and second winters. Cover
them with straw, refuwj garden gatherir.gr,
leaves, cct. Sometimes it is lest to raise
them and lay them in by the heels, by which
those gar-ders dssignate the operation of lay
ing trees in trenches or excavations, and cov
triog the roots aud a considerable portion of
the sums. This will not be extra labor in
all cases when the young trees are to bo re
set, at any rate, the second year in nursery
rows, of from three to four feetapart, and

An aperient and stomachic preparation cf
IRON purified of Oxygen and Carbon by com
bustion in Hydrogen. Sanctified by the highest
Medical Authorities, both in Europe and the
United States, and prescribed in their practice
The c xperience of thousands daily proves that
no preparation of Iron can be compared with it.
Impurities of the blood, depression of vital en
ergy, pale and otherwise sickly complexious in
dicate its necessity in almost every conceivable
case.
Innoxious iu all malladies in which it has
been tried, it has proved alsolut?ly curative in
each of the following complaints, viz:
In Debility. Nervous Affections, Emaciation,
Dtejtepgia. ConslijMition, Diarrhcca, Dysentery,
Incipient Consumption, Scrrfulnus Tuberculosis,
Salt Rheum, Misntenxlruation. Whiles, ChloroU,
Liver Complaints. Chronic Headaches, Rheuma
tism, Intermittent Fevers, Pimjles on the Fac
In cases of General Debility, whether the re
sult of acute disease, or of the continued dimi
nution of nervous and muscular energy from
Chronic complaints one trial of this restorative
has proved successful to an extent which no
description nor written attestation would render
credible. Invalids so long bed-ridden as to Lave
become forgotton in their own neighboi hoods,
have suddenly re-appeared in the busy world as
if just returned from a protracted travel in a
distant land. Some very signal instances of this
kind are attested of female Sufferers, emaciated
victims of apparent marasmus, sanguineous ex
haustion, critical changes, and that complication
of net ous and dyspeptic aversion to air and
exercise fr which the physician has no name.
Ia Nervous Affections of all kinds, and for
reasons familiar to Medical men, the operation
of this preparation of-Iron must necessarily be
salutary, for, unlike the old oxides, it is vigor
ously tonic, without being exciting and over
heating, and gently, regularly aperient, even iu
the most obstinate cases of costivenes without
ever being a gastric purgative or inflicting a dis
agreeable sensation.
It is tLis latter propert-, among other which
makes it so remarkably cfieetua! an J permanent
a remedy fjr Piles, upon which it also appears
to exert a distinct and specific action, by dis
persing the local tendency which "terras them.
In Dyspepsia innumerable as are its causes,
a single lox of these Chalybeate Fills has often
sufikeJ for the inot habitual cases, includin"
the attendant eonticencss.
In unchecked Diarrhu a. even when advanced
to Dysentary, confirmed emaciating and appa
rently malignant, the effects have beea equally
decisive and astonishing.
In the local pains, loss of flesh and strength,
debi'.iatihg cough, and remittent hectic, which
generally indicates Incipient Consumption, this
remedy has allayed the alarm of friends and
physicians, in several very gratifying and in
teresting instances.
In Scrofulous Tuberculsis, this medicated iron
has had far more than the good effect of the
mot cautiously balanced preparations of idione,
without any of their well known liabilities.
Tlic attention of females cannot le too confi
dently invited to this re.neJy an 1 restorative, in
thecaees peculiarly affecting them.
Iu Rheumatism, loth Chronic and inflamatorv
in the latter, however, more decidedly it has
been iuvariabjy well reported, both as alleviating
pain aud reducing the swellings and stifness of
the joints and muscles.
In Intermittent fevers it must necersarily be
a great remedy and energetic resti rative, and its
progress in the new settlements of the West
will probably be one of high renown and use
ulness. No remedy has ever been discovered in the
whole his tory of medicine, which exerts such
prompt, happy aud fully restorative effects.
Good appetitee, complete digestion, rapid ac
quisition of strength, with an unusual disposi
tion for active and cheerful exercise, immediate
Iyfollow its use.
Put up in neat flat mettal boxes containing
50 pills, price 50 cents per box; for sale by drug
gists aud dealers. Will be sent free to any ad

ect., should be addressed to
