One vesr since last Ranting gcason, I plant
d potitoes eb-ut two feet and a La.i apart in
bills; tbey came up, did not appear Courish
ing, the 10th of June came a frost and killed
them down. Immediately planted com on
the same ground between the bills of pota
toes; tbe season waa favorable, and I bad a
for crop of both kinds, especially potatoes
they were of superior quality, and tbe quan
tity a fair crop. The corn esse to maturity,
end out of it found seed for this year. Hav
ing unexpectedly raised two crops on tbe
Bame ground and at tbe same tin concluded
to make the experiment to test tbe thing ful
ly. For that purpose planted my garden
containing three-sixteenths of an acre, bad it
plowed just before planting, without manur
ing at all. It being clayey ground, it came
up in lumps, without harrowing, proceeded to
plant potatoes about three feet apart one way,
the other two end a half feet. Then I plant
d tbe Yellow York State eight rowed corn
between the rows, the widest way in the cen
tre of four bills of potatoes, which brought
them in rov.s both way by itself.

tbe hoe. If you should cultivate a large
piece, you might plant potatoes four feet one
way, and three feet tbe other way, then plant
tbe com between tbe wide rows of potatoes
which wouIJ leavo the rows two feet by three
you miiibt then use a small plow o-je way.
It will be important ia raising this extra
crop, to keep tba ground clear 'from weeds
end not eu2"er aay vines, pumpkins or squash
but to have the ground entirely devcted to
the crop planted. I planted en this sirall
piece wf grouad, about two bushels of pota
toes, tfter cutting fc-d. rcsj,vkg tbe c:aile
part.
Now for a fw remarks relative to the crcp
this var. I have been ia Obcilin more than 1

weeks, carried them out, and carried them to
let them rot. This year there appssrs no rot
but generally they are fair and smooth. This
crop was most productive that I have ever
raised in Oberliu except the one above nam
ed, and greatly superior to that My con
clusion from my short experience in this dou
ble crop is, that the crop of potatoes is in
creased by ths crop of corn. I think that tbe
hade made by the corn in hot weather, or a
drouth is favorablo to the potatoes, snd from
this circumstance the crop is much increased.
The eorn. oa ground well prepared, would be
a fair crop; it may be diminished a trill bow
ever. I think we may safely say that two
good crops can be raised on the same ground
at the same time, for the experiment his ex

corn was ashed ia the bill, to forward its

growth, to prevent the potatoes frrin getting
tbe start of the corn, which was a benefit to
to the corn, aud no disadvantage tj the pota
toes. My impression, with the kiud of corn
mentioned, cannot have too much bhaie,
planted as described in this statement.

IMcli Soil and Good StocU,
We clip the following from a communica
tion in the Homestead, as worth a few min
utes thought from the reading farmer:
'In distributing manure, it is economi
cal to give a liberal dressing as far as we go.
We must go through the labor of cultivation
and it costs no more to plant or hoc a field
of corn or potatoes that will yield heavily,
than oue which will give poor returns; the on
ly additional expense 13 the extra cost of har
Testiug." The same is true to the culture of
any crop.
"We rre recommending to bay mors stock
for our farms as fast in we can find
means for sustaining it; but what class of stock
it is best to bay is less often discussed. Tr.
this too, it may be Fafely asserted that t?e
proper course is to buy goal stock. It .c sts
00 more to raise aad keep gook cattle than
poor; and men who buy for the market always
make a very great dictinctiou between good
and poor animals."
Tbe same rule applies ia dairying and
wool-growing good cows and ahee are prof
itable poor milkers and ligLt-ected fcheep
eat up their products many times over, and
axe ever in debt to the farmer.
Cul-baje fur fodder. There ia no vegeta
ble that can be planted cftcr the rst of July
that will give so great a yield of fodder as
abbag; and no oue vho ia likely to be sl:ort
of pasturage, cr winter feed should neglect
taia highly important adjunct to bis other
cropa. Tbe notion that cabbages should on
ly bo grown by the dozen for cooking in tbe
kitchen, is an old, and wa may aid, a foolish
one. Grow them by the thousand, and after
pasture faili feed them where they are grow
lug to every domestic animal on the farm.
When tbe ground freezes, pull up jour ceb
bg crop aaJ atore it in ths cellar.
