saults of the scribblers of the Mountaineer in
the spring of 1858, and for eo doing he at
least pretended to be not ungrateful. We
never abandoned him until he abandoned us
and our friends, and made common cause with
the men who for years had been his political
enemies. It may possibly be gratifying to
him to now hear his maligners in days gone
by, lauding his course at Charleston and Bal
timore. Bat the illusion is as feeble and un
substantiated as air, for if he consults his own
heart, he cannot but know as well as we do,
"That the few who loved him once have fled.
And they who flatter scorn him."

Journal of last week. It is true that Ihe
Rump Convention which assembled in this
place on the 9th of July, laid on the table a
resolution instructing it3 nominee for Assem
bly, if elected, to oppose the repeal of the
three mill tax on the tonnage of the Pennsyl
vania Rail Road Company. But the true
Democracy of this County do not acknowledge
that they are responsible for any portion of
the proceedings of that Convention, and do
not intend supporting the ticket it placed in
nomination. Nearly one half of the delegates
had seceded before the resolution was offered.
A large majority of the Democracy of this
County are opposed to the repeal of the tax.
