Have "you ever, asks a correspondent of the New loik Commercial, seen this mighty cataract and, its surroundings when the Frost King held sway over them? If not you have never yet seen Niagara in its greatest beauty and marvcloasncss. From above the great fall, down both sides of the river to below the ferry, every tree and shrub is cncaccd in frozen spray not ice, like frozen water tim ply, but a pare, solid, whito mas?, granular, like fine marble. the perpendicular cliUs col umned with mighty icicles, which appear like vast supports to tbeseTeternal walls cf stone. Flashing in the sunlight, the wholar scene a yon approach the river's, bank Jwtles sight and brings to raind all the glories of the' fairy scenes whereof we read ia that ch ild's book of enchantment, the "Arabian Nights. Luna Island Little Luna from across the stream, looks, with her stunted cedars weigh ed down and covered with this frost work, lik? a heard of white elephants; but when you go over to it, and wtlk ia v.nder, as you can, you aro really in a grotto of diamonds the bright eun shining down and giving an ep pearance of splendor not elsewhere to be found. The eddies have clogged and cemen ted the cakes of ice that came down over the falls, and a bridge is formed for foot passen gers, and seemingly strong enough to bear a horse. Of this, as there is nothing to pay for crossing and looking, (& wonder of the Niagara's wonder) numbers hourly take ad vantage. Standing cn mid river and lookiug upward, the scene is impohiugly grand and beautiful. With a pole I measured through the different fissures to ascertain the thickness of the see, and found it was nearly fifteen feet. Getting as near raid river as I could. I "spread myself," and stood oa the water with one foot on Q'icen Victoria's dominions, the other on our own. The scene by moonlight and starlight is equally beautiful, standing on the ice, the flashing of the water and the brightness reflected from the ice enabled me to read easily the ordinary print of a news paper. Believe me, Niagara in winter will repay a journey from the extremes point of our country, and it is surprising that so few take advantage of the facilities for reaching it, and witnessing the glorious burst of raJi ance which nature at this season there spreads out. Better in Theory tlian in 1'racticc. Not many years ago two young Frenchman oue wealthy and in possession of ready cash, the other poor and penniless occupied by chance the eamc room in a suburban -hotel. In the morning the seedy one rose first, took from his pocket a pistol and holding i; to his own for'diad, and backing against the door, exclaimed to his horrified companion: "It is my last desperate resort; I am pen niless and iired cf life; give me five hundred francs, o: I will instantly blow out my brains, and you will bo arrested as a murderer!'" The other passenger found himself the hero of an unpleasant dilemma, but the cogency of his companion's argument struck him "colJ;" he quietly crept to his pantaloons handed over the amount, and the other vamoosed after locking the door on the outside. Hearing of this, another Frenchman of very 6avage as pect, one night contrived to room with a tall Lrawboned gentlcmon from Arkansas, who had been rathrr free of his money during the day, and evidently had plenty more behind. Next morning "Pike," awaking, discovered Lis room mate standing over him with a'pistol levelled at his own forehead, and evidently quaking with agitation. "What ia are you stacdin' thar for in the cold'" asked Pike, propping himself on his elbow, and cooly surveying the Gaul. "1 aia desperatt!" was the reply; "you gives to me one hundred dol lar or I blow out mine nrains!" "Well, then Llow acd be dammed"' replied Pike, turning over. "A inaa 12 ay as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb," he cool ly shouted; and at the wcrd he started for the Gaul, but the latter was too nimble the "Loss pistol," innocent of lead, exploded in the air, and with one frantic leap our little Frenchman was standing in his night robe at the foot of the staircase.
