Hi t Front the Rural New Yorker. To Renovate An Old Orcbard. la p'.nia view of wherg I am now writing, oli orchard of SJta-3 sixty tree which was plaata 1 :n-ir3 thin forty years ago. The trees wore allowed t follow the dictates of nature The groaui hal boea plowed & crop-r-jd a few ti nes bus rao3t of tho time it has lain iu pasture, and no manure of any Kind Las ever baea applied. Some twenty five years ai, more than half the trees were "rafted, mostly with winter fruit, but, the brandies of the old stock were suffered to re main, to the great damage of the grafted f; TVirA tfill remained '2i trees which had never been grafted, and haviDg fallen into other hand, the proprietor, in the spring of 1S55, employed two young men to graft them with winter rubers which they accom plished in a little more than one day. In four year's time., Oct. 1859 the owner gath ered eighteen barrels of as handsome winter russets as I ever saw, besides what windfalls were devoured by cattle, ,hog3 and hor3es. The good fruit he sold for 1.22 p2r barrel, (the barrelk were furnished.) amounting to 022,50, which was sufficient to pay for the labor of grafting several times over, and I see not why these tweDty-four trees, if well cared for, may not produce the same goad fruit for forty years to come. Axemen spare that old orchard! Don't cut down a tree, unless it is dead or dying. Make new tops by grafting every prominent branch of an inch or more in thickness, with gaoo good winter fruit. Prune away the natural branches; not all at once, but by de grees. Dig about them and dung them, and you will be astonished at the result. S. Pier Bon. Soaring Seeds Before Sowing This practice, says the Country Gentleman it not so extensively adopted ia this country ss it might be, with advantage both for the farm and garden. In this respect, we are far behind a people whom we are apt to regard with feelings nearly approaching to contempt. There are few probably, either iu England or this country, who are disposed to think them selves much superior to tho Chinese and yet ia one respect at least, we think they are much in advance of most farmers ia either England, or America Liebig, states in his "Letters on Modern Agriculture," that no Chiac-se farmer sows a seed before it has been soaked in liquid manure, diluted with water and has been to germinate; and the experi ence has taught him that this operation tends not only to promote rapid and vigerous growth and developement of the plant but also to protect the seed from the ravages of worms mnd insects. There would not only be some trouble, but some inconveniences also in the adoption of this practice on an extensive Male; but we are pretty confident notwithstanding, that those who commence it on a small scale,, will fiad it productive of advantage enough to induce them to extend their operations. we may suggest that on more than one occa sion, been informed by one of our correspon dents, that he makes much use of hen manure ia water, as a soak for his seeds. How to Raise Grape Tines. Rev. D. J. Weller, in the month of last March, presented the Editor of this Journal, with a bundle of some twenty-five cuttings'of the "Bloom Grape." We made a trench in our garden, about ten feet long a foot wide near six inches deep, into which we planted the cuttings, two-abrcast, 6ome six inches apart, leaving one eye or sprout above ground Now, we have the satisfaction of owuing about twenty beautiful growing Grape Vines, (out of the twenty-five scions,) ia good order for transplanting, and only Estate the fact, that others wishing a supply of these valuable fruits, may emulate our example with similar success. Columbia ('a.) Democrat. Protecting loung Trees tvltli Blood With regard to the protection of young trees against the attacks of rabbits, mice, and other animals obnoxious to the vitality ofveg etation, a Missiourian correspondent (Dr. J. Dinkley,) says: 4I will give you a much bet ter remedy than any previously proposed. Rub the trees from the ground upward to about IS inches, with a piece of raw or blocdy meat liver is the most convenient thing; or blood may be put on with a brush. If this bs done late in the full or begioiog of winter no animal will touch the bark during that sea eon. I have tried this plan for thirty years, and have never known it to fail. Let horti culturists try it Scientific American. Transparent Ivory. The process of making ivory transparent and flexible is limply an immersion in liquid phosphoric acid, and the change it undergoes is owing to a partial neutriiization of the bas ic phosphate of lime of which it principally consists. The ivory is cut in pieces not thicker than the twentieth part of an inch aud placed in phosphoric acid of a specific gravity of 1-131, until it has become transparent, Khea it is taken from the bath, washed in wa ter and 'dried with a clean linen cloth. It becomes dry in the air without the applica tion of heat, and softness again under warm water. Dm joists Circular. Coikiet. Carrolton, July 15, 1337. itST JOB WORK nf f? kindt dr.e at this off?-. itii KQKBllTOirflUS- Above we present you with a likeiie of DR. MORSE the inventor of MORSE'S INDIAN. ROOT PILLS. This philanthropist La3 spent the greater part of bis life in traveling, having visited Europe, Asia, and Africa, as well as North America has spent three years among the Indians of our Western country it was in thi3 wav that the Indian Root Pills were first discovered. Dr. Morse was the first man to es tablish the fact that all diseases arise from IM PURITY OF THE BLOOD that our fdreegth. health aud life depended upon this vital hind. When the various passages become clogged, and do not .act in perfect harmony with the dit- fercnt functions of the body, the blood loses its action, becomes thick, corrupted, and diseased ; thus causing all pains, sickness and distress of every name : our strength is exhausted, our health we are deprived ofr and if nature is not as&isted in throwing off the stagnant humors, the blood will become choked aud cease to act, and thus our licrht of life will forever be blown out. How impoitaut thn that we should keep the various passages ot the rxlv tree ana "open. Ana how pleasant to us that we have it in pur power to put a medicine in your reacu, namely, iiorse s Iudian Root Fills, manufactured from plants and .... !-- routs which "row around the mountainous cliffs in Nature's Garden, for the health and recovery ' of diseased man. One of the rojts from which tLee Pills are made is a budorihe, which opt-ns the pores of the skin, and assists Nature in throwing out the finer parts of the corruption within. Tho second is a plant which is an Ex nect jrant, that opens and unclog.s the passage to the lu!igs, and thus, in a soothing manner, per forms its duty in throwing off phlegm, and other humors from the lungs by copious spitting. The third is a Diuretic, which givc3 double ease and strength to the kidneys ; thus encouraged, they draw large amounts of impurity from the Mood, which is thcu thrown out bountifully by the uri nary or water passage, and which could not have been discharged in any other way. The fourth is a Cathartic, and accompanies the other prop erties of the Pills while engaged in purifying the Mood; the coarser particles cf impurity which cannot pass by the other outlets, are thus taken up and conveyed off ia great quantities by the bowels. From the above, it is shown that Dr. Morse's Indian Root Pills not oily enter the stomar-h. mt become united whri the blood, fOr'they find way to every part, and completely rout out and clejne the system from all impurity, and the life of the lody, which is thebld, become ier fectly healthy ; consequently all sickr.es and pain is driven from the system, fur they canuot remain when the body becomes so pure and clear. The reason vhypeople are so distressed whn sick, and why s many die, is because they do not get a medicine which will pass to the afiiic ted parts, and which will open the natural pas sage for tlie dise.L-e tube cast out; hence, a large quantity of food and other matter is lodg ed, and the stomach and intestines are literally overflowing with the corrupted mass ; thus un dergoing a disagreeable fermentation, constantly mixing with the blood, which throws the cor rupted matter through every vein and artery, until life :s taken from the bjdy by disease. Dr. Morse's PILLS have added to themselves vio.tor upon victory, hv restoring milltous of the sick to blooming health aud happiness. -Yes thousands who hivtbecn rackea cr flormenux: J wuti sick nejs, pain arid anguish, and whose fble frames have been scorched by the burning elements of raging fever, and who have been brought, as it were, within a step of the sileur j;rave, now stand ready to testify that thty would Lave been numbered with the dead, had it not been for this great and wonderful medicine, Morse's In dian Root Pills. After one or two doses had been taken, they were astonished, and absolutely surprised, in witnessing their charming effects. Not only do they give immediate case and strength, and take away all sickness, pain and anguish,' but they at once go to work at the foundation f the disease, which is the Mood. Therefore, it will be shown, especially by those who use these Pd!s. that they will cleanse and purify, that disease that deadly enemy wi'.l take its flight, and the flush of youth and beauty will again return, and the prospect of a long and happy life will cherish aud brighten your days.
