    EARTH OH AXCI-E-WORMS.
The common earth or angle-worm infest
old gardens and rich soils geuerally, much to
the detiimcnt of the appearance of the former
v.liere m-at w a.ks and alleys aro always desi
rable. Tby usually come to the surface in
rains anJ after heavy dews, (hence taking the
cauie of dew worm.) bringing with them a
portion of the soil, and leaving thnr casts j
and trails wherever they move
These facts 1
are general noticed, but few have studied '.
their uses or sought to know the part they I
perform in the econemy of nature. Instead :
of being, as is generally supposed detrimeu- :
tal to the farmer, tby are laborers with him
in the improvement of the soil. A scientific
writer on Zxdogy says:
"The burrowing of earth-worms is a pro
se exceedingly useful to the gardner and
agriculturists; and these animals are far more
usaful to mm in this way, than they are in
jurious by destroying vegetables. They give
a kind of under tillage to the land, perfor
n;iD" the same Wow the ground that the
spade does - above for the garden and the
for araLle.land loosening the earth so as to ren
der it permeable to air and water. It bas
lately been shown that they will even add to
the depth of soil; covering barren tracts with
a layer of productive mould. Thus in fields
that have been overspread with lime burnt
marl, or cinders, these substances are in time
covered with finely-divided soil, well adapted
to the support of vegetation
'That this result which is not commonly
attributed by farmers to the 'working down'
of the material in question is really due to
the action of the earth-worm, it appears from
the fact that ic the soil thus formed, large
number of 'worm casts' may be distinguished.
These are produced by the digestive process
of the worms, which take into their intestinal
cattal, a large quantity of the soil through
which they barrow, extract from it a great
part of the decaying vegetable matter it may
contain, and eject the rest in a finely divided
fctate. In this manner a fi-1 J manured with
marl has become covered; in the course of j
eishtv year?, with a bed of earth averaging !
tbirteen inches in thickncs3."
Another autbor f peaks of the angle-worm
lumbricut terrestrit) as the natural manure
of tho wil, and the redy indicator of its im
proved sta. It consumes on the surface of
the ground, where they would soon be injuri
ous, the softer parts of decayed vegetable
matters, and conveys into tho soil the more
woody fibre, where they moulder and be
come reduced to a simple nutriment, fitting
for living vegetation. The parts consumed
by them are soon returned to the surface,
whence dissolved b frosts and scattered by
rains, they circulate again in the plants of
of the soil a ceaseless rotation, "death still
producing life."
Thee worms are tender creatures and wa
ter remaining a few days over their haunts
drowns them; they easily become frozen, un
less they enter deeper into the ground to cs
cap the cold No sooner is the frost out of
the ground, than they come to' the surface
and go to work again. We have observed
that a certain degree of moisture seems ne
cessary to their activity; they go down to the
depth of eighteen inches or two feet in cx
trcaio dry weather. We have found them
knotted iu a compact ball in a dry bard sub
soil, so hard as to require a pick to penetrate
it. Various other characteristics in their nat
ural history might be mentioned, tut they do
net refer particularly to their agricultural
uses, we leave them to the researches of the
curious reader. Country Gentleman
Winter Operations In the Esculent
Garden.
The crops, except, perhaps, the Parsnip,
Horse Radish, Asparagus and a few others
which are hardy or perennial; have been re
moved. What can be done in the garden or
rather what should be done to give it a more
orderly appearance, and at the some time
improve the condition of the soil, all refuse
should be gathered and removed to the ma
nure pile, and the vacait squrres thrown up
into ridges Where the plow can be intro
duced the work may be more cxpe litiously
perfjrmed; the ridges, however, are" best
thrown up by the spade. .
Very etifF clay is improved by coveriog in
a quantity of long manure, this by decompo
sition renders tfe soil triable, and when the
ridges are leveled down io the spilng, the ini
provement is obvious. At this season, strict
attention should be given to the preparation &
accumulation of manure, without which we
can never raise good esculents, and not at
tended to in season, wc shall always be in
want of it. Those who Lave means and on-
portunUka to attend to hot-bed frames, gen-
erally employ a gardner, who will of course
.. , - j . , . , .
attend, m dee season to his duties
We would recommend ail who have bad a
portion of their farm set a part for a vegeta
ble garden, and who have Dot cultivated it
tccordiog to a regular rotation, to rearrange
it, lay it cut in four or six regular compart
ments, with convenient walis and. borders
and the result will be much more satisfac
tory. a-ws. In the House of Correction is an old
