Summer Pruning of Apple Trees.
It is a pretty well established fact that ap
ple trees and we woulJ ad J pear trees
pruned from tbe middle of July to the mid
dle of August sustaiu the operation with
much more advantage than if pruned at any
other period of the year. If pruned at this
ti:ne, the wound will heal over, and make,
Vrhat surgeons would say of a properly am
putated arm or log, a handsome stump. If
the brauches be lopped in winter or spring,
the stump generally leaves a perpetual scar ;
and if after the sap has commenced flowing,
a bare bone, as it were, projecting from the
living parts of the tree, and remaining there
until it rots away, when frequently the de
cay continues on, as a sort of gangrene, into
the very heart of the tree, much to its inju
ry. Who has not observed this in his ex
perience ?
We have more than onco witnessed the
beuefits of pruning in midsummer, and have
always been impressed with the advautaires
over the system generally pursued. On oae
ci two occasions, some years ago, we adver
tised to the fact, ani now again call attention
to it, especially as the season for trying it is
at hand.
Five or six years ago, a first-class farmer
upon a leased place, trimmed the apple trees
in midsummer, at which tnc landlord who
hal greater pretensions to farming than his
tenant, was very indignant, and threatened a
tuit for damages ; but in one year after,
wheu we saw the ptumps, a more perftct
ueces3 was never accomplished. Gcrman
toicn Telegraph.
Summer I'ninliig- flie Grape Vine.
When vines are properly pruned in the
Fall or winter they will need only moderate
pruning ia the Summer. The first item in
this work is rubbing off all superfluous shoots
before they have attained to much size.
Where several push cut at a auilo joint, all
but one or ct rust tvo, should be rubbed ofF.
Again, after the fruit has set, if there are
more than two branches ou a siugle fpur,
they should bu pinched out. Ojo good,
heavy bunch is often enough for a spur, and
certainly two are all it ever should be allow
ed to carry. Another item U pinching off
the cu ls of the bearing shoots as soon as the
berries are half grown. Pinch off at two or
three buls beyond the iast cluster; never
nearer than this In a week, or ten days
afterwards, the ends of these shoots will have
pushed several inches more ; pinch off this
growth; leaving on leaf at the base of it,
so 3 not to cause buls to break out prema
turely lower down ou the spur. Continue
this operation every week until the fruit is
full grown and bogia to color well ; then let
them go.
Su'inuer prui.i'jg dues n t consist in pulling
off the fat its of the viae. Many persons still
continuo this barbarous practice. Uut they
should consider that the leaves are the lungs
and stomach of the vine, and are as essential
to its vigor and health as the same organs
well cared for, are to man The leaves are
particularly necessarv in the latter part of
Su mner, not odIj to finish the growth of the
berries, but also to elaborate the juices on
which the fiae flavor of good grapes much
depends. Give the loaves all possible sun
light, but do not tear them off in order to
expose the fruit.
Currant Wine.
A palatable aud wholesome wine or at
lea-Jt usefu-.l 'as a medicine,' in many cascs
may be male from the currant We have
says the Albany Cultivator, in former years,
ma lc wine from the red currant by the fol
lowing recipe, which was of so Gae a quality
as to be ordered by the physicians for their
patients, in preference to the important kinds.
Its cot was not over fifty cts, per gallon.
To each gallon of cl?ar juice was added
t wo gallons of v.a'cr, and to each gallon of
the mixture was added three ani a half
ponds of brown Eugar. After th j euar was
diss 'ilvcd, the liquor was put iu good barrels
p.ac
had
m tt.o c
l!ar, and whnn fermentation
subsided, it was bunged tightly. Iu
February, one gallon of the best fourth-proof
brandy was added to the barrell In May
following, it was Lo'tle-I. Like other wine
it improves with age
White wine may Lc made with white cur
rants, using the ep.mo proportion of white su
gar as is named of brown, for the above, the
liqu7rti be treated iu the same way, rxcept
that no brandy is added.
ilacK Currant YVJne.
This wiue ha3 always been regarded as
highly usefull in "summer complaint," a
most distressing and too frequently fatal dis
ease. Soma of h shouli always be kept on
hand.
lleccipt:To every three quarts of juico put
the same quantity of water, unboiled ; and to
every three quarts of the liquor, add three
pound of very pure. moist suar.
Put it into a cask, reserving a little for
filling up Vut the cask in a warm, dry,
room, and the liquor will ferment of itself.
Skim off the refuse, when the fermentation
shall be over, and lill up with the reserved li
quor. When it has ceased working,- pour
three quarts of brandy, to forty quarts of
wine Hung it close for nine months, then
bottle it, and drain the thick part through a
jelly bag, until it be clear, and bottle thnt
Keep it ten or twelve mouths.

Scrofula, or King's Evil,
is a constitutional disease, a corruption of the
blood, by -which this fluid Veeomcs vitiated,
weak, and poor. Being in the circulation, it
pervades the whole body, aud may burst out
in disease on any part of it. No organ is free
from its attacks, nor is there one which it may
not destroy. The scrofulous taint is variously
caused by mercurial disease, low livir.g, dis
ordered or unhealthy food, impure air, tilth
and filthy habits, the depressing vices, and,
above all, by the venereal infection. "What
ever be its origin, it is hereditary in the con
stitu yin, descending from parents to cliildren
unt ,the third and fourth generation ;" indeed,
it f tms to be the rod of Him who fays, " I
will' visit the iniquities of the fathers upon
their children."
Its effects commence by deposition from the
blood of corrupt or ulcerous matter, which, in
the lungs, liver, and internal organs, is termed
tubercles ; in the glands, swellinjrs ; and on
the surface, eruptions or tores. This foul cor
ruption, which panders in the blood, depresses
the energies of life, so that scrofulous constitu
tions not only suffer from scrofulous com
plaints, but they have far less power to with
stand the attacks of other diseases; conse
quently, vast numbers perish by eliiirders
which, although not scrofulous in their nature,
are still rendered fatal by this taint in the
system. Most of the consumption -which de
cimates the human family has its origin directly
in this scrofulous contamination ; and many
destructive diseases of the liver, kidneys, brain,
and, indeed, of all the orgaas, arise from or
are aggravated by the same cause.
One quarter of all our people are scrofulous ;
their persons are invaded by this lurking in
fection, and their health is undermined by it.
To cleanse it from the system we must renovate
the blood by an alterative medicine, and in
yisorate it by healthy food and exercise.
Such a medicine we supply in
AYER'S
Compound Extract of Sarsaparilla,
the most effectual remedy which the medical
skill of our times can devise for this everv
where prevailing and fatal malady. It is com
bined from the most active reraedials that have
been discovered for the expurgation of tliis foul
disorder from the blood, and the rscue of the
eysteit from its destructive consequences.
Hence it should be employed for the cure of
not only scrofula, but also those other affec
tions which arise from it, such as Eruptive
and Skiv Diseases, St. Axthoxt's Fmm,
llOSE, or ERTSirELAB, l'lMTLES, PrSTVXES,
Blotches, Blains and Boii.s, Tcmors, Tettkm.
and Salt Rhecm, Scald Head, Ringworm,
Rheumatism, Syphilitic and Mercurial Dis
eases, Dropst, DTsrErsiA, Debility, and,
indeed, all. Complaints arising from Vitia
ted or Impure Blood. The popular belief
in " impurity of the blood" is founded in truth,
for scrofula is a defeneration of the blood. The
particular purpose and virtue of this Sarsapa
rilla is to purify and regenerate this vital fluid,
without which sound health is impostible in
contaminated constitutions.
Ayef s Cathartic Pills;
FOR ALL THE FURFCSES CF A FAMILY PHYSIC,
are so composed that disease wiihin the rane e!
their action can rarely withstand or evade them
Their penetrating properties search, arid cleanse,
and invigorate every portion e.f the human organ
ism, correcting its diseased action, end rcsterir.p
its healthy vitalities. As a consequence of these
properties, the invalid who is bowed down -with
pain or physical debility is nstonished to rind Ids
health or energy restored by a remedy at ence so
simple and invmnp.
Not only do they cure the every-d.iy complaints
of every body, but also many formidable ar.d
dangerous diseases. The opciit below named is
pleased to fumi'sh gratis my American Alcnmac,
containing certificates of their cures and directions
for their use in the following complaints: Cijstive
ncss. Heartburn, Headache arhinpjrorn disordered
Stomach, Nausea, Indigestion. I'am in and Hcrbid

POR THE RAriU CURE OF
Ceajhs, Colds, Influenza, Hoarseness,
Croup, Bronchitis, Incipient Consump
tion, and for the relief of Consumptive
Patients in advanced stages of the
disease
So wide is the field of its usefulness and so nu
merous arc the cases of its cures, that almost
every section of country abounds in persors pub
licly known, who have been restored from alarming
and even desperate ci-cr.scs of the lungs by its
use. When once tried, its superiority over every
other medicine of its kind is too apparent to escape
observation, and where its virtues are kno-.n, the
public no lonper hesitate what antidote to employ
for the distressing nnd dunperons atlectiona of the
pulmonary organs that are incident to our climate.
While many inferior remeilies thrust upt.-n the
community have failed and been discarded, this
has pained friends by every trial, conferred benefits
on the afflicted they can never forget, and pro
duced cures too numerous and too remarkable to
be forgotten.
