Nature's Plan of Manuring.
Much has been said of late, and not with
out reason, of following nature's plan of ma
nuring, by placing manure on the surface or
lightly' ploughing them under the surface,
instead of the more general practice of trench
ing, or plowing organic manures deep in the
toil. It is very true that undeeomposed or
freshly composed stall manure, if plowed in
deeply, may not decompose fast enough to
feed the growing crop, its true pabaluni, at
the right time; but oa heavy clay loam I
have never found such manure to fail to bring
heavy corn and large wurzel beets particularly
if the season was warm acd there was a try
ing summer drought, aa at that time such
manure decomposes fast and keeps up the
moisture of the soil. In the summer of 18M
we had tic most trying drought, perhaps,
ever known in this country ; the crop of In
dian corn, which delights in hot weather,
while maturing its cereal yield, now rolled
its leaves and refused to fill its ears, yet my
patch of corn that season was one of the
test ever grown ; the leaves rolled a little by
dav, but they were always fully expanded in
the morning. There can ba no doubt that
this success, was, next to frequent hoeings,
due to the long green manure that had been
trenched deeply into the soil the fall and
winter before,
I take it that a heavy, tenacious soil, no
matter how well it is underdrained, if it is
only top dressed with rotten manure and
lightly ploughed, cannot receive the mechan
ical amelioration below the ploughing so
necessary to make the subsoil friable and
absorptive ; hence with such surface treatment
a yearly application of manure is indespen
6ible. But if fresh stall manure (the longer
the better) is ploughed deeply into such a
6ou, in the process ol its decay it amends the
poil below the surface chemically as well as
mechanically, and the subsoil, befora dry
and hard, now becomes absorptive and a
darker colored, with its bygremetrieal power
much increased. But as farmers make
much stall manure iu the spring months that
must be kept over for fall ploughing, or to
top drefS meadows in the fall, such manure
must necessarily bo decomposed during the
rummer, which, if slowly done, without either
washing or overheating, will be a most valu
able amendment to top dress the wheat fal- ;
low, if only harrowed, not ploughed in.
IJence 1 take it that both top dressing and
deeply ploughing in manures should be prac
tical according to circumstances and require
ments, not only of the soil, but the crops ;
and even where a soil is deeply amended,
a little top dressing, if it is ouly in the drill
or the hill, will at least be a qaickner of the
crop, which, in slow seasons, is a great help.
At any rate there is not as much waste of
ammonia in top dressiug with even semi-rot
ti;n manure a there must Le in Peruvian gu
ano, because with the latter there is no nas
cent carbonic acid to save, or woody fibre to
belter and turn its ammonia from the air to
the soil.
One great argument in favor of top dres
sing is tho absorbing power it produces
Schubler'a very interesting experiments show
'that one hundred pounds of dry humus will
absorb from an atmosphere saturated with
moisture twelve poaad of water in seventy
two hours, a still clay only four pound, a
calcareous sand only one-quarter of a pound,
and a eilecious sand, destitute of vegetable
matter, none at all." No wonder, then, that
a blowing sand ceases to produce, when it
has not hygrometrical power enough to ab
sorb nnd retain from the atmosphere a single
particle of plant-food; and Lence it is that
everv amendment to a barren soil adds to
Its capacity to feed itself from the kindly
tilant food ever present ia dew and rain.

TIic Slacli Ikuot oa tlic Plum.
"We find on our files the following-remarks
from a correspondent in Onieda Co., N Y :
Horticulturists are evidently becoming dis
couraged in their efforts to cultivate the plum.
The curculio and the black-knot are two
formidable enemies. Of the curculio I do
not now propose to epeak ; but the black-knot
I believe can be kept iu check, if not exter
minated. Careful ebr6rration has ascertain
ed pretty cTearly what the cause of the knot
is It is undoubtedly the sting of an insect.
This ius3ct is about an inch long, pale yel
low in collor, has four wings, and liiud legs
resembling those of a grasshopper. The
puncturuing of the branch is done by the
female, who slings it in order to deposit her
eggs. These eggs, numbering often as mauy
as ten or a dozen, are laid in August and
September. They are soon hatched, aul the
larvae lie dormant until the e?.rly part of the
following Summer, when they are changed
iuto winged insects.
The tumor on the tree appears to be caused
partly by the puncturing itself, and partly
by a poisonous substance iufusod at the time
the wound is made. JJy irequentlv exainin
log plum trees in the months of August aud
bepteniber, the insects will be found busy at
work, stinging tho branches and making
their deposits ; which being done, the bole is
varnished over with a water proof substaee,
and domestic matters are kept quiet until the
larvrc are Latcted Cut opeu a limb that
lias been stung, early in June, and the laivie
wi'l be found aave and kickiug.
Of course, the culy way to subdue this
etst is to wage an unceasing war upon it.
Entrap him in bottles of sweetced water
tuog in the trees ; burn him in bonCres kin
dled ia the garden by night ; examine the
treeB oftn, and cut out the tumors as soon as
they appear, and burn them. This cutting
off the limbs does no serious harm : tLcy soon
heal over. I'y pursueing this vigorous treat
ment, the blaek-knot will do little practical
