Potatoes npived,Vai,ittM.
Wm..S.C?penter ofHarrison, Westches
ter -County, carefully experimenting culti
vator, seoda -s tbe following observations
npen several Of the new or improved varieties
of potatoes which he has grown. We thin
Vrat 'he says will-prove a valuable guide to
others in selecting seed. 'Hcsays
A description of twenty varieties from
niy sallection may not be unacceptable to
some of jour readers.
"Prince Albert A seedling imported
from - England. They are an oblong shape,
entirely white, with few eyes, which lie upon
iihe surface, being one of the most beautiful
potatoes ver grown.. Of this variety, I
planted one acre on -sward ground yield

ed this ticuv too far apart, aa it is not a rank
growing kind, This X Ehould select as one
of the three beet m my collection. This ap
pears -to be the only good table. potato that
is eatirely-tslear rroni the rflt.'itiwis'unproved
Tcry -much with me, and now cooks as dry
-no mealy as a Mercer, and very fine flavor
ed. Ie is one of -the-bc8tipotatuM baked 1
ever-srw.
State Jfnijtc tPbisis aAvery fne -variety,
entirely White, oblong sbape, witii rather
deep -set -eyes, cooking Try dry and office
Savor, Tinatorea-quite early, yields a fair crop,
aorot.
Strawberry This potato is very hand
some, and good for the table, but it cannot
be recommended for general cultivation,
being very delicate grower, requiring
anach - care to get . a. .medium' crop, and rots
badly.
IDavis Seecffinj "Originated in .Meesac'au
etts. This is one of the very 'best potatoes
grown, .taking everything it to consideration
-nize, .productiveness, hardiness, &c. It is
-iKghtly oblong, flattened, red skin and white
Ic&ide, cooking perfectly dry and mealy, and
fine flavored. I planted one half acre of this
iind on rorn stubbie, in drills 80 indhes a
jart. 20 inches in drills, the yield was enor
mous, at the rate of 350 bushels to the acre.
It grows to a large -size, and perfectly solid,
It is very free (from dkease. and a most val
ble acquisition, Ttpens with the Mercer.
Wlhe IKiaMtain A seedling from New
Haujpshire, a very large, long, white potato,
-weighing two pounds, each, good flavored,
and solid. This, I think, will improve as it
is quite new and its good qualities not yet
fully developed it is a great yielder, and
tree from rot.
Dykeman This is indespensible as an
early potato, it if one of the first to ripen, it
originated in the western part of the State,
and crows there to a large size, here, if the
eame ced is plauted successively, the potato
diminishes to about one naif its original size.
I have found great benefit in changing the
jced of this variety every year, it is white,
-with a pink eye, slightly oblong, cooks dry
and good, docs not nt, produces a good
enra.
JPtack IRxkc This pctaio Las so far im
proved that it is now considered -one -of the
iet for the table, and is likely to become
cue of the leading market varieties, bat to
the farmer there are some objections te this
potato it requires the whole season to ma
ture It has a very rank growing vine, that
requires more room tnan any other potato,
od yields only a medium crop, compared to
the Prince Albert and Davis Seedling.
Scotch Grey A dull, grey looking potato
from the Ye6t, nearly round, cooks white
and dry, a very good table potato, yields
coed crws, and nearly free from rot
DUxch Carter A new variety, with a jet
black skin, white inside, and booking dry,
does not yield more than half a -crop, and rots
badly.
Buckeye A white potato, with pink eyes.
nearly rouud. This was sent to rac from
Monmouth Couoty. N. J., as a fine variety,
It has not proved so with we, it does not
cook dry and moaly, all of them are hollow
Leaned, ripens with the Mercer, quite free
from rot, aori i a very abundant yielder.
Washington Originated in Massachusetts
This is one of the finest table potatoes that I
Lave ever grown, it has a light red skin, aud
is white meated, cooking very dry, and fine
Savored, it is of the medium size, rouud. with
deep set eyes; when boiled it has a dry flour
like appearance, aud great delicacy of flavor,
Ood yielder, and nearly free from rot.
.Victori-a This is a new variety from Eng
land, a large, slightly, oblong potato, per
fectly white and smooth, cooking dry and
mealy, it has been grown but one season iu
this country, and cannot be properly judged
until a further trial, it seems to possess a
great many qualities for a market potato
large yielder, and free from rot.
We saw an exhibition of Mr. Carpenters
potatoes that he made last Fall at the Crystal
Palace, which we should think would have
tempted any farmer to try to emulate him.
lie ii also originating seedlings, and con
stantly endeavoring - to improve - this indes
pccaible article of food for all classes of the
American people.
lie thinks from the 1st to tbe 20th of May
early enough to plant for a crop in this vicin
ity, and he would only use seed of his own
growing two years in succession. lie inva
riably cuts seed to two or three eyes to each
kill. He has experienced much with ma
nures, and modes of planting, and adopted
the following :
Plant rank growing ones in drills to 3 feet
apart, and 18 to 20 inches between tiece.
JVSrrer use manure. As soon as the rows can
be seen, plow and hoe; and apply ashes and
plaster, . mixed in equal quantity, a handful
to each hill. Keep the ground well tilled
tin tne plants blossom, and afterwards go
over occasionally and pull out all weeds, lie
aye:
"I have followed this plan for several
years, and find no trouble iu growing from
200 to 300 bushels to the 'acre, of large,
sound potatcts, on aa'ordinary dry land '."'
-JWeiiy Melons, dc One of the best
methods we Late found to raise early plants
f the melon and cuccmber under glass, is to
Uke soda from three to five inches thick, soak
them some twelve hours or more iu liquid
Bnure, and then plunge them grass down,
into the bed, then insert three or four seeds
la eaoh od, where they can afterwards be
transplanted with the sod, without disturbing
1b roots.
