No farmer who pretends to have a garden
houldle without a hot-bed It is easily
made, and needs only a little ewe and dai y
attention to manage it successfully. It should
be placod in a dry eituation exposed to the
east and eouib. ud protected by buildings or
fences on the north and north-east. A Lole
should be dug two feet deep and a foot lar
ger each way than the frame. The manure
(horse-dung is best) should be placed in a
loo?e heap to feraient a week or so before be
in r placed under the frame. Then work it
over, carefully mixing it, and place it in the
pit, beating it elowu well with the back of the
fork as you proceed, but do not tread it down
as it will heat more iu one place than anoth
er. If compressed too much, so as to exclude
the air, it will ferment slowly, and give but
little heat. If too loose, it will formeut rap
idly and be too warm at first and will soon
pet cold. The richer the manure t e., the
richer food given the animals the more read
ily will the manure heat. If the manure is
too dry, water it with the drainage of the
tables This, Uood, or any animal sub
etance (except fat) will act as a terment. All
nitrogenous substances in a stale of decay
possesses the power of inducing fermentation
m non-nitrcgecous substances, substances
which of themselves will cot ferment. All
animal matters, and especially those which
are soluble, cau be used to great advantage
iu regulating the heat cf hot-beds. Where
thereis plenty of horse or sheep dung, how
ever, there will be" no need of anything to
induce fermentation.
Heat is favorable to fermentation, and it is
wtll to put the frame on the bed as soon as it
is made. A frame nine feet ljug and bsx
vcith three sashes, is a convenient sire.
Sbut'it down close, but do not exclude the
Jiht, and cover well at nights. In a few
days the bed will be quite lot. The gases
climated at first are rather injuricus to plants
o that the soil should not ba put ou the bed
till all rank smell has ceased. Then cover
the bed three or four inches deep with light
rich, garden soil. Under the centre of each
eash'placa about a bnshel of light, rich mold
making a heap about nice inches deep.
Wheu this is warmed through, sow a few
seeds of cucumbers in each hill, about half
an inch deep. Thin out the plants, leaving
three of the strongest in cach hill. When
the roots protrude through the bill, cover
them with light soil previously warmed in
the bed. Water, when dry, with water the
tempeture of the bed. This should be about
C0 at night and from 75 to 85 during the,
sun. Ventilate, by letting down the sash a
few inches on all favorable occasions. Fresh
ir and light as important as heat: but be
careful that no cold wind blows on the tender
plants.
A few seeds of tomatoes, celery, egg-plant
Ac., may be sown in boxes and placed in the
bed', whore they will get a good start before
they arc in the'way of the cucumbers. They
should be removed to a cold frame and har
dened off before planting in the open ground.
Another bed can be made and managed iu
the same way, for a few early lettuce and
radishes. The soil for these should be six
inches deep. A little mustard and pepper
grass may be sown to use before the lettuce
are ready. In about a week, the mustard
will be three inches high- when it has two
leaves, it is fit for use. For all these seeds
the soil should be very fine. Sow them on
the surface, and then sift the soil over them
covering the lettuce about the eight of an
inch and the radishes a quarter of an inch
deep.
If the bed is two cold, place some "hot
manure round the frame, covering it with
boards.
Little can be done iu the open ground this
month, except spreading manure on vacant
lard ready to be spaded in a3 coon as the
frost is out, and the soil is sufficiently dry
llhubarb can be easily forced by placing
an old barrel, wuh the ends out, over
plant, and then tanking it round with warm
manure about two feet thick. Forced iii thi3
way, it is deliciously tender. The top of the
barrel should be covered at night and on cold

"Mr Johnston has used salt occasionally
ou his whoat for twenty years, and always
found it to promote the growth and earl)
maturity of the crop; he thinks
wheat is four or five days earlier,
the salt at the time of seeding,
he intends to sow 400ibs, per
thinks it would be better to sow in follows in
the early part of the summer; the more inti
matelyit can be mixed with the soil, the bet
ter. "This fact in regard to the beneficial ef
fect cf salt, is an exceedingly interesting one,
both in a practical and scientific point of view.
Salt contains two element which enter into
the eomposition of all our cultivated plants;
but we think its action, in this instance, at
least, is not to be ascribed to its supplying
these element?; they ore seldom deficient in
eoils. If we adopt Professor Way's hypoth
esis in regard to the form in which wheat and
other ceralia take up the silicia required to
tiflcn their straw viz, as a double silicate
of aluninia amonia we hve at once an ex
planation of the fact; for this double silicate
la much more soluble in water containing
nit than pure rain water. In other words,
a dressing ol salt wouiu oe equivalent to a
dressing of ammonia, which is known to have
uch a beneficial effect on wheat, not only
promotiug its growth, but increasing its early
maturity. uenesce farmer.
