    Breeding Horses.
As there arc many enormous opinions en
tertained respecting the breeding of horses,
I trsst T may bo indulged a hearing- if I give
lie public the observations I have on this
tubjtct As a practicle farmer, I do not
hesitate to express my opinion, and give the
prominent reason why wc have go many
horses cf inferior size, strength, beauty and
motion. This is not owing to the want of care
taken of the colts, or to theirliot being well
fed and sheltered during the severity of the
winter. The fact is, that most farmers arc
induced to fake pood care of their animals,
because it is for their interests to do so The
great reason is, the mares selected for breed
ers arc unfit for the purpose. They arc,
pei bap, two small, they lack physical vigor,
or they have become old, or have been over
worked 01 biokcn down. In addition to
these defects they are not. sprightly or agile
in their motions, nor kind in their disposi
tion. Such animals should not be selected
for breeding. Nor again should the sires be
ill-shaped, overgrown, coarse, ungaiuly in
their motions and malic-ions in their disposi
tion:1. Observation sh-ws that colts usually take
ihe shape of the head, ears, chest, limbs and
lcet more from the sire than from the dam;
while the sire of the body, form of tha hips',
and color seem to bear a closer resemblance i
to the latter. For this mason the mare should .
le of pood slz ri.il proportioned and oiisy ;
of motion, and it is uucccssary to remark
that all these qualities in a high degree, arc j
iiquisife in the sire. Soruo farmers greatly !
overvalue horses that are fast trotters, ai:d j
marcs that move rapidly are hell iu market j

The Rev. Daniel Emerson, of Summit Co

giving garden seeds an early start in the fol- I
lowing manner. Having selected the quan- j
tity needed, each sort is tied by itself in a j
cloth, the name being plainly written on a j
lip of paper, and iacloscd with the seed. i
The packages are then buried about two in- !
ches deep in the ground for a week or two j
Wit ?n ready to plant, the kinds needed for j
planting are taken from the bags and used, j
They will be fomd to have swelled; perhaps, j
pprouted, and ready to grow If the ground
shauld be ip-iito dry, it is best to water the
drills after dropping the sceJs, and then cov- j
or with dry earth. Mr. .bmerson saya tuai. ct.,j
by tins plan he has never failed to raise j
plants from every seed planted, though when
put out they were often sprouted. If each
seed is placed where it is wanted to grow, it j
will save the labor of thiuuing though many ,
prefer to thin their rows, leaving the most j
prominent plants to grow. i

It is the duty of every one to improve their
