To All Whoa it Kay Concern !
Washington City, .Nov 17. Advices have
been received from Col. Alexander 'substan
tially confirming all the reports in the', news
papers respecting the dettruction ot tue con
tractors' traius by the Mormons. Brighaui
Young has issued a proclamation to the Uni
ted States troops defying tho Government,
and Counseling his people to Inutilities in; the
most determined form, and ordering tho
troops to keep out of Utih. lie fays that if
they desire to remain till spring, they.roay
da so, provided they give up their arms and
smunition. Col Alexander, in reply, in
formed Brigham Young that the troops "were
there by order cf tlie President of the United
States, and would he disposed Oi as tue com.
manding General saw proper.
When Col.' Alexander- was within thirty
miles of Fort Bridger, which place is occu
pied by Mormon treops, he received a letter
from Brigham Yeutg, through the Comman
der of, the Nauvoo Legion, -warniag the
troops out cf the Territory, but saying that
if they desire to remain till spring they may
do so, provided they givo up their arms and
amunitioiv but that. they must then leave; in
the meantime he will see thst ihey are fur
nished with provisions. Th? letter wes ac
companied by two copies of the proclamation
and a copy of 'the laws cf Utah. The Com
mander tells Col. Alexander that he is at the
Fort to carry out Brigham Youug's instruc
tions, and expresses the hope that Col. Al
exander's answer and action will be dictated
by a proper Tespoct for the rights and liber
ties of American citizens. Alexander, iu
reply, ys that Le has given Young's com
munication attentive consideration, and will
submit the letter to the General commanding,
ns'poon aa he arrives here, meaning Car. p
WinSeld, "on Ham's Fork. In the meantime,
he Jds, I have to sav that these troops were
here by order cf the President of the United
States, and that their further movement. will
depend entirely upfla the orders issued by
the competent authority. . .
Among th documents, is a letter from Col
Johnston, dated Camp on the Three Wings
of Sweet V atc-r, addressed to Assistant Ad
jutant General M'Doweli, at Ne-ar Yotk, in
which he con5rn.3 the burning of the "Con
tractor's trains by the Mormon. lie says
that the Governor's escort is four days march
behind him, with two companies cf dragoons.
He knows of no reason why Alexander frhould
attempt to reach Salt Lake by Bear river.
