AMENDMENTS TO THE CONSTITXTTION.
I also hereby, make known that at ' tho - same
time and place the following proposed Amend
ments to the Constitution will be voted upon, in
accordance with an Act of Assembly,' approved
the 12th day of May, 1857, S3 follows : "Where
as, A joint resolution proposing certain . Amend
ments to the Constitution of this Commonwealth
has been agreed toby a majority ot the members
elected to each House of tho Legislature, at two
successive sessions of the same, the first session
commencing on the first Tuesday of January, in
the 5 ear of our Lord one thousand eight hundred
and fifT-six. and tlie second session commencing
on the first Tuesday of January, in the yar of
our Lord one thousand ight hundred and fifty-
seven
And Whereas, It is provided in tho tenth arti
cle of the Constitution, that any ameudment so
agreed upon shall be submitted to tho ieoplo in
such manner and nt such time, at least three
months after being so agreed to by the two Hou
ses, as the Legislature shall prescribe j therefore.
Sr.c. 1. By it enacted by the Senate and House
of Ilevresentattves of the Commonwealth of Penn
sylvania in Oenerul Assembly nict. and it is hereby
enacted by the aidhority of tlie same. That for the
purpose of ascertaining the sense of the citizens
of this Commonwealth' iu regard to the adoption
or rejection of said amendments, or either of them
the Governor of this Commonwealth shall issue a
writ of election directed to the Sheriffof each and
every county of this Commonwealth, command
ing thera 16 give notice iiv tho usual manner, in
not less than two newspapers in each county,
provided tliatt so. many are published therein-,
that an election will be be Id in each of the town
ships, wards and di3twct therein, on the the sec
ond Tuesday of October in th.yoar of pur Ixrd
one thousand eight hundred and nftv-swen, for
the puri-ose"bf deciding upon the- adoption -or
re-ection of the said amendments, nr any of them;
which said election shall be held at the places,
and opeuefl and einsect at the time at and within
which the general elections of this Commonwealth
are held, opened and closed ; and it shalL bo .the
duty of the judges,' inspectors and clerks of each
of said townships, wards ami districts to receive
at tlie said election tickets either writteu or prin
ted, or partly written and partly printed, from
citizens duly qalified to voto for members of the
