A Sudden Change.
- The opposition factions to the Democracy
are a queer set of mortals.' ' A great change
has suddenly ' come o'er the spirit of their
dream." Hut a few days ago, and the prom
inent men of the Know-Nothing and ttlack
Republican party were zealously discussing
tho merits and claims of the rival candidates
of the Cincinnati Convention. Under the
mistaken belief that Mr. BrciiANAX would be
defeated for the nomination an impression
created on the principle" of the wish being
father to the thought, they loudly proclaimed
their admiration for this distinguished states
man, and declared that he was tho only iiutn
the Democracy could certainly elect. Now,
however, their tune is suddenly changed, and
a great difference is manifested in the conver
sation of these gentlemen at the street corners.
They have discovered that they were slightly
previous in their zeal for Mr. Buchanan.
Their idea that the South could not do justice
to a man of his independence has been explo
ded, and they now find themselves in the very
awkward predicament of being compelled to
oppose and traduce a gentleman whom two
"weeks ago they were lauding to the skies as
an able, honest and accomplished statesman.
But there were others, and their name is
legion, who formerly opposed the Democratic
party, who were looking with far different
feelings to the result of tho National Conven
tion. They are men who always bad at hart
the true interests of the countrv, and they
anxiously awaited the dec-Lion of the Conven
tion, resolved if Jamls Bccuanan should be
the nominee, to give him their cordial support.
They have known hi in long and well, as a
neighbor and friend, and they know him to be
in all respects worthy their suTragcs. Dis
gusted with the corruptions of the Know
Nothing party unwilling to join in the hue
and cry against the south, with sectional fan
atics, they have eome to the manly resolve to
cast their votes for the Democratic ticket, at
least until such times as its opponents unite

Spain, Kexico and the United States.
The difficulty be tween Spain and Mexico is
Mid to be serious, but we scarcely credit it.
The amount claimed bySpuin as losses incur
red by Spanish subjects during the struggle
of Mexico for independence is six millions.
Mexico has called for a revision of these claims,
urging that some of them are fraudulent
Spain refused this demand, and Mexico en
deavored to enforce it by. compelling the com
plainants to deposite their titles with avail
able security for the amounts already paid
thereon, threatening to confiscate the property
of the Spanish holders .should they refuse to do
so, and actually carrying out the threat in
several instances. This is resented by Spain,
and a srpuadron has been s-cnt to Vera Cruz to
back its complaints. The task to be execu
ted by this squadron, embracing nine or ten
vessels, comprising in all one hundred and
sixty guns-, is variously stated. By some a
bombardment of Vera Cruz is predicted,
whilst others assert a blockade only will be at
tempted. A new Spanish Minister accompa
nies the squadron, which left Havana on the
23d ult.
LATER.
By the Isabel at Charleston, we have two
days later news from Havana. The British
W. I. mail steamer Tyue, Vallen, comman
der, had arrivel from Vera Cruz. She re
ports that the President of the Republic of
Mexico hesitates to recognize the Spanish Min
ister, who conies with such formidable war
trappings in his traiu and that he would not
do so, until the Spanish vessels of war left the
port of Vera Cruz
A telegraphic despatch from Washington
to the New York Tribune, says that intelli
gence from Mexico indicates the existence
there of a feeling of alarm on the part of the
government respecting the Spanish expedi
tion, and foreshadows an applicatic-71 for pro
tectioQ from the United States.
