JU . 4 i i 0 Know Nothingi beginning to Enow Something ! The Gettysburg Compiler, a paper always well posted, gives us the annexed gratifying notice of what is going on in Adams county : "We are reliable informed that several de mocrats in this place, who had allowed them selves to be coaxed into joining Know No . thingism, hive "dissolved" all connection with the order, denouncing it as a regular i'NVhig swindle, to break down the Democratic party. The Whig leaders don't seem to like the Btcp I"' Eiot in New Orleans Military Ordered Out New Orleans, September 13. Our city has been the scene of soue terrible riots be tween the Amcrieaus and Irish, in which sev eral lives were lost and many badly injured. Thcro are many rumors and exaggerated re ports in circulation iu regard to the cause of it. From the best information I can obtain, I learn that the first ov-ihrsak occurred on Sunday evening, growing out of a political discussion between a party of Ame.icans and Irish. A savage fight ensued, in which fire arms and clubs were freely used. A number of the participants in the riot were badly wcunded before it could be quelled by the police. On the following day one of the wounded died, and much excitement followed in cousetuofiee. The excitement continued on the increase throughout Monday, and as soon as night set f in the riot was renewed with still greater vio lence each party apparently prepared for it. The news f-pread rapidly through the city, and it was reported that severrl had been killed, but this report fortunately proved to be premature, l'istols and guns were fired into the crowds, and many of the rioters re ceived serious injuries. The police again suc ceeded in making several arrests and restoring order. The rioters again assembled on Tuesday I evening, when the struggle was renewed with j redoubled ferocity. Two of the rioters were killed on the ground, and quite a number ' were carried off, some of them shockingly wounded. The riotous fever continued to increase during Monday, when the Mayor ordered out the National Guard and the entire police force. This had the effect of intimi dating the rioters, and up to the time of send ing this despatch, no further outbreak had taken place. The military, however, are still held under arms, to be ready in the event of a renewal of the disgraceful disturbances. A Sanctum in Nebraska. The Omaha Arrow is the name of a paper just started in Omaha, Nebraska. The editor thus describes his sanctum: Last night we slept iu our sanctum the etarry-decked heavens for a ceiling, and our mother earth for a flooring. It was a glorious night, and we were tired from our day's ex ertions. Far away, on different portions of the prairie, glimnierc-d the camp fires of our neighbors, the pawnees, Omahas, or that nob le and too often unappreciated class of our people, known as pioneers or squatters. We gathered around our little camp-fire, talked of times in the past, of the pleasing present, and the glorious future which the march of civilization should open in the land whereon we sat The new moon was just sinking be hind the western prairie roll, but slightly dis pelling the darkness which crept over our lov ed and cherished Nebraska land. - Wc thougt of distant friends and loxedones who, stretch ed upon beds of downy ease, little appreciat ed the unalloyed pleasure, the heaven-blessed comfort that dwelt with us in this far-off land. No busy hum of the bustling world served to distract our thoughts. Behind us was spread our buffalo robe, in an old Indian trail, which was to serve as our bed and bedding. The cool night wind swept in cooling breezes around us, deep laden with the perfume of a thousand hued and varied flowers. Far away up3ii our lea came the occasional long drawn howl of the prairie wolves. Talk of comfort! there was more of it in one hour of our sanctum camp life and of came life generally upon Nebraska soil, than in a whole life of fashionable, pampered world in the settlement; and, individually, we would not have exchanged our sanctum for any of those of our brethren of the press who boast of its neatness and beauty of artful adorn ments.
