vras to obtain the impeachment and removal of
the Judge for tyranny and misconduct in office.
Mr. Walker argued the case before the Legisla
ture, with a power of logic and learning which
won him much esteem.
The attempt failed. Mr. Walker then mov
ed into the interior, practicing low at Marysville,
we believe, since which we have heard of him,
only incidentally, until this expedition brings
him out as proclaimed President of an extempore
Eepublic in thcCalffornia peninsula.
"Mr. Walker is a young man yet, to have
passed through all these vicissitudes. He is not
a tr,rT,t nvsirs. nf ncrp. U( is of small
over inxuy-0- -o
size and slight frame, but erect, vigorous, used
to athletic exercise, very active in habits of per
sonal bravery, approaching to rashness, and an
nHAviVtilvf v t f will in flip Ttrnciwntinn fif bic mlr-
poses, which nothing external can shake. He is
of the best stuff out of which revolutionizing bod
ies are made. We desire to say nothing of the
merits of his present undertaking. It looks like
a very wild adventure, touched up strongly with
the mock-heroic."
. Shocking Tragedy in California.
The California State Journal says that two
white men, named Guild and Ingalls, while on a
prospecting tour, in company with nineteen Chi
namen, werelately murdered on McCloud's river,
twenty miles east of Pittsburg, Shasta county,
by.the Indians. They were camped, and fifteen
Indians came into the camp. The Indiana ap
peared friendly at first, but upon a word from the
Chief they seized tho guns and ran away with
them. Ingalls seized a club and struck the hind
mostlndian, and knocked him down. The Indians
imediately commenced firing on Guild and Ingalls
and also at the Chinamen. Six of the Chinamen
escaped, and came to Pittsburg. A party start
ed out immediately, and found the body of In
galls ; one arm cut off at the elbow, and his
head 6mashed up horribly with stones. They
also found the bodies of thirteen Chinamen ; three
had their arms cut off, and all their heads had
been smashed in with stones. The body of G uild
i-uild not be found.
