It costs co more to raise a hundred binae's cf j
iJaiawms tian a nunared bushels of cider apples;
cr ton barrel of Virgalcaus or Baxtletu, than the
same quantity of choke-pears.
An aie costing two dollars, with which a la
borer mar cut fty cords a month, is a cheaper
tool than an axe costing but one dollar, and with
trbich he can cat only forty cords.
A common dasher churn at two dollars, vtf ed
cne hundred times a year, is not so economical a
purchase ai a Kendal churn at four dollars, re
quiring but half the labor to work it.
The Portsmouth Chronicle states that in a gar
den in that city is a St. Xpdrew's pear tree,
which has borne three crops oft ars the present
ceason, and is now in bud for tbe.'urth crop.
A sewing machine has been invenyi by Chas.
Miller, of St. Louis, which makes a stitch like
back-stitching," in hand sewing, making, also,
a complete transverse button hole stitch.
A writer in the Kew York Tribune says : " I
bare examined many lightning rodi, on buildings
.struck by lightning, and I have never known a
painted rod to perform any of the duties of a con
ductor." A ten acre field, costing fifty dollars per acre,
and ditched, manured, and improved at fifty dol- j
lars more, so as to give double crops, i3 much j
more valuable, than twenty acre9 unimproved,
costing the same money.
A cheap plough" at five dollars, costing in
one season three dollars fjr repairs, and three
more in lost time to teams, men, and by retard
ing crops, is a dearer plough than one at ten dol
lars, requiring no repairs.
The laborer who wastes his strength in work
ing all day with a dull saw, because he cannot
give a shilling or afford half an hour to get it
sharpened, will was'e at least twenty Cve cents
per day, or six or seven dollars per month.
Take a good newspaper and fay for it. A
paper will be worth ten times i;s cost in any far
mer's family. If you are a L'jsband, you should
no more think cf being without such an able as
sistant, than without your bible.
The farmer who resides in the vicinity cf man
ufacturers where hard wood, or tven the soft va-
rieties are used, will do well to ap;ly the saw-
aust, m noerai quantities to ms lanas, aner pre-
paring :'. by composting. Jt decomposes readily,
and tends to keep the land light and open.
In the time cf the American revolution salt
petre for the manufacture- of powder, was made
by procuring the soil from under buildings and
leaching it like ashes. A correspondent of one
of our agricultural journals s'a'es that he has
found the soil thu impregna ei wi.h nitre folly

The man who loses half an hour cf time, with
one shilling, and wears his wagon aD-1 team equal
to two shillings more, by going ever a lor.g and
rough read to avoid a plank road toll of six-pence,
loses just two and sixpence by the operation-
This 'dees not apply to the loaded wagon, where
the loss is much greater than in the smaller
loads. .
To cure staggers in horses, take one quart of
brandy or whiskey, and dissolve cne ounce of
camphor in it, and give for a doae one gill. In
about two hours after taking this preparation,
the animal will get up. Care should be taken to
prevent them from drinking water for twenty
four hours, in which time a complete cure will
be effcend. " j
Instead of permitting the waste from your sink
spout and laundry to accumulate in filthy pools !
near your dwelling, adopt some means to render
it available for the sustenance of your crops. A
few pailfuls of this fertilizing liquid showered
over your cucumbers and melon beds in a drr
time, will impart fresh vigor, and secure a sue
cession of excellent fruit, even during a severe
drought.
Spent tan may be profitably used in compost.
Formerly it was deemed worthless for purposes
of enrichment, but recent experience has demon
strated the utter erroneousness of this opinion.
When composted with lime or other alkalescent
articles, and permitted to frrment, it soon loses
jts astringent properties, and when applied to
vegetation produces all the salutaty effects of an
imal excrement.
The fallen foliage of the forest, taken with the
rich surface soil, formed parti r bv the decom
position of previous castings, makes also a good J
ingredient in the compost heap. Mid winter or j
early spring is the most proper time for accumu- j
lating and transporting them, as they are at that j
eeason wet and consolidated by the pressure cf j
the winter snow. When dry, they are net so
easily gathered. I
Hecent accounts from the Chincha Islands j
state that a new survey has Ix en made cf the i
guano, and it was ascertained that the manure is j
several feet deeper all over the island than was i
hitherto supposed. Lare valleys were found to
exist which were hitherto unknown, completely
filled, with guano to a level with the surface of
the hills nd it is now thought that the supply
will prove almost inexhaustible.
