Steamboat Disaster Tivs Persons Killed Tea

Pouohkisfjie. July 16. The steamboat Em
pire in old and favorite boat on the New York
and Troy line exploded a boiler about two o'
clock this m trninsc. when off Clint n Point, which
is about seven miles below this city.
Tue accident, is attributed to various cause4!.
ii account say that a sloop run into the Em
pire on the larbotird side, forward of the hoi'er,
earning a breach in the guards, und the boiler
having nothing to support It, fell overboard.
Many of the passenger, however, contradict
tiis. and say that ther saw no elom that conTd
b ve ran into the steamboat. It is their nelief
that the explosion was caused bv a defect in the !
.' .boiler.

Toe boat subsequently drifted ashore, and
now lies stranded. hr h"a 1 up the stream, a per
fect wreck, paddle boxes Wiwn off. pipes shat
tered to pieces, and decks crushed
Those who say the explosion was caused by a
collission,' blame the pilot, as the night was clear
and starlight.
Tho life boat was lowered by the captain and
CTw, but the passengers leaping into it. caused
an unset, and it Is supposed that three or four
-Tjers&ns were drowned. It is also renorted that
a number leaped overboard on the first alarm,
- who doubtless perished.
. - The passengers and their baitrsge were taken
