Sunday Amusement in New Orleans.
TiGHT B ETWEES A JaCKASS AJCD THREE BctL-
ixjoa. Yesterday at Gretna, opposite the Fourth
district, was assembled,' according to previous j
notice, one cf the largest crowds of the season,
to "witness the extracrdinary exhibition of a fight
t,etween a jackass and three bulldogs. 11 the
avenuea of approach to the field of combat, were
at an early hour thronged with ns mot'ey a
crowd of unwashed republicans as had ever been
drawn together there for any purpose, cither
good or bad. The ferryboats w ere crowded to
overflowing, and plying backward with on extra
head of steam, in order to make quick time and
accommodate the rush. The cars of Lafayette
went loaded each trip, with men and women,
and snufilin juveniles, shedding tears of anxiety
for fear of missing the fan. The omnibuses did
thriving business, and where they were una
ble to accommodate the number3, the etreets
and thoroughfares were thronged with steaming
pedestrians, moving with, coats off and hats in
hand going it with a rush.
The vast arena, where this new Olympiad was
to be enacted, and where four footed bestials
were to emulate the ferocity of their instructor,
man was soon filled with its thousands. The
staid and sober denizens paid their "quarter,"
and walked in right leisurely, with wives, sweet
hearts and daughters hanging on their stalwart
arms, while "Young Americ," scorning the or
dinary bars of gates and fences,. and glorying in
tho progressive principle, clambered over the
walla, and wormed through the openings going
it free. There was no lack of old men and wo
men," youths and bright-eyed lasses, though a
Luge need, we wot well, of soap and water.
The combatants advertized to contend for the
crown of victory were a live jackass from the
crab grass pastures in and around the rural
Gretna small and checked in growth bearing
the name of 'Bough and Ready,' and three butch
er dogs of the most savage kind. Rough he was
tho jack as his coat indicated, and ready with
hoof and heel, as the skins cf his canine compe
titors afterwards abundantly testified. The
dogs were a savage looking trio two of the bull
terrier kind, with jaws fit to crush the bones of
giants, and the third a blood-hound, strong and
well built, with demoniac eyes that glared out a
fierce and lurid fire. The three had been bred
in butcher Btalls, and learned the taste of blood
to lap it with a fierce delight.
Tho animals were placed in a circle two hun
dred feet in circumference the dogs being leash
ed and held by biped comrades while the jack,
untethered, grazed around the arena, wandering j lbe sJStem, and results variously, in Liver Com
sat his own sweet will." after the fashion of hislPlaiut Jaundice, Dyspepsia, &c. We should,
fathers from immemorial time. At a given sig
nal the dogs were let loose, one at a time, and,
in tarn, dashed at the jack, each one making
passes at his nose. Simple and stupid, as jack
asses are supposed to be and of a surety they
are a generation much abused and little appre
ciated in this regard the individual in question
was "up to snuff," and quietly raising his pro
boscis to keeB it out of harm's wn v vrpnt tn wnrlr
with his fore feet and heels with anrecision thatitlie 6J6em-
argued science at every blow. In a little less
than no time the fi rst dog was "no whar," for
the jack, after sundry feints and dodges, and sci
entific manoeuvring, sent in a facer that took
Boseat the root of the neck, knocking his shoul
der out of joint, and rolling -him over like a
ball. Bose would have "hollered nuff," but
singing out was against the principal of his
plucky breed, and lie raised himself for another
onset.
At this point a second dog was let loose, and
then a third, and the three went it around the
coursejack with his head erect, and stirring up
the canines with an energy that made them
howl. At him the dashed, like wolves from the
Appenines, biting at his throat, making the hair
fly and the blood flow like a storm. As this
point it was apparent that tho jack had it all his
own way, and could lick up all his enemies like
salt ; when an interesting crowd of the specta
tors, fraternizing with the canines, broke into
the enclosure, and laying violent hands on the
jack, eo encumbered him in the free use of his
heels that the bloodhound got him by the throat
and brought him to the ground fas a aredhead-
J - . V ... ... .
ea iioosier expresseu it; "Kerflop : Ahis was
too much even for the stoicism of the ass; and
imitating the example of a remote progenitor
of him bestride by Balaam "opened his mouth
and spake!" Jack "gave tongue," and brayed
nut a bray that startled the slumbering echoes !
Then there was another rush of the mad crowd,
and so filled was the arena by bipeds and qua
drupeds that it was impossible to see. A minute
afterwards, the crowd having cleared away, the
dogs were again ia leash, and the jack stood
erect in the midst of his enemies, unconcerned
and stupid, torn ia hair and hide, and bleeding
at every pore.
What further transpired, we were unable to
see, for the great majority of the crowd, disgust
ed to heart-sickness, left the ground.
Whether dog or jack were declared victor we
jndge is of little importance to the public as to
the parties concerned the whole affair being a
most savage and disgraceful exhibition, and got
ten up with the express aud only design of draw
ing dimes from a too gullible community.
Take it all in all, the whole affair was of a
most revolting character, as cruel to tho beasts
that played therein their senseless and unwilling
pans, as 10 11s originators it was disgraceful.
Having to do with the affair only as a fact, we
mention it being responsible neither for the
grosss immortality of the exhibition nor for the
consciences of the authorities who permit such
ecenes, and on such a day.
Any way, we would go our pile, at two to one,
that turn the animals loos together and barring
biped interference and biped sympathy, the
jack would "fan out" the crowd ! Who'll
bet !

An iron wedge and & hatchet, thoroughly dye a

were eight or ten large wounds upon the vic

would either of them have caused death. Beside
these, a large number, of small punctured
wounds covered the face and head, showing a

for they must have been inflicted while the man

Two wounds were found upon the woman ; one
in each temple, which bore the appearance of

HASTINGS' COMPOUND SYRUP OF NAPHTHA,
A quick and positive Cure for Consumption, decline, asthma, spitting of blood, night sweats,
husky throat, wasting of the flesh, bronchitis, coughs, colds, and all deseases of the chest m.
lungs.
This celebrated preparation is pleasant to the taste, and is so speedy in its operations that j.
tients plainly feel its pood effects in a few minutes after taking the first iiose.
Hastings' Compound Syrup of IV'aptha
Is now Acknowledged by all the ablest physicians of both hemispheres, to be a quick and
itive remedy for arresting the formation of tubercles on the lungs ; and removing tnose aire.-.;;.,
formed ; and also to be the speediest and most effective of all medicinal agents in the cure oi ;.
other deseases of the throat, chest and lungs. Language cannot express the value of lliistiups
Naptha Syrup in these diseases. It not only .cures them effectually, but it gives immediate e.
dence of its ability to do so ; for in a few minutes after the first dose has been taken, the patie.i
feels that a powerful agent is in the system, strongly working for his good. Its operations i-
never delayed: It at once flies to, and attacks the
chher medicines : and that disease must be deeply seated indeed which can resist its unrivalled
influence. Hence it has freouentlv cured a painful couch in a day, which had defied other popu
lar remedies for a month ; and has removed
toest, in a few minutes, by the surprising energy of its action 111 clearing the passages ot one
and phlegm. It is believed that no person has given Hastings' Naphtha Syrup a trial, who has
not felt benefit from it, and acknowledge its virtues. And this conviction is further established
by the opinions of the London Launcet, London Medical Times, and most other responsible pub
ications. devoted to the same interests. Until the appearance of the Naphtha Syrup, the medi
cal faculty had always regarded Consumption as an incurable disease, and the records 01 medical
science exhibited no authenticated case that weighed seriously against that opinion. Since Dr.
Hastings' discovery however, of the new and greatest property of Naphtha, when united with
other ingredients, nearly a thousand cases of absolute phthisics positively cured through its
agency, have been substantiated ; and this well established fact, in connection with a mass of ex
periments successfully made of its virtues by the ablest physicians of Europe, clearly prove that
Hastings' Compound Syrup of Naptha isa positive cure for Consumption, even in its worst stag s.
Three of the main causes of this properly of Naphtha have been discovered. They are its extra
ordinary sublety, strength, and pervasiveness ; for the moment it is received into the system, it
extends itself throughout, making a passage of every pore, no matter how much clogged up they
may have previously been by foreign substances. Hence it operates on the diseusd lungs by Hs
lodeeinsr the particles of corruption in the strength of its ascent to the upper regions of the frame

ness of action and energy of Hastings' Naphtha Syrup, in all the diseases for which it is recom
mended, that from the time thev commence taking it patients know
THAT IT IS CUBING THEM ;
an effect nearly the reverse of that which attends the earlier use of every other known medicinal
remedy. For Coughs, Colds, Sore Throat, Night Sweats, Pains in the Breast, Buck, Ac, spit
ting of blood, bilious and asthmatic Affections, it is also ml 111 it ted to be the speediest and most
vigorous and effective remedy extant : and its effect in nil Asthmatic complaints is equally deci
sive and remarkable. Lassitude of the niinrt : flabbiness and wasting of the flesh ; and all dis
position to inactivity and melancholy forebodings, are also quickly corrected by he Naphtha Sy
rup ; which, in a wonderful manner revives the spirits, corrected by the flesh and muscles bra
ces the nerves and increases the weight. Thus, those who use it according to directions, gener
ally increase its weight about a pound a week ; and may take it for no other purpose than the
dfssipation of melancholy, or the increase of bodily strength. In fine, a single trial of Hastings'
Compound Syrup of Naptha, is all that f required to secure the confidence of patients, and cause
hem to forego all other remedies in its favor. The syrup is made up in six ounce bottles, each
accompanied with a pamphlet, containing directions, certificates, &c. Trice one dollar each, or
six bottles packed up in a box, and ready for transportation to any part of the world, can be had
for five dollars.
N. 1. Hastings' Naphtha Syrup, being a very expensive preparation, cannot be left with
Agents on sale, or return, as is the case with the majority of the quack nostrums of the day,
which cost little more than the price of the bottles. Persons who want it to sell again must pay
cash for it, with the usual commission off. Therefore patients who cannot obtain it in the places
where they reside, should write to us direct for a supply, and we will forward it to them without
delay (packed up in a manner to secure its safe delivery) provided they can be reached by Ex
press, Stage, Route, or any other mode of conveyance. All letters must be post paid contain
the price, of the number of bottles ordered, and be directed to C. "V. CLICliENEU & CO., No.

I have made a chemical examination of the Vegetable Powder prepared by Mr. Emanuel Lyon)
for the purpose of destroying insects. I do not find it to contain anything deleterious to healthy

I have analized Emanuel Lyon's Magnetic Towders for the destruction of insects, and certify

I would say that is a combination of various vegetable substances having a peculiar influence on
the insect kingdom, and that it may be used with perfect safety. In reference to its utility, its
effects are astonishing. I belive it to be a skilfully prepared substance by which a valuable re

it. Dr. Means, one of our very best physicians
freely states that he considers it the best remedy
we have fur pulmonary diseases, and that he has
cured more cacs of Croup w ith it than any
other medicine he ever administered.
-Our clergyman of the Baptist Church says
that during the run of Influenza here this sea
son, he has soon cures from your medicine he
could scarcely have believed without Eeeing.

"It gives me pleasure to certify the value and
efficacy of 'Ayer's Cherry Pectoral, which I
consider peculiarly adapted to cure diseases cf
the Throat and Luugs."
Cures of severe diseases uprn the Lungs have
been effected by Cherry Pectoral in such ex
treme cases ns warrant the belief that a remedy-
has at length been found that can be depended!
on to cure the Cougl s, Colds and Consumption '
which carry from our midst thousands every
year. It is indeed a medicine to which the afllic
ted can look with confidence for relief, and they
should not fail to avail themselves of it.

NTOUK'S
liCiiiECATOIS.
This delightful and popular article in the best
preparation for the hair which long experience
and scientific research has produced, either as
.in article for the toilet, or its beneficial effects
in all the diseases to which the human hair is
liable. It will impart to the roughest and coar-
sest hair the most beautiful appearance, entire- ask the Public to give him a call, and cca
ly cleansing it from all impurities. ifi lent his work will recommend itself.
. v
But while we assert that it is the best article
for the toilet of those who wish
to retain the
hair in all its youthful
LUXURIANCE AND BEAUTY,
it must not be forgotten that in all diseases of
the hair or scalp, such as the falling of the hair
dandruff, pimples, or sores on the scalp, &c, it
is, perhaps ihe article which has given decided
satisfaction in every instance where it has been
used.
Its operation in case of baldness is peculiarly
active, so that, in numerous, where other reme
dies have been tried in vain, STORR'S CHEM
ICAL INVIGORATOR has superseded the orna
ments of art, by reinstating, in full plentitude,
tho permanent gifts and graces of nature. It
is possessed of a character wholly differing from
the Oils, Grease, Restoratives, &c, which are
now so numerously foisted on the public, under
the pretence of being newly discovered for bald
ness, gray hair, &c.
Starr's Invigorator
has now been tested for years, and its efEcacy
has been proved by thousands, Every year its
reputation and sales have increased, until more
of it is consumed annually than of any other
preparation for the hair ever offered to the Amer
ican public. It is compounded on strictly sci
entific principles, and the proprietor will stake
his reputation on its efficacy.
Its extraordinary cheapness places it within
the reach of the humblest family, and its con
ceded value insures it a placo on tbe most luxu
rious toilet.
