of war, as she had no pennant flying.
The health of Mr. King had not improved,
and he despairs of recovery. He had gone to
Jlatnnzas on board the United States steamer
Fulton. Mr. King had not an interview with
the Captain General, in consequence of . a slight
misunderstanding. Etiquette forbids the Captain-General
from paying his respects personal
It to strangers, but in consequences of Mr.
King's health, General Cancdo waived etiquette,
and agreed to visit Mr. King at nn appointed
hour. He did not Veep his promise, and the
next morning Mr. King addressed a note through
the American Consul, reminding the Captain
General of his failure to keep the appointment.
The latter immediately called; Mr. King de
clined seeing him, as did also the ladies of his
part. Upon Mr. King leaving tor Matanzas,
however, an Interchange of cards took place.
The contract for the erection of a li :e of Tel
egraph in Cuba has been awarded to Mr. Ken
nedy of Philadelphia. He is to get $225 per
mile, being $125 less than the other bids.
The demand for Sugars has been good. The
-stock is estimated at 30.000 boxes A contract
for a shipment of 3000 boxes to Antwerp has
been made.
The American barque Martha Ann, from Sa
vannah, for Havanna, has also been fired iuto
"by the English frigate Vesta, on suspicion of
being a. slaver.
Among the passengers on board the Black
"Warrior, is Mr." Benjamin, the Senator elect
from Louisiana, and also Max Maretzek, who
precedes his Optra troupe.
The Black Warrior encountered a seveie gale
off the coast of Florida, which lasted twenty
hours. She brings Havana papers of the 17th,
but they contain nothing of importance. The
health of the city was good.
LATER FROM HAVANA.
ARRIVAL OF THE ISABEL,
The Seizure of the TJ. S. Hails.
Charleston, Feb. 28.
The steamship Isabel has arrived at this port,
with dates from Havana to the 22d.
The Secretary of Vice President King is among
the passengers. lie is a bearer of despatches
fir the Government. It is supposed to be on
business relating to the seizure of the mails of
the Empire City and Cresent City, which has
caused a great excitement at Havana.
The American Consul made a strong protest,
-"but had received no reply from the Captain Gen
eral. The Isabel, however, was allowed to leave the
port without being searched.
Vice President King was at Matantas, much
improved in health. He is sanguine of a spec
dj recovery from the effects of the sugar cure.
The two nieces of Vice President King are in
excellent health.
The U. S. steamer Fulton made the quickest
run from the States to Havana on record. In a
heavy gale she made 90 miles iu three Hours
and five minutes. She met with ttt accident but
losing one of her boats during the storm. Mr.
Thomas Kilpatrick, of Philadelphia, is the en
gineer on board of the Fulton.
A negro had been garroted for killing a Span
ish officer. It was the same instrument ou which
the ill-fated Gen. Lopez was executed.
There were about 30,000 soldiers in the city
and vicinity, and they are very insolent to Am
ericans, but they take good care to respect Un
cle Sam's uniform.
The Captain General had ordered that the
troops, as well as the prisoners, at Cardenas,
should be employed in the labor of clearing away
the ruin and rebuilding the warehouses at thai
place, and that a subscription should be opened
4 to relieve those who are suffering.
The cholera had appeared with some violence
at Baracoa.
Another slight shock of earthquake was ex
perienced at St. Jago on the 25th ult.
The outrage of stopping the mail bags was
perecrd in by the authorities at Havana.
Those of the Black Warrior and Emf ire City had
hen taken possession of by the police and ex
amined. The seal of that of the Empire City
was broken.
The small pox was still raging there.
Gen. Washington's Watch. It is stated that
Mr. H. G. Riell, of New York, lias in his pos
session the identical watch worn by Gen. Wash
ington, it is rerresi nted as a vcrv massive
watch, with very thick plain cases of pure gold.

England, and was bought by Benjamin Frank
lin, when he was Commissioner of the United
Colonies. The watch also strikes the hour, the

Died In Summcrhill township, Cambria
county, Per.n., on the 23d ultimo, after a short
illness, Mrs. Esther, consort of George Mur
ray, Esq., in the 47th year of her age.
In the death of this estimable lady, a devoted
family has lost an affectionate wife and mother :
