Albany, Jan. 22, 1853.
In the District Court to-day, a verdict was
rendered on behalf of the United States against
Wni. A. IlilHard, of Bridgewater, Oneida, for
using ft postage stamp after it had been once
used already in violation of the act of 1851.
This is the first conviction for this offence.
Ttxam Attacking Tamanllpas.
New Orleans, Jan 29.
Adtiees received from Tampico, dated the 18th,
tftte that there was great excitement in that
..;tv. caused bv the report that 2500 Texans
were marching upon Tamaulipas, under Col.
Tlumn, Rodriguez, and twenty-three of the Na
tional Guard had been shot at Tampico for mili
tary offences. . Governor Keys, of !San Luis Po
tosi was lately assassinated. Governor Garden
and General Cassanova, with a number of polit
ical prisoners, had left for Vera Cauz.
Death of a Member of Congress.

The Hon. Alexander II. Buel, member of Con
cress from New York, died this morning at his
lodeings in this city, after a few days iUness of

morning train to Fairfield, New York, his late
residence, in charge of the Sergeant at Arms of
the House, attended by a committee, consisting
of his late colleagues, Messrs. Wells, Walbridge,
King and Jones, and by a number of his friends.
The customary announcements will be made
in either House to-morrow.
Meagher in Boston.
Boston, Jan. 25.
Mr. Meagher, the Irish patriot, on his arri
val to-day, met with aordial reception, by the
Committee of Arrangements. He was conduct
ed to the Kevere House, where he was formally
welcomed by J. B. Harvey, to which Mr.
Meagher made an appropriate response. He
was introduced to General Pierce and several
distinguished citizens. This evening he deliv
ered a lecture at the new Music Hall, on the
subject of Australia. Mayor Seaver presided.
The State Printing Allotment.
IIarrisbcrg, Jan. 24.
The two Houses of the Legislature met in
Convention in the Hall of the House, at 12 o'
clock to-day to open the bids and allot the pub
lic printing. After a long debate upon the
question of proceeding to open the bids, the
convention agreed upon an adjournment until
the 21st of February, without opening any of
the bids offered. The object is, in the meantime,
to revise the whole system of executing the pub
lic work, and, if possible, provide for the elec
tion of a State Printer.

New Orleans, Jan. 25.
By an arrival from Vera Cruz, we have most
Important intelligence from Mexico.
President Arista resigned his office, and re
tired from the Capital on the Cth inst., leaving
the datiey of his office to devolve upou'Senor
Cavellos. the Judge of the Supreme Court, who
has become President ad interim.
General Minon, in command of the Govern
ment troops, has been beaten in a regular bat
tle with the Revolutionists. The popular cause
is triumphant everywhere, and the return of
Santa Anna is most anxiously looked for.

Washington, Jan. 2G.
Senator Clemens has received a despatch,
stating that Mr. King arrived at Key West on
the 22d. His health was no better than when
he left Washington, and he has, himself, lost all
hope of recovery, and will remain in Key West
for the present. Just contrary to this, is a de
spatch received by Senator Charlton, from the
office of the Morning News, of Charleston, da
ted Jan. 25, stating that the steamer Fulton ar
rived at Havana on the 22d. Mr. King's health
was better than when he left Norfolk. Mr.
Clemens' despatch probably gives the true ver
sion. Settlement of the Difficulty between tne
Pennsylvania. Itailroad and
Bingham & Dock.

An
important arrangement was consummated
rday, for Philadelphia interests aud the

State at large. A contract has been entered in
to between the Pennsylvania Railroad Company
and Bingham & Dock, by which the latter give
up all control of all the passenger trains run
ning in connection with those of the Pennsylva
nia Railroad Company over the Columbia Rail
road, to that company, Bingham & Dock will,
uuder this arrangement, act as local agents at
Philadelphia, and still retain their authority
over the Columbia Railroad as regards the way
business.
Accident on the Ohio and Pennsylvania
Railroad.
Pittsburg, Jan. 2fi.
" Yesterday afternoon, the 4 o'clock mail train,
consisting of three cars, on the Ohio and Penn
sylvania Railroad, when opposite New Brighton
Bridge, met with an accident of a very serious
nature. The axle of the middle car broke and
precipitated it down an embankment of 40 feet.
The other cars passed, on in safety. Several of
the passengers in the iffiddle car were injured,
but none were killed. The- following named
persons are the principal sufferers :
Mr. Scott of Philadelphia, (brother to Mr.
Scott, of the firm of Scott, Baker & Co.,) head
badly cut ;' Mr. Moss, book-keeper of the firm
of Speering, Good & Co., of Philadelphia, leg
broken; Mr. Cheseman, of Salem, Ohio, back
broken; Samuel Schiedegger, on his way to
New York, injured; Mr. Skeen, of Pittsburg,
shoulder dislocated ; Ex-Sheriff Forsyth, of this
county, was badly wounded in the breast.
