Tto integrity ia unsullied, and Lis walk and con
versation blameless, while Lis public career has
excited universal admiration. It is true he haa
teen the subject of some vituperation aud abuse,
jjut this has been the fate of all distinguished
Democrats.
Those who have been the people's greatest i.-i-TOrites
have been the incest calumniated. It is
'the rough brake which virtue must go thro."
To say tliut the p ople of this State will be ut all
influenced by the petty slanders which personal
malice or political hostility can coin so easily is
an insult upon their intelligence and justice so
ross that we have a right to repel it with iu-
lin-uation. We have yet to learn that any of
Mr Buchanan's competitors for the nomination
have escaped this universal fate. But when we
lo ascertain that either of them has passed
through life unassailed by detraction, we are
prepared to express our conviction, that such a
man is unfit and unworthy to be the candidate
of the democracy for the office of "President ;
-Wo unto hiw of whom all men speak well."
Among the many elements of popularity which
Mr. Buchanan combines, not the least is the
character of the opposition to him. It is not
based on any charge, which if true, would prove
him to be wanting in honesty, ability or fidelity
to the Constitution, and shows only that he has
been fearless and faithful in the performance of
his political duties. It is absurd to believe that
a nun cast in such a mould, could fail to enlist
the enthusiastic support of a people like ours.
Thus far we have in arguments a priori in
reasons which show how utterly improbable it is
that our candidate can be other than the most
popular man among us. Hut the history of
Pennsylvania for the last twenty-five years,
proves it as an incontestable fact. He was five
times chosen to the House of Representatives,
in Congress, the last time under circumstances
which made his election a triumph to the friends
of Jackson, such as no other man in the State
had achieved. No appointment which President
Jacksou made gave more pleasure to the people
of the State than that which showed his confi
dence in Mr. Buchnnau by making him Minister
to Russia. He was three times elected to the
Senate of the United States, an honor which
Pennsylvania has never conferred on any other
man. His appointment as Secretary of State
Ly Mr. Polk, was well known to have been made
pith the warm concurrence and approbation of
General Jackson, and if anything could have
increased our affectionate regard for our hero
and statesman of the age, his uniform endorse
ment of Mr. Buchanan would had that effect.
But better and more direct evidence than all
th;3 of Mr. Buehauau's standing at home is af
forded by the action of the people on the very
question of the Presidency. Mr. Buchanan's
friends ia Pennsylvania have three times presen
ted him as a candidate for that great otlice, and
each time they were sustained by the full tide
of public approbatien. The greatest and best
men of the nation have been set up against him,
and vigorously pressed by their supporters.
But in the primary meetings of the people, and
in the Couuty and State Conventions, no name1
has stool for a moment before the competion of
his. We fearlessly ussert.that since the days of
Washington, .there has lived but one man in any
part of the Union who could rival Mr. Buchan
an in the affections of Jiis own State.
We have uot addressed you for the purpose of
proving that his claims to the Presidency are
entitled to your respect. Lf you doubt his
talents, his patriotism and his honesty,
our appeal at this time of day would be
in vain. If his life of labor in your cause
and ours, has mado no favorable iinpres
sion on the country, it is too late to create a re
putation for him now. He comes before you
either with something better than a manufactu
red character, or else with none at all that is
worthy of your attention. We ask you to subject
his life to the severest inquisition that justice
will allow, and if he does not sustain it, reject
him. But we demand that he shall not be struck
down by paltry slanders and, least of all, by the
absurd falsehood which charges him with want
of unpopularity.
if the National Conventien shall decide against
our candidate, we caunot promise that our peo
ple will bear the decision without bitter mortifi
cation ;for their State pride is thoroughly arous
ed. If the man they now offer is set aside, they
have no hope of succeeding at another time. If
Pennsylvania must wait until she presents a
more unexceptionable man than Mr. Buchanan,
she must wait forever.
Still the Democracy of this State will be true
aud faithful to tbhir party, and their country.
It will not be their fault if the rule of our op
ponents is to be perpetuated. Whatever the
Convention may do, the Democrats of Pennsyl
vania will be at their posts ready to perform
their whole duty, aud to present, as they always
have presented, a living rampart between the
Constitution and its foes. But if they are per
mitted to do battle under the leadership of their
own fellow-citizen the well tried friend, whom
they know, and trust, and love it will energize
their efforts, and add thousands to their major-
His nomination would give them an opportuni- j
tj not only to vindicate him. but to demonstrate
how false is the dishonoring charge agaist them
selves, of being so ignorant, so unjust, or 60 un
grateful, as not to appreciate a man whose mer
its are acknowledged by all the world besides.
Their hearts will throb to meet the encounter
on such terms. There will be a rapture in the
"tnfe which is to be crowned with a victory like
that.

whilst I was iu Cleveland ; and w as brought
home from that place to Middleburg, where I lay
on my back fur over two months. lor three
weeks of this time, I was in the most intense
suffering and agony. 1 lay with my limbs in
one position, and could not stir muscle, nor
have my bed changed. My screams could be
heard ail over the neighborhood, so intense was
my suffering. When every other remedy proved
valueless, 1 had recourse to your invaluable
Petroleum, of w hich I had made but three appli

altogether but two bottles and a half, and am
now well. I can get any number of persons to
testify to the above facts, if necessary.

BLACKWOOD'S EDINBURGH MAGAZINE
(Tory.)
These Reprints have now been in successful
operation in this country for ttrtnty years, and
their circulation is constantly on the increase
notwithstanding the comp-ctition they encounter
from American periodicals of a similar class and
from numerous Eclectics znl Magazines mad up
of selections from foreign periodicals. This
fact shows clearly the high estimation iu which
they are held by the intelligent reading public,
and affords a guarantee that they arc established
on a Arm basis, and will be continued withvut
interruption.
Although these works are distinguished Ly the
political sha les above indicat.-cL yet but a small
portion of their contents is devoted to po.itcal
subjects. It is their literary character which
gives them their chief value, aud in that they
stand confessedly far above all other journals of
their class. Llackwood, still under the masterly
guidance of Christopher North, maintains its an
cient celebrity, i.nd is, at this time, unusually at
tractive, from the serial works of Bulwtr and
other literary notables, written for that maga
zine, and first app earing in its columns both in
Great Britain and in the United States. Such
works as --The Caxtons"' and "My New Novel,"
(both by Bulwtr), "My Peninsular Medal," "Iho
Green Hand," and other serials, of which numer
ous rival editions are issued by the leading pub
lishers in this country, have to Lc reprinted by
those publishers from the pages of Blackwood,
after it has been issued by Mess. Scott & Co.. so
that subscribers to the Reprint of that Magniinu
may always rely on having the earliest reading
of these fascinating tales.
