I WOLLU iOT IIE.
A correspondent is furnishing the Baltimore
Dispatch with a scries of amusing poetical effu
sions. The following is a good parody on the
song " I would not die in Spring Time" and
contains much of what Sam Slick call3 "human
nature."
I would not die in Spring time, i ...
- vncn worms begin" to crawl"; r "
When cabbage plants are shooting up,
And frogs begin to squall :
'Tis then the girls arc full of charms,
And smile upon thc men ;
When lamb and peas arc in their prime
I would not perish then.
I would not die in Summer,
When trees are filled with fruit
And every sportsman has a gun,
Thc little birds to shoot.
The girls then wear their Bloomer dress,
And half distract the men,
It is thc time to sweat it out
I would not perish then.
I would not dio in Autumn,
When new-mown hay smells sweet,
And little pigs arc rooting round
For something nice to cat.
'Tis then the huntsman's wild halloo,
Is heard along the glen,
And oysters 'gin to fatten up
I would not perish then.
I would not die in Winter
For one might freeze to death ;
When blustering Boreas sweeps around,
And takes away one's breath.
When sleigh bells jingle horses snort,
And buckwheat cakes are tall ;
In fact : this is a right good world,
I would not die at all !
MISCELLANEOUS
Singular IMiciiomciia.
A curious incident occurred here (New-York)
yesterday. You arc no doubt aware that for
some months past a number of men have been
engaged in recovering things from thc wreck of
the British, frigate Iluzzar, which was lost at
Ilcllgatc, in the East River, during thc revolu
tionary war. The object is to get at a large
sum of money which it is said was in that ves
sel at the time of her loss. Various articles,
such as bottles, cannon balls, bombshells, &c,
have been brought to light.
I had in my hand yesterday, a small bomb
shell or hand grenade, which came from that
vessel, and being anxious to know if thc pow
der which was in it had retained its virtue, I
broke it and emptied its contents on a news
paper. It had an odor of burned gunpowder,
and in a few minutes after it was exposed, it
became warm ; soon it emitted a smoke, and at
length it burned through the paper. Fearing
an explosion I threw water on it. This is a
curious fact, and worthy attention.

t AN INCIDENT IN HIS LIFE.
Sime of the zealots in the Cuban cause are
enOouvoring to magnify General Lopez into an
extraordinary hero." He is no doubt a brave
ingj, but judging from his history thus far, he
g .iy.Jij MriUaani discreet. Thc Savannah
iSews one of his warmest admirers, relates
quite a thrilling incident in his history :
" It is stated that during thc celebrated Car
list war in .Spain, General Lopez and about
seven hundred others wcro taken prisoners and
carried to Cantavieja, a fortification among the
mountains of Arragon. The Governor of thc
castle was said to have been a heartless wretch,
revelling in bloody massacres and delighting in
acts of torture. During thc dreadful confine
ment of these prisoners, thc royal army com
manded by General San Miguel marched to
Cantavieja, for thc purpose of raising thc siege.
Thc place was defended admirably by nature,
in a narrow defile of thc mountains ; but thc
Spanish General, undismayed by thc apparent
impregnability of thc fortress, continued to bc
Eicgo it, until evidences of his 6ucccss were soon
discovered by his enemies. Thc Governor there
upon resolved upon a scheme which could only
have entered thc mind of a tyrant in whose
eyes thc sight of blood was a gratification. lie
determined to put all thc prisoners to death,
from General Lopez down, and requested thc
General to notify San Miguel of his intention,
hoping by this threat to stop thc siege. Lopez
announced this bloody resolution in his letter,
but requested General San Miguel not to allow
this threat to interfere with thc prosecution of
thc siege. Thc Governor, finding that the let
ter produced no effect, and that thc works were
rapidly advancing to consummation, announced
to his prisoners that he had ordered their exe
cution ; but that he would allow Lopez to go to
San Miguel in person, and explain thc circum
stances in which they were placed, first recei
ving his word of honor to
iturn after delivering
thc message.
Lopez was soon in thc midst of San Miguel's
tfoops, who hailed his appearance with great
demonstrations of joy. He explained the threat
of the Governor, discussed the plans for thc
siege, gave nil thc information he possessed as
to thc weakest points of thc fortification, and
then rose up to return to his fate. San Miguel
objected ; the army loudly opposed his going
from their midst to be put to death by thc bru
tal Governor; but thc noble Lopez overcame all
their entreaties, and surrounded by his sorrow
ing but admiring friends, he bade them all a
kind farewell, wishing them success, even though
he himself might be thc sacrifice ! The siege
proceeded vigorously, for San Miguel knew that
he could only save Lopez and thc other prison
ers by accomplishing his purposes with as much
speed as his means would allow.
Thc Governor and those defending thc castle
had no time left to put their prisoners to death,
as they were kept in constant occupation with
the work of resistance and defence. The town
was soon taken. The Governor and the garri
son were dismayed ; but Lopez, thc patriot and
thc hero, with his gallant band, were saved.
Death of an Aged Indian.
Old Bccktootii, a very aged Indian, expired
a few days since at his residence, a short dis
tance below thc mouth of the Little Valley Creek,
in Cattaraugus county. He was thc last, with
thc exception of Gov. Blacksnakc, of thc aged
Indians who have lingered so long in the land
of thc living. One by one, like our own fathers
of thc Revolution, have thc Indian chieftains
passed away, and soon the last will be on his
way to thc " spirit land." Thc following notice
of Bucktooth, from the pen of lion. S. A. Brown,
recently appeared in thc Jamestown Journal:
"A few months ago, when returning from a
railroad meeting at Olean, curiosity induced us
to travel out of the way a mile on foot, to sec
an aged Indian by the name of Bucktooth, said
to be 120 years old. His wigwam stood on thc
banks of thc Allegheny. An abundant supply
of corn, curiously fastened together by thc
husks, Euspcnded over poles, with bark placed
over it as a security against thc weather, decked
the inclosurc around thc dwelling ; and within,
on a long, low bench, placed against thc wall,
on which was a mat, which was his scat by day
and couch by night, eat thc livingrclic of by
gone years. During our stay he arose from his
scat, and stood as erect as a youth of twenty.
Mcthought, as I gazed on this aged man, thy
health has not been impaired, nor thy physical
powers prematurely wasted, by means of thc
luxuries which civilization bring3.
A Candidates Withdrawal.
A candidate for thc office of Coroner, in Lou

JIUGE LEWISi
TESTIMONY OF HIS WHIG OPPONENTS.
The following, from the last "Union and Tri
bune," of Lancaster, is a just aad honorable
tribute to the worth of Judge Lewis. When wc
consider that the Grand Jury of Lancaster
county, drawn at random from thc wheel, must
of necessity ue largely uuig, aau mcrpjp"
which it is published and commented upon, is a
leading Whig journal, it must be inferred, that
thc Judge occupies a position among his neigh
bors of a high and commanding character. If
there was thc slightest truth in thc numerous
slanders of thc scurrilous Whig prints, this tes
timony to thc worth of Judge Lewis never could
have been extorted from political opponents.
Read, ponder, and reflect upon it, all ye who
arc doubters, and you cannot fail to be satisfied
that Judge Lewis is pre-eminently fitted for thc
position of Judge of thc Supreme Court:
Judge Eevis.
The Grand Jury, in their report, presented to
thc Court on Saturday last, allude to Judges
Lewis, Grosh and Shteffer, in the following
terms:
"Thc Grand Jurors in closing their report
avail themselves of thc occasion to tender to his
Honor, Judge Lewis, and to his associates,
Judges Grosh and Shacffcr, their respectful ac
knowledgements for the faithful and efficient
manner in which they havc discharged their
official duties during their administration, now
about closing by virtue of thc adopted amend
ment to thc Constitution."
In answer, Judge Lewis, on behalf of thc
Court, returned thanks to thc Grand Jury for
thc kind and complimentary terms in which
they had been pleased to refer to his associates
and himself, and proceeded to state that his
connection with our Courts as Presiding Judge
would cease with the present term.
Judge Lewis has presided over the Courts of
Lancaster county for a number of years, and
now that his connection with thc Bench of this
Judicial district is about to cease, it is but just
to bear testimony to thc great ability, energy
and integrity which have characterized his ad
ministration of thc Judicial affairs of this large
and populous county. The reputation enjoyed
by our preceding Judges Franklin, Hayes,
Champneys, &c, was such as to preclude any
one of their successors from meeting the expec
tations of the bar and the people except he were
possessed of high intellectual and moral quali
ties. In thc fact that Judge Lewis fully an
swered such expectations and enjoys a reputa
tion .surpassed by none of the Judges who pre
ceded him, consists - his chief praise. Thc
promptness with which he despatched business
was such as to justify thc Legislature in dis
pensing with thc Mayor's and the District Court
-thus saving thc county a considerable eum
annually.
Judge Lewis, as our readers arc well aware,
is now a candidate on thc " Democratic " ticket,
for Judge of thc Supreme Court, in opposition
to the Whig nominees as able and upright
men as were ever placed in nomination for office.
It is enough for Whigs to know that Judge
Lewis is politically opposed to them, and that
their own nominees are worthy their warm sup
port. Wc have recently seen in the papers one
or two articles personally and violently abusive
of Judge Lewis representing his character and
acts in terms which none who know him can be
induced to credit. Thc publication of these at
tacks is to bo regretted, inasmuch as they arc
calculated to do thc Judge good and our ticket
harm. They are, we know, deprecated on that
ground; by intelligent and respectable Whigs.
The Locofoco papers arc using thc same weapons
against Judge Jcssup and, as the result will
prove, using them to his advantage.
For our own part, wc shall exert all our ener
gies to insure thc success of the whole Whig
ticket, but, in so doing, we prefer to confine
ourselves to legitimate political warfare, be
lieving such course to be best calculated to ad
vance the interests of our party.
Revolution in Italy. There is a general im
pression, among the observant minds in Europe,
that Italy is again on thc eve of a violent and
sanguinary revolution. Almost every foreign
newspaper that wc read every one which dares
to intimate its opinions is full of forebodings
as to some great trouble at hand. Even the
conservative papers of London and Tari3 do not

preparations of Austria show that thc Govern
