USE THE P E N.
BY J. E. CARPENTER.
Use the pen there's magic in it,
Never let it lug behind;
Write thy thought the pen can win it
From the chaos of the mind.
Many a gem is lost forever
Ey the careless passer-by;
But tl e gurie of thought sliould never
On the mental pathway lio.
Use the pen, reck r.ot tha t others'
Take a higher flight than thine;
Many an ocean wave still smothers
Feail of price bet.eUli the brine;
Cot the diver finds the treasure,
And the gem to light is brought,
Bo. thy mind's uubouii-Ied measure
May give up kouie pearl of thought.
Use the pec. the day's d 'parted
When the sword, alone held sway,
Wie'ded by ihe lion. hearted.
Strong in battle! where are they?
Ail unknown the deeds of glory
Done of old by mighty men,
Save tho few who live in story.
Chronicled by sages pen.
Ue the pen, the tun above us.
By wboe aid the chemist's art
Stamps the fur ins of those who love us,
Showing us their counterpart, '
Cannot hold a bi her power
Than within t.'io pen enshrined.
When with wifdoin for its dower,
It dagi-eutoiyt-'is the mir.d.
Use the pen, hut let it never
blander Truth wi:h death black iitk;
Let it bu thy i t t ndcaror
But to write what good men think;
So thy words and thoughts securing
Iloncct praise from learning's tongue,
May, in line, be as enduring
Aa the strains which Homer eung.
From the Germantvwn Telegraph.
WHO IS THAT VOL AG MAN ASHAMED
OF THE FLOW ?
We sometimes hear of young men too
proud to be seen laboring in the fields;
indeed we are not sure that we have nut
seen such. ISow, nothing can justify any
man iu eschewing mauuel laoor on his
farm; unless it be that he can be otherwise
employed in the superintendence and di
rection of the labor of others, or that easy
circumstances allow hiiu to indulge his
leisure in the luxury of acquiring knowl
edge by conversing with men of superior
minds, person illy or fiora the wiiungs.
Do men ol narrow miuds, who despise
labor, remember that in Koiue, after the
expulsion of Hie Kings, seren acres were
allowed to each citizen ? Curius Denta
tus, Fabricus, Regulus, and others distin
guished as the most deserving among the
Romans, had no larger estates. Cincin
natus, according to some authorities, had
only four acres. On these limited spaces,
they dwelt and cultivated them with their
own hands, lhr.il he tries it, no one
knows on how little land all the essential l
comforts of life ui3v be produced.
was literally from the piow that Cin
cinnatus was summoned to be Dictator;
and the Samnian Ambassadors, when they
went to Cerius Dentatus to sue for peace,
found him on his farm, cooking his repast i
of vegetables ia an earthen dish. To pur
chase easy terms they offered him vessels
of gold, but l ia ii obi e Roman disdainfully
refused their offer. "I prefer," says he,
"my earthen pots lo your vases of gold. 1
have uo desire for wealth, and am satisfied
to live in poverty, and rule over the rich J
Caa any one, pray, fell us where any of
the old Dentatus s:ocii can yet be found
Farmers of the United States! You.
for whom alone we care and labor if you
can find the least sprinkle of that blood,
seize on it as you would on a scion of the
choicest fruit about to become extinct, and
try to breed back on it, until we can get a
stock of honest men for public functiona
ries of ev ery sort, whose study shall be to
diffusa knowledge, to inculcate economy,
and to promote peace, and such ilUtribu
tion of the public moneys collected from
the landed districts, as shall enlighten and
purify '.he mass of the culliialors of the
soil uniil the wisdom and forecast of the
consistency shall be reikcted.bv all our
puMic men and public bodies.
If ever
the old
you can get, ::r instance, one of
Washington stock one who will tolerate
freedom of thought and of speech, and go
exclusively for the Constitution and the
puhlic good, persuade him to hold on uniil
his new and salutary system of manage
ment of the. public farm shall be thorough
ly developed and well rooted until an
odious system called the 4,spoiIs system,"
worse than the Canada thistle, shall be
extirpated from tho whole earth, and the
anxieties of all our young farmers shall
be withdrawn from the tree of patronage
and the fruit office! which turneth to ashes
in the mouth, and their contemplations be
turned on their own conditions, business,
and rights, and to the means ol their vin
dication and improvement.
In this exhortation, there is no narrow
sjggeclion or spirit of party. -It is intended
-nj brli'-vrd t-j Uivr Uit b;trir:" on
Ithe prosperity of practical agriculture; for,
depend on it, as respects the ultimate wel
fare and safety of your pursuit, they rest,
as does public virtue itself, upon knowl
edge. How many idle young men have
we, standing where idleness ever does, on
the brink of ruin, and who could get ten
times as much land as satisfied a Cincin
natus or a Dentatus, who are yet ashamed
to labor, but not ashamed to enroll their
r.ames on the list of the most abject of all
slaves slaves, whose daily bread depends
on the capricious breath of arbitrary
power.
Good-breeding is a guard upon the
tongue; the misfortune is, that we put it
on and off with our fine clothes and visiv
ting faces, and do not wear it where it
wanted at home!
