Troy, Aug. 22.
I send you further particulars of the ap
palling and bloody tragedy which came to
light yesterday morning, at tlie St. Lrml
Hotel. About 10 o'clock this forenoon,
Mr. R. B. M'Donald, the proprietor of
the hotel, thir.kirir there was somet'iliw
wrong in the non-anueararu'e of a man left Independence ahout
and woman who had stopped as travelers, ur aanta. re, aim mat s.ie
went up to their room and knocked at the
door, but receiving no answer he opened
a small window over the door, when a
horrid spectacle was presented. Both man
sad woman were dead. The bodies, the
clothes and the bed were covered with
blood, and the throat of both were cut
sad horribly mutilated.
The man and woman came to the hotel
about 4 o'clock on Monday mdrning.
From facts which were brought out, it
was found that the man's name was Wm.
A. Caldwell, a resident of Whitehall,
where he has a father living. He was
from twenty-six to thirty years of age,
"nd had returned from sea about three or
fout months since. He was well dressed
ac4 of respectable appearance. The wo
man's maiden name was Louisa C. Van
Winkle, but it is believed she was of late
known by the nane of Knapp. She was
between 25 and 30 years old, and very
'bsauUful. She was dressed in deep
mourning, and is stated to be from Brook-
The Coroner of Troy beiff cut of the! SlaTC Slealins
city, Coroner Cogswall, of Lansingburg,
was sent for to hold an inquest. The
Jury, after hearing the facts in the case,
returned the following verdict:
That the woman came to her death by
having her throat cut from ear to ear by
the hands of William A. Caldwell, on the
evening of Tuesday, and that Caldwell
came to his death by his own hands-

man, who was made a prisoner, and in-'
tcrmarried among them.
Espaniolo states that in ccr.vers-:.
with the woman, who, he says, ss v.vry
f ur, ami of comely appearance, lie learned
that she is tin; sister of Li-i:t. Love rr
L-nett. who commanded a ir-tin which
three years ago,
was in compa
ny with the parly when it was attacked
by the Camanches, -end that her brother
was badly wounded, a large number of
the men -were killed, and she, with a
number of men, were carried off prisoners
by the Indians. She states that her hus
band and the men treat her very well, but
the 'women are very cruel, and heap many
indignities upon her. She is anxious to
leave them, and says that four or five
good riding horses will procure her ran
som; but at the same time she requested
Espaniolo to say she expressed a perfect
contentmeut among the Indians.
Espaniolo says he can identify the
band of whom this lady is a prisoner, and
that at the next trip, if he can get the hor
ses for that purpose, he will rescue her
from ihe wretched and miserable life she
is now living.
We hope the press will-give this notice
as wide a circulation as possible, that the
relatives of this unfortunate lady may
adopt some steps to ransom her.

been engaged for the last several years n
