    BEAR ON.
BY A. M. EDMOXD.
Bear on! What though life's tido may la
A current strong opposing thee,
And thou hut but a slender sail
To spread brtore the adverse gale;
When trials lasb the waves to foam.
And thou art far from friend ana homo.
Yield not lb spirit in despair,
But rnanfullv the billows dare;
High o'er the waters, wild and cold,
Fix thou the steadfast eye and bald
. Bear on, bear bravely oa!
Bear on! The tvorld may jeer and scoff,
And chosen friends may cast thee off;
Stay not to weep the br iltle chain ,
One stormy wind could break in twain.
If thou hast found that heart untrue,
Which was thy hope, thy idol too,
Sink not in sonow's depths profound,
Despair will never heal the wound.
Give to the past no vain regret,
The future lies before thee yet.
Bear on, bear bravely on !
Bear on! Dost thy repining eye
Bee worthless men exalted high.
While modest merit sinks forlorn
In cold neglect and cruel scorn 7
O, rever from thy tempted hert
Let thino integrity depart.
When disappointment fills thy cap,
Undaunted, nobly drink it up;
Truth will prevail and justice show
Her tardy honots cure, but slow.
Bear on, boar bravely on!
Bear on! Our life is not drea;n.
Though often such its mazes seem;
We were not born to live of case,
Ourselves alone to aid and r!oasc;
To each a daily task is given,
A labor which shall fit tor heaven;
When duty calls kt lovo grow waim,
Amid the sunshine and the storm.
With Faith, life's trials boldly breast,
And come a conqueror ta thy rest.
Bear on, boar bravely on!
THE SONG OF STEAM.
BY GEO. W. CUTTER
When I saw an army upon the land,
A navy upon the seas,
Creeping along a snail like band,
Or wai'.ing the wayward bteeze;
When I saw the peasant faintly reel.
At the toil which he faintly bore.
As hi turned away at the tardy wheel,
Or tugged at the weary oar.
When I measured the panting courser's cpeeJ
The flight of tho carrier dove,
As they bore the Ijw a King decreed,
Or the lines of impatient love;
I could but think how the world weald feej
As they were outstripped afar,
When I should be bound to the rushing keel.
Or chained to the flying car!
Ha! ha! ha! They found me st last.
They invited mo lorth at length, blast
And I rushed to my throne with a thunder
And laughed in my imn strength!
Oh! then you saw a wondrous change
On the earth and ocean wide;
Where now my fiery armies range;
No; wait for wii.d or tide.
Hurrah! hurrah! the waters o'er
The mountains steep decline;
Time space have yielded to my power
The world the world is mine!
The giant steam of the queenly weit,
Aud the orient floods divine.
The ocean pales where'er I sweep,
To hear ray strength rejoice,
And monsters of tho briny deep
Cower trembling at my voice.
I carry the wealth and the lor J of oarlh,
The thoughts of tho god. like mind,
The wind lags after try goii;g forth,
Tho lightning is left behind.
In ihe darksome depths of tho fiithomlef s
fly tireless arm dolh play, mine.
Where the rocks no'cr raw the 6un declin?,
Or the da wn of the glerioue day;
I bring earth's glittering jewels up,
From the hidden case below,
And I mako the fountain's granite cup,
With a crystal gash o'erflor.
I blow the bellows, I forge the steel,
In all the shops of trade;
I hammer the ore, and I turn the wheel.
Where my arms of strength are mado;
I manage the furnace, the mill, tho mint,
I carry, I spin, I weave.
And all my doinga I put in print
On every main and cvs.
I've no muscle to weary , no breast to decay,
JCo bones to be "laid on the shelf,"
And soon I intend 3'ou may "go and play"
While I manage the world rayse.'C
But harness mo down with your iron bands,
Be sure of your curb an d rein,
For I scorn the strength of your puny bands
As the tempest scorns the chain.
Fishar, the celebrated performer on the
oboe, was invited bv Lord K-Iley to sup
with him. In tho courso of the evening,
his lordhhip hinted th$t he hoped he had
troueht his obce with him. My lord,"
said Firht-r, 'my cbre r.ri?r eatssnppr.'
Dress and Merit. Girard, the famous
French painter, when very young, was
the bearer of a letter of introduction to
Lanjunais, then of the Council of Napo
leon. The young painter was shabbily
attired, and his reception was extremely
cold; but Lanjunais discovered in him such
striking proofs of talent, good sense, and
amiability, that, on Girard "s rising "to take
leave, he rose too, and accompanied his
visitor to the ante-chamber. The change
was so striking, that Girard could not
avoid an expression of surpriso. 'My
young friend,' said Lanjunais, anticipa
ting the inquiry , "we receive and utikuwn
person according to his dress; we take
leave of him according to his merit."
An exchange paper tells the following
racy yarn: "At Morrow, a green-'ooking
man got upon the cars, tied a large cur
dosr he had with him to the irnn stanchion
of the hindmoftcar, and del.berately took
his seat among the ladies. Away bounded
the iron horse with his usual speed, to
the no small wonderment of the country
man, who had never ridden so fast before
Arriving at lister's ('rossinirs, he walk
ed back to take a look at his favorite ant
maS, and his surprise may be imagined,
when he found only the head of the dog
attached to the rope with which he had
fastened him. After beingr perfectly sat
isfied that the dog was dead, he mereJy
uttered, '"Well, this is the enly critter
that could teat that dog runnin'!"
