Wo have been requested to state that Jacob

uhampion of Temperance, will deliver a lee

day tbe Cth of July next. The advocates nt
Temperance throughout tho county, and all

'XT We have been so much occupied by bu.
mess before the Court this week, that we have
been unable to pay that attention to our paper
which we otherwise would have done.
XT Tha'Hon. Job Mann will please except
our thinks for a most valuable work on Cali
fornia. Onr Ticket.
This being Court week, we have had an op
portunity of conversing with a large number
of democrat throughout the county, and we
ere happy to be able to sav that wc did not se
a single Individual who was dissatisfied with
. tho nominations made by tho 'ate democratic
County Convention. Indeed, since we became
a resident of the county, we never saw a tick.
et nominated that gave more general satisfac
tion, or one that was more certain of root iving
the united support of the whole party. As we
have the numerical strength in our county, a
eoneert of feeling and action on the part of the
friends of democracy is al! that is required to
render ua successful on all occasions.
Our Court.
Quite a considerable number of peoplo arc in
town, in attendance on Court, and the amount
of businet before hie Honor Judge Taylor is
unusually larsre. The number of Common
wealth cascc especially exceed any former term
for several years. We may perhaps in our
uext give a brief statement of the most impoi.
tnt eaaea and how they were disposed of, fr
the information of such of our friends as were
not in attendance on Court.
Cholera in St. Louis-
The Cholera is largely on the increase in
the west, and its ravages among the inhabi.
tants of the cities and towns along the rivers
aie terrible. St. Louis, especially, is afilicled
awfully by this horrible malady, as wil1 be seen
by the following from the St. Louis Union of
lh23dult.
The city of St. Louis is at the present time
more sickly than it has. ever been in its prcvi.
ous history. Nor is thero any reason to b'j
liovethat tho fearful epidemic-is about to abate
Thursday, as will bo seen by our list of inter
ments, eighty. fivo burials, from ten cemeteries
of. the city, are reported, from cholera alone:
The other two cemeteries would swell tho list
doubtless, to over one hundred, if they had re
ported. The bills of mortality for this week,
fear,- will exceed seven hundred; a most
fearful number in a population of about 05,000
wis.
It may -well be asked in this melancholy slate
of thing, vhat can be done to stop the rava.
f es of this fell destroyer? Alas! the wisest
cannot answer our question, for of lato, all
precautions in many eases have proved unavail
ing. The wealthy, mrrounded by all the com.
forte of life, have fallen as 6udden victims to
its pestilential breath as the poorest and hum.
blest wretch tha lacks all semblance of these
comforts. The inscrutable will and wisdom of
Providence alone can arrest it, and to Him it
is beet for all of us to bow with humble rc?ig-tiition.
The Central Railroad. . j
We Icarn from our exchanges that this road
will be opened as far a Millerstown by the
15th inst., and t Lewistown by the 1st of
August next. Wc also understand that Messrs
Colder, Snodgrass !c Co., in'eud placing a line
of st ijre coaches between Ilo'lulaysburg and
Ijewistown on the opening of the Road to the
latter place, and nUo another line from Ilolli
dayajurg to Fjitsburg. As the line of coaches
that are now running through this place ap.
pears to be very badly managed, we feel confi
dent that this intelligence will be gratifying
news to the people in this section of country
besides it will give a little more life to the pre
sent dull condiiion of thing.

The Whig Ticket.
The Convention of the "great and universal
; whijr party r which met in this place on Tucs
day last succeeded in nominating the following
ticket. - - . - .
Assembly.-John Fettlon, ?' ..-
j Sheriff". Robert Gageby. V '
Treasurer. Robert Davis.
Commissioner. Peter I'rbju.
Auditor Jacob V. Si ck.
These nominations did not appear to give
very general satisfaction, a several angry dis
cosfiom among the faithful, after the Conven
tion adjourned, would seem to testify. We
would advise them to keep cool, aa they may
rest assuree that there are plenty others besides
themselves who will vote against the whig
ticket;

The Democratic State Convention to place in
nomination a candidalefor Canal Commission
er, assembled in Pitisburg on yesterday. We
did hope that we tfould have been enabled this
morning to give our reader the name of the
gentleman who has been selected ' as standard
bearer of the glorious democratic party in thi
approaching contest, but we have been disap
pointed. No intelligence whatever was resoiv.
ed at tne time of out going to press. We feel
conudent, however, thit the Convention will
nominate a man around whom the whole party
throughout will rally with enthusiasm.
