subject; i Death .. (said the Rev. Mr.
Beeche* eel With you the natural re
pugnano of a topic so disagreeable.
Mon do not like to think of anything so
oppressive, and it \ may , ha thought
strange that a proper consideration of
what is so considered, will have a tend
ency to oniich life, and make it more
full and complete. • The transmutation
of the features , the slow decay, is trouble
to contemplate, to that to me It is disa-,
greetible to bane - Upon the dead. It is

Irhon dying. In olden times they used
to have a skeleton hung before them, to
reinind them of death, to rebuke. pride f
and lead men to forget worldliness. I
don't wonder the young turn away from
sucha Scene as that: These things aro
unwholesome, they Pollute the sweet
'breath of 'hope. Dying is Changing
form, changing position. Passing out
from a lower to a higher position. It is
the spreading of the wings which had
been unfolded before. It is crowning
men, giving them the scoptro. It is not
conib, and decaying bones wo are to
think of. There are men who believe
they are made bettor by spending whole
days in Sepulchres. Yes ! if worms are
men'a best priests ; when I think Of
death I think of immortality: I think I
am here for a time of grpwtb 4 and• when
I am called away I enter into another
state of„beihg. So_ lot mo take account
with ixiscTlf how my work la being done.
What is'done and what is iieglectell. A
wise contemplation of our stay here will
tend to : make a than more faithful in the
performance of his duties. Wo are not
mere atoms floating in the air. Wo aro
hero for some purpose. And we know
that we are in a universe placed hero by
God. to perfect ourselves. When men
go abroad to visit Franco and England,
do you suppdso because they spend but
.... z it short time in' each city that it takes
away. their interest from that blty7 And
because wo aro to stay hero but a short
Vme, is• that any reason why wo should.
take no interest iu our stay hero? It
rathei• intensifies the interest, or should
do so. Mon who have no thought of
dying, let their affairs go loosely. In
youth, in middle life, and oven In old
ago, men have the opinion that they wilt
never die. And so we train ourselves
that them is endless time for us to pro-
pare ourselves, so that when men come
to die they aro seldom prepared, oven in
thole—economical affairs, toleave. Just
think what is the conditioti of your debts
If you should die '? ' What fern your plans?
A CALIFORNIAN'S ESTIMATE OF THIS
VALUE OF A CHLIROII:—In travelling
through Southern California, nothing
which Mr. Charles Nordotl has noticed
has surprised him moro than to find
many churches and, tiohool.kouses. In
one town, Hnvilah, he found no church,
kind its absence was thus accounbid for
by one of the leading'citizens,-a judge,
of • course—of that place : "We did
make an effort to get up a church, but
somehow it did not succeed. My wife
and I talked it over; 'preferred an
Episcopal church, atill I called a meet
ing of the most respectable men of that
place to choose a vestry.- They voted
mo into the Chair, and I nominated Mr.
Johnson for vestryman. Mr. Johnson
declined to serve ; he modestly said he
thought himself not fit for the office ; he
liked . an occasional game of draw poker.
he said ; ho was given to some other
vvorldliamusoments, like dancing when
there wits a fiddle anywhere around ; -ho
couldn't resist a horse-race, and untie:-
'tunately all tho horse-racing in Havilah
took place on Sunday, which was sure
to interfere with his duties as vestry.
man, and so ho would rather not serve.
I told„hiM," continued the Judge, 'that
men were not expected to he absolutely
perfect in those days ; that the chair it
self was fond of an occasional game of
poker, afid that the office of vestryman
was, in the judgment of the chair, purely'
ministerial; but Somehotv he did not
see it in that light ; be is a modest um;
and he wouldn't servo. , When he
backed out everybody else did too, and
so-this effort of ours to got n-p a church
fell through. I've always been very
sorry for it," added . the judge, frankly,
"for I think a church airlxcellent thing
to have."

Tex .T 'ROUBLES OF A BAGCIAGE; SMANII
Eli.—The Missouri - Democrat of July 11,
says: " During the' time that Robin
soil's Circus was on tha line of the Mis
souvi Pacific Railroad, the Jim Fisk side
shOw—cansisting of wax figures of Fisk,
Mansfield, Stokes, and a largo anaconda
—started from Leavenworth to join the
circus near St. Louis'. The canvass and.
Wax figures wore stowed in a baggage
car, filling the front end and leaving only
ono door for entrance to the corrahes.
The baggage man, being of an inquiring
mind and thinking lie would take a free
peep at the show, just to see what Fisk
and the Mansfield locked like, opened
the door and stood among the waxen
figures of the illustrious trio. While he
=was admiring oi,i3 graceful contour of
Mansfield's bust, whal t was his horror to
seethe inonstm anaconda raise his head
and begin slowly to crawl out of the box.
The serpent's eyes were upon Lim, and..
hie forki.ckward and
forwiird like a weavers nli tle. Hav
ing heard of the power of the anaconda
in squeezing its victims to death in its
terrible folds, our trunk-sinashor at once
realized the danger of his situation. His
mind reverted with lightning rapidity to
the events of his life, and visions of
wrecked kiiteategas, frail valises' and
flimsy carpet bags, arose in 0 mountain
of j udgmont before him. Ho would have
given his right hand for a stout, steel
plated trunk to crawl into, but no spell
thing was at hand. After protruding
about half his borfid lon th, the snake
paused and turned his ey'V.s. in another
direction. The baggage-man was not
slow in availing himself of• this oppor
tunity of making his escape. Quickly,
and with..the stealth of a ferret, lie
crawled suer pilott,of boxes, gained the'
door, and made 44,..biti retreat to the
coach. There 110trcilind the showmen,
and on informing them that ;the 'Snake
was endeavoring to OtiCayal c iAlOY went

again to pry into, the boxes of showmen
