QUESTIONS FOR VOTERS TO

Who should -be cliCted to our county

Which of the two dads nominated
should receive tho suppOrt of our voters?
Who would best care for the interests of
our tarspaycrs and see that their contribu

These aro questions of primp imp'ort

questions which affect our poOlcots—
questions which -refei to the intelligence,

A DANGEROUS WITNESS t
Mr. Forney's favorite witness, in his
crusade against the Republican candi
date for Governor, is Dr. Paine. By'
him, ho undertakes:to prove all manner
of 'malfeasance and corruption, and
without his valuable aid, even Die impu-
dent ingenuity of the Pais would be at
a loss to invent slltudors to hurl at th&
head of the 'man whom it so meently de-
Oared to be, not only a gallant soldier,
but also a faithful official. I We propose
to give Mr. Forney the full benefit of his
chosen witness, and hope, In advance,
that he will inffice the most of him.
-
We have morn than once intimated
our belief that the now celebrated Six
Thousand Dollars divided by' John AV.
and D. Carpenter F9rnoy, were only a'
small -portion of ,th ri ii Evans dividend.
inousand dr
liars of that SUM
have neon traced to the;;;i6;rZfnal pocket
of the chief maligner oT General Hart
ranft; and it has seemed incredible that
he should halo put-Evans in the way of
a throe hundred thousand dollar. 4 Opera
tion for the pitiful commission of-two
thirds of one per cent.
We call Dr. Paine to the 'stand and
we offer him. -once more, the poltor, as
Mr.•flagert did in the 'Twitched case.
The difference is that both ends of it are
DOW hot, and that the " centre of per
cussion" can .be far morn easily deter
mined, than when the Dean of the Bogus:.
Diploma College gave his immortal.
lecture on that...subject before,tlie Twjt
chell jury. •
We do not know whether Dr. Pain's'
swears or affirms. Wo presume that, as
a practice, he swears. indeed, he swore
a little, just a little„litta

which we now propose to pulffimh. What

This is exactly what Mr. Forney'S
favorite witness said to at least- two
competent and thoroughly reliable
nesses. And upon being asked why the
money ihrlf was not paid to him, Mr.,
Forney's favorite witness promptly 're
plied that it was thought desirable that
Mr. Forney should bo able to say, if,
interrogated, that ho " had never boon a
dollar of the Evans money."
This is Dr. Paino's testimony, and we
aro prepared to prove, before any proper
tribunal, that this is precisely what he
said concerning the. disposition o . l* this
part of the Evans plunder. If it is false
testimony, than Dr. Paine has proved
himself a very had - witness for Mr.
Forney, and ho 'ought to donounto hihu

that lie never had any such mortgage
