In last week's issue of our town papers,
there , was an announcement that the
horns intended for the new band would
be delivered uu Thursday evening by the
"Singer Cornet Band, of Mechanics
b mg." The band, although being cont
pencil to' "Mitke,,eonsiclerable change in
their programme on account of the
weather, were promptly oif hand, and
after taking supper at the "Bentz
House," treated our citizens to a general
serenade. It was , the intention of the
visiting gentlemen (had the weather been
favorable,) to have made the entire tour
of our town in,.their chariot, and thus
give, our citizena <4//, , an,.,opyarlitnitx ; ,,of
judging.of the merits of the instruments,
the ability of the Band to make good
music being already well known in our
community. When wo take the state
of the' weatlMr into' consideration, we
cannot feel too grateful to the gentlemen
for the amount of music they discoursed,.

week a telegram was received by Mr.
Samuel Shelley, of this borough, stating
that his brother Jesse D. Shalley, had
met with a serious accident while en
gaged in repairs oil thes', (timberland
Valley Railroad . bridge. Thu :following
Are the particulars of the sad nif,tfr : On
the morning in quoStidn, the deceased,
foreman of a force of carpenters, the
employ of Mr. 'Bell bridge conti,lintor,
was engaged in adjusting trestle Work in,
the water from the k2umberland shore,
when a plank fifteen feet long,: ton Inches
thick and fourteen inches in width, slip
ped from the hands of a number 'of car
penters on the 'bridge, and struck him
with violent force on the side of the head.
The piece of lumber fell from a height of
nbelnothirty 'foot;' hnd indicted n IlVe
inch gash one way 'and traverse cut'
two and a half inches in length. The
scalp Was laid open, but the plank glanc
ing oft', the skull escaped fracture.
The injured man was - immediately con
veyed to Wilder's' hotel, at Bridgeport,

•unconscious condition until about four
O'cicick the following morning, when
death put amend to his sufferings,
The remains wore brought, to this
place on Friday teeming, and e:Mveyed
to the residence of his mother on West

year saw fit to abandon it, and adopt in its
stead conventions composeyi of delegates
front each voting district, which,were to
sit with (ken doors and in which even the
ballot was to be discarded, forfear some
gentleman might be defrauded of his
rights. In pursuance, therefore, of the
new arrangement tho uutorrified chose
their delegates last Saturday, who re
ported in duo time and in good condi
tiOn on Monday, and performed tbcir
duties as after the following fashion..
At 11:30 a. m., the Convention met,
and was called to order by Mr. Wagner,
the Chairman of the last County Com
mittee, who was immediately chosen
permanent Chairman of the Convention.
Messrs. Henry, Klink and Graham,
were appointed Secretaries, and the
machine.was theU in order to run. The
first tiling done was the inspection
of the credentials, which were all in
good shako,- except those from Hope
well, against which a strong protest was
submitted on the ground of fraud, cheat
ing and Other similar irregularities ;
but the protest was tabled, and the
delegates holding the paper wore
admitted. The now and somewhat in
complete :township of Cooke was also
represented by two delegates, who wore
admitted to the convention.

Haideinan, and declaring him the choice
of this county for renomination. This
brought out opposition' at ono° in the
shape of an amendment declaring Perry
county entitled to the nomination, and
empowering Mr. Magee to select his own
conferees. This went through on a call
of the yeas and nays by a vote of '2,9 to
25, mill consequently Mr. Haldeman was
nhelvcd in the house of his friends.. This
