A political campaign : always brings — ialitb lot of disgusting absurdities. It is necessary to invent catchwords and phrases for the purpose of tickling the ears of those who are either weak in the lrfaith, or are soured by some personal disappointment. Until last year the Democracy appealed to the prejudices t'tif their followers, by thu cry of White man's government, nigger equality,v nigger supremacy, conflict of races and many other similar expressions. During the war we were regaled 'with the cry ',him Constitution as it is and the Union as it was," and favored with many terrible denunciations of the Admiuistration, because it failed to give the same con struction to.the -Constitution, in the favor of armed rebels, that was given to peace ful and law abiding citizens. The present campaign brings us the • somewhat poetic but rather meaning lees expressions, " Let us clasp hands over the bloody chasm." 8y..a1l means, but has not this been done long since ? war without the semblance of cause or excuse, is thrust upon the country through the treason of the mad partisans of slavery. It is fought out with the utmost stubbornness and pertinacity. Until the last State is overrun and the last army is forced to surrender as prisoners of war, we hoar no sound of peace. Tens of thousands of the 4 bravest men of the loyal North are murdered by the hands of treason. DSDEI of thousands of shattered and broken cripples carry• on their persons the scars • -and wounds of this most wicked conflict. Prison pens where captives were denied not only food and raiment, but in which they were crowded to suffocation, with out -shelter from storm and blistering sun, aro still -fresh in the minds of 'all who care to remember. Schemes to burn our great cities, and to spread dis ease and pestilence through the loyal North, are of the ordinary devices of our cowardly foes. And, finally, as the rebel lion fell to ruin, its mad partisan murdered the twice-chosen Chief of the Republic. Now it strikes us that for milder sins than the least of these, traitors have in all ages felt some punishinent. How hero? Has a single traitor been ,punished for a day? Have the rebels who have heaped a mountain of debt on the nation, been visited by confisca tion of propetty ? For a few short years some of those whose crimes had spc,ial aggravation were disfranchised, but now 'there is scarcely a living rebel who has not as easy a road to the offices and honors' of the country, as the bravest Union soldier in the land. Is this not "clasping hands over the bloody chasm" with suffieient friendliness ? What more Would our opponents have us do? Must we assume rebel debts, pay pensions to rebel soldiers, and reimburse disloyal men for the loss of slaves, on whose stolen labor they had grown rich?. We object to any such indiscriminate and ex pensive clasping as this. .By all means let the memories of the past be buried. Let no vengeful feelings ever again rise between -any setitions of the land. But never forget that they who have forgiven .the most, are .those who can best be trusted to complete any forgiveness which, may now remain. The Republi can party has skint to the world a magnanimitynever beforo witnessed. It has extended the hand of union and peace over the bloody chasm, which Democracy - created, and into which it east the life . and treasure of the nation. Jonas. BLACK 'who, . while he was in Buchanan's cabinet was a target for Hoy aCe Greeley's best shots, has come out in a letter supporting that gentleman for the residency. This is all right, and we. rejoice at'tho magnanimity displayed by the Judge in supporting' an old enemy and thus doing his share to clasp hands over the bloody chasm. There is :one thing, however, which strikes us as some what peculiar in Judge Black's course. Just after the Cincinnati convention, in speaking of the nominee of that conven tion whom he now suppoits;he said "Had you raked this world and the two adjacent, you could not have found a' more unfit man for thG Pyosidency." Now, the Judge, be it remambered, be longs to that antiquated class of states men, who aiWitnown to he as tficapable of telling a ]lo as was George Washing ton in the days of his cherry' ttee, ohop ping, and who never resort totho' com mon tricks of modern politicians, llcw is it then, that he now tiltida himself . . . oapportiag MO " most unfit mail for ilia .., Presittency,", who, In 11 . 4(1410i], is sus acted of ibityitig ' been air. rybo)itionlat !luring most of litii life. It would scent front the statements of their journals, that so wise, honest and patriotic a man as Senator Bucka lew, never before graced the ticket of a political party. It is gravely asserted that he .is the . personification of political wisdom and statesmanship that he, is entirely above the dicta+. tion or control of either poisons ur parties, and that -his services during his public career have been of such ines timable value and importance' that he has a claim upon the suffrages of hide- On pendent and honest voters, such as no other camel:date ever possmssed. These, gentlemen were all before the people 'of Uctinsylvania, foi their suf frages for the same position which Mr. uckalow Kooks ; they were all defeatnd, and it would requii.o'Nery great assur duce on the part of their partizanu to claim that thu affairs of jhe State have suffered any detriment by reason of the choice of their worthy and able Bcpubli- can opponents. Mr.—Buckalow has been in the State and National Senate for many years. His services cover the most important era in Pit histmy of the cmmtry. It was (luting his •11T1.11* that the moat radical changes in fat or of bniveraal right and universal li_bcrty were ocean pli shed. All these Mr i Mckalow resisted with his entire strength, always placing his action on high constitutional and moral grounds, which strange tip say during all that time, were the exact dogmas which the manage' qof his to annellllCed as Ajle pla - f liuckalow places pint'orits which ad mits the 'v idiiim,,justiee and necessity of all ho opposed during his political life. There is no escape fyom the conclusion that he Was either short sighted and time serving before, or that be is weak and cowardly .now. The work of Re publicanism was either right or wrong at the first, and is either right or wrong at present. If right at the first, Mr. fluelta low should have seen it and supported it. If it was wrong then success has not made it right now Yet Mr. Buckalow and his party have grounded their arms; given up their opposition to the great leading features of Republicanism, and have proclaimed their acceptance of the work which their opponents have accom plished. In this, he and thdy have shown themselves to be merely politi cians who are content to swallow tiny doctrine which will load them to power and place. Mr. Buekalew's recent action in the Senate of the State, ;Ilse negatives any claim he may make to bo above the rule and control or party politicians. When the seat of Mr. Denim,: was contested, Mr. Buckalew took the ground that the Contest should nut be allowed because it would require the throwing out of entire districts to unseat Lim, In .ono year thereafter in the McClure contest, Mr. l3uckalow awarded McClure his sOet, solely by the throwing out of divisiolle, which disfranchised thousands df voters. As a political trick this is easily under stood. As the act'of a fair-minded states man it cannot be explained. When it is known, howerr, that Buckalow violated his own m4ll-08813(1 view of the law to give McClure a seat in - the Senate, and that McClure violated his pledges by, getting uji a liberal movement in order to iIICITSI.BO Buckalow's chances for holing Governor, the whole transaction is per featly plaint and clear, and shows that the. Democratic nominee for Governor ; knows something of the ways that' are dark and the tricks that are vain.” We ask Republicans to understand these things well before they allow this clamor about eialted statesmanship and im maculateponesty, to take' them into the ranks of the enemy. THE Tribune Is fraught with tharges• of election frauds committed by the Re publicans in North•Carotini. This is chronic complaint with that'paper. ,fts Democratic readers have been familiar ized with it for the last' hirty yofirfl, with this difference, that it was the Demo crats whiiwem the 'guilty piirpetrators. Does the Tribune mean to be understood intimating that• the Democrats have grown virtuous, and are no longer' in clined to the little irregularities whicli they so freely practiced, by its ownshow ing, in former times'?
