    • POLITICAL.
—Baltimore having organized the Ida
Greeley grays," Cincinnati responds by
starting the Nollio Cirai4l3lues."
—lion. J. J. Davis and Governor Ja
cobs, two of the most iniluent.ial Demo
crats of Western , Virginia, ha, publicly
itaounced their opposition io Greeley
and the Baltimore swindle.
—Hon. Win. Dean, Chairman of the
Delaware Democratic State et:o=Mo°
has resigned, because he cannot go Grecs
ley and Broth]. Honest Democrats am
coming to their senses.
• —Two more Democratic papers have
hauled down the mongrel ticket and de
clared for Grant-and - Wilson : Thoßrook
lyn, (N. Y.) Democrat, and the Buffalo,
(isf. Y.) Evening Post, both Democratic
of long standing.
--Reform in' York county has now
fairly opened, the people from, all sec
tions ask only for an opportunity to Vote
for a good County Reform ticket. We
enjoin on all Reform mon to work with
all their Might.
—Grant's• administration has paid 231
millions of the national debt in two years
and a half. This saves the people an
nually fifteen millions of money. The
funding of the now loan so far as it Las
gone makes an additional saving of two
minibus of dollars per annum.
—The Scranton Republican. has deter
mined to give its full support to the Mato
ticket. In a long loader it stattlit its
position, and winds up by advißitg'fatil
Republicans to suppott Hartranft, Allen,
Schofield, Albright, Mercur and the
whole ticket.
—The Democratic organ in Voorhees'
district, the Terre Ilaute Journal, an
irounces that under no circumstances will
it support Greeley. The Seymour (Ind.)
Drylocrat says the same thing. So dons
Voorhees, and so do thousands of Demo
crats in Indiana. And they mean what
they say.
—The Louisvillo Ledger advises its
fribnds not to worry themselves over
what Horace thought of them in the past,
but "when Greeley's record is held up,
to point to the Democratic hook in his
7103 d and then' charge on the enemy."
And should ho ho elected, by that " hook
in his hose," he will be led into every
measure which his Southern masters
devise.
—Tho National Defender—Democratic
—published at Norristown, in its issue
of a late date, refuses to hoist the names
of Greeley and Brown, saying : "The'
same influence that doomed our party to
defeat in 1868, are dominant in 1879, the
only difference being, that in the former
instance; a' Democrat was chosen as the
Presidential candidate, whereas at the
present a life-long, reltntloss maligner
of Democracy, fs foisted upon us."
—The Pittsburg Commercial develops
the fact (of which wowere-before aware)
that Ward H. Lamon's Life of Lincoln,
was really written by Chauncey Black,
son of Judge Jeremiah S. Black, of
Yolk. Lamon supplied a good portion
of the material, while Black worked it
"bp. This accounts for the malignant as
saults on Lincoln's religious and moral
character, running throughout the vol
ume, which has given so much comfort
bu Copperhead editors.
—The Now l'Ork Preemah's Jovnal,
the organ of the Roman Catholics of the
United States, says :
"Horace Greeley must not, and shall
net, ever be President of the United
States. The security of property and of
.persons requires that he shall not be.
We speak from a wide induction of evi
dences, when we say that tens of thous
ands of Democrats, if necessary to pre
vent it, will do what we cannot imagine
ourselves doing—vote for Grant to pre
vent it."
—The following Staten and Territories
hold their elections before November :
North 'Carolina, August 1 ; Kentucky,
Montana and Utah, August ; New
Mexico, September 1 ; California.. Sep
temper 2; Vermont,.September 3; Maine,
—September 9 ; Colorado Territory, Sep
tember 10 ; Dakota, Indiana, lowa, NO
- braska, Ohio, Pennsylvania and District
of Columbia, 'October 8 ; South Carolina,
October 10 : West Virginia, October 21.
Twenty States hold their' State election
at the same .time an their Presidential
which :saves much trouble.
—The characteijof the "Liberal" can-
didate for President is thus tersely des
cribed •by the Atlantic ~Ifont/dy : "Mr.
Greeley is believed' to be capricions,•
conceited, peculiarly open to flattery and
prejudice,. bold in opinion, but-timid in
action, and with that indelhiable :..0111()-
thing in his character which makes it
impossiblenot to laugh at him; lows ler
much we may esteem him. Ile is un
steady, grotesque, obstinate, and ridicul
ous—epithets never yet justly applicable,
all at once, to q President of the United
States."
—The District Republican Convention
met at, Washington, I). C., last week,
and re-nolinated General Chipman as
delog i ate to Congress, and passed reso
lotions endorsing Grant and Wilson and
repudiating Greeley inq, Brown. More
than one-half of the del, were col
ored men, and several made speeches, in
which they condemned the action of
Senator Sunnier in .advising the colored
.people- to- vote for ,GronToSi, arid express
ing the opinion that as be had turned nis
back on his past record, the colored race
'would no longer look to him for Counsel
anti advice.
—"The Democratic party of to-day
is simply the Rebellion seeking to achipre .
its essential purposes w Whin and th.rough
the I.lnion. A victory which does nut
enable it to put its feet on the necks of
the black race seems to the bulk of its
adherents hot: 'worth having. Its hohrt
•is just where it was when it regarded
'slavery and the constitution as two
names for ono thing. It hates the den
orals who led the Union armies tn victory,
and rarely misSes a chanco to disparage
them., It clings to that exaggerated no
, lion - of Statti'rights whidh makes them
the shield, of all manner of wrongs' . aed
abuses."—Horace . Greeley in the New
• York* Tribune, llarclt 23, 1871.
—We have seen Charles R. Buokalew,
the Democratic candidate for Governor
of Pennsylvania, at the moment of the
Republic's greatest peril, stealing across
. the Canadian border to-confor with the
rebel conspirators, who had taken refuge
there to put iu execution their perfectly
devilish plots for burning Northern cities,
stimulating domestic rebellion and plant
' ing pestilence wherever they could' send
• their emissaries. In addition to doing
, -thin, we have to say that CHARLES R.
. BUCKALEW, WHILE OCCUPYING
A SEAT IN THE UNITED STATES
SENATE, COMMUNICATED BY
LETTER „WITH THE LEADERS OF
THE REBELLION IN THE SOUTH,
EXPRESSING SYMPATHY FOR
THEIR CAUSE I Mon of Pennsylva
nia! Shall this man he, your Governor ?
—Pittsburg Commercial.
—What'lforace Greeley knows about
Democracy.as shown in his editorials in
• the Tribune, Makes some people think
ho disgraces himself when ho asks that
party for, their'votes, and takes them for
his associates. For a neat pen and ink
sketch wo commend the following which
,appeared in the Tribune for February 6,
1871 :
" Wo learn with pleasure that quite a
• ' number of the Democratic leaders have

look at, but he has ideas in his head, and
is rather honest for a successful politi

Trader, arid can got some negro as well
• as some white Republican votes ; Whereas
