VICTORY
Misled by the Democratic reports of
their great majorities, and unwilling to
put forth a claim to any thing we would
be forced to give up in the end, we last
week admitted a Republican defeat in
North Carolina. We beg leave to take
it all back. The old North State at the
recent election placed herself in the
Republican column. • Wo elected the
whole Republican State ticket, by a
majority of about 1,500. We have
gained a member of Congress, electing
three Republicans, while we have but
two in the present delegation, and WO
have reduced the Demoera tic majority cm
joint ballet in the Legislature, from 59
to 19, making a gain of forty in that
body. Instead therefore of having
sustained defeat in North Carolina, we
havo won a substantial and important
Victory
When it is
_remembered that at the
last political election, the Democrats
carried the State by over 6,000, and thnt
since then a very largo number of rebels
have been enn'auchised ; that the Demo
cratic party had resolved that the State
should be earl-led at all hazards, and that
all the old influence of the rebel leaders
was wielded in favor of the Democracy,
we can estimate the importance of the
result. It demonstrates the certainty of
a Republican victory in November. It
prbvms that the Republican party, out-
side the little ring of disappointed office
seekers is harmonious, united and power-
fill, and It .shows also, that tho Demo°
racy distracted by the abandonment Of
their old war cries, and disgusted with
the ma made by their leaden., to Gtaley
and Brown, are weak, broken, dispiritid
aria powerless. And noiv let us count on
aßenrcd:victory
THE STATE TREASURY
Ever since the nomination of General
Ilartrauht, the Philadelphia Press has
been . making the most astounding
charges with regard to the management
of the State Treasury. In its editorials
and correspondence it was daily repeated
that tho funds in the Treasury were iu
the hands of the " Cameroilping" - Tor
speculative purposes ; that the vaults of
tho Treasury contained largo amounts of
4worthless, personal paper, representing
cash; that tho securities of the Sinking'
Fund wore used for the benefit of private
. individuals, and that there was a largo
deficiency iu the public funds, which It
was-proposed never-to make good'to the,
State. Of course these preposterous as
cortions were without foundfdion, but
they were relied upon as the chief argu
ments in fay& of turning over to the
Democracy the control of the State.
Wo are glad to lay before our readers,
not only a 6quaro and unequivocal denial
of these charges, butio' be able to show,
by an actual examination of the Treasury
made by two of the most honest
W and capable bank officers in the State,
that the Treasury vaults contain all the
securities of the Sinking Fund, that they
have no worthle - iii paper in thein, Mid
that the money of the Treasury IS hot
need for tho.benofit of a ring, hut is dis
tributed in no lees than mere-mutt of
the banks of the Commonwealth. '
Wo herewith publish - the' letter Of Mr.'
'Mackey, inviting a committee of bank=
ore to examine into the 'condition of the'
Treasury, and the report of tho coniUjit=

We suspect the ahove is pretty good
advice. Mr. Greeley' is not by any means
a good candidate to show around.
i Fveri the adoring Democracy will ad
&it that lie is uncouth in manners, dress
and appearance ; that ho is eccentric,
egotistic and impolitic to the last degree ;
that his personal remarks are nobgener
ally of a mild character, that he swears
like the army in Flanders. But the
Ifrrsld must not expect too much from
the Democratic managers. With Gree

and show himself to disadvantage, and
(I rats Brown's _Yendness for- "buttered

some trouble to, 'keep their candidates
