Democratic party, to a , ' few designing
and truckling Liberal Republicans, hav
ing been ratified and completed by the
action of the so-called Democratic Con
vention held lately at Baltimore, it be-
comes the right, as well as the duty, of
every firm and consistent Democrat to
nudge a careful examination, of the course
pursued by said 'Convention, as Well as'
the political principles that have always
actuated the Presidential candidate, it
is endeavoring. to, force upon the mem
bers of the Democratic party and to
himself tho following questions : has
tho bonvontion been actuated, in its.pro
coedings by those pure and pairiotic
motives that halve over charadtorizcd
the actions of the pomodratic party ?
Has it not been influenced by' motives of
policy and a desire to share the patron
ago and spoils belonging to " the Presi
dential Milos ? Has it not destroyed the
old party landmarks and effaced the true
and tried principles of said Democratic
party What has 'been the political
antecedents of 'Horace Greeley ? Iles ho
ever taken back ono, of his political
heresies or 'ever — expin u ssed a — regret for
having committed or supported them'
Ho has over been foreniost in 'the tanks
of the party that was arrayed against
and opposed to Democratic principles
no mattormhat name it assumed. Ho
has edited the venomous and scurrilous
paper callod "The'Tribune," which pa
per has nover boon surpassed by any
other in the country, in its low, vile,
vulgar, dirty, mean, ungentlemanly,
scurrilous and viqictive atfacics_upon
the private and political characters of
our most illustrious Democrats as well as
in, its slanderous and falserepresenta
tions of the principles.of the Democratic
party. Ile has either originated or
strongly advocated all tho.oppressivo and
tyrannical measures that wore enacted
and carried out during Lincoln's admin
istration. Ile praised, cajoled and flat-
torod Gen. Grant's administration until
he ceased to control the Now Ycirk ap-'
pointments, and has advocated every
moan and obnoxious act passed by Con
gress during said administration. He
was not only One of the earliest, but he
was also ono of thotmdest brawlers in
behalf of Abolitionism, negro suffrage
and negroecmality. Ile not only praised,
but oven gloried iu the course pursued
.Seward in tinkling_a. cor
tain little silver boll, the sound of
which caused the arrest and imprison
anent of some of our purest patriots and
most illustrious Democrats in the dreary
and loathsome cells of our military forts.
Horace Greeley has advocated and used
his influence in support of every ism that
has over cursed this country, and has
never gained an unenviable reputation
for consistency in his advocacy of them.
Ho advocated the right of secession, and
no . man exerted a greater influence or did
more, either by his writings or speeches,
to prepare the minds of the Southern
people to enter into the late rebellion.
Believing that ho was honest in his views
and entertaining the belief that a largo
portion of the people of the North in
dorsed him in them, for at that time he
was an acknowledged leader in the Re
publican party, and they believing that
their course would be sustained by bilp
and a largo number of his followers in
the North inaugurated civil war amongst
us. Scarcely had the tocsin of civil war
sounded before - Horace Greeley swal
lowed his own words, recanted his often
oxprasod views on the subject, and ad
vised that the Government should prb
coed to the most extreme measures in
order to punish tho poor, deluded and
infatuated people; whom he had induced
by his writings and specialig argumentA
to rebel against our Government, an'El
whom lib afterwards denounced as trai
tors of the 'very Worst kind. (" Consis
tency, thou art a jewel.") For over
forty years I have devoted my,time. and
what little influence I possessed in tho
support and maintenance of Democratic
principles as-laid down and interpreted
by such loaders as Jefferson and . Jack
son, and I mm not now, at this late
period of my life, give the lie to my
former profession and stultify myself by
supporting such an obnoxious candidate
as Horace Greeley. Such being the
political record of the Presidential can
didate presented by the Baltimore Con
vention, I can not, conscientiously, sup
port him, nor will I do so under the cir
curnsteinces already enumerated. Party
organizations are nothing but subordi
nate agencies by which a certain number
of persons molc to carry certain principles
into effect. Whotl the subcrdinate
agency ceases to-act for the purpose de
signed and for which it was created, or
is proverted by certain political
trislc
store to a different purpose, such as the
nomination for the Presidential office of
an open, declared and ruthless enemy to
the principles of the party, it ceases to
exist as party authority: : AlleOtice is
only duo to principles and Ilate<4'3 a,cor
tairi individual or a Convention. The
Baltimore Convention by its late action
has virtually disco bored the party, if
it has not destroyed ,--by relinquishing
its functions for the purpose of organiz
ing a new party.under the auspices of a
few unscrupulous and, designing Liberal
Republicans, who do not profess to have
abandoned the principles and measures
of the old Republican party, but having
become disappointed and exonerated,
4 simply because they could no longer con

thus secure for .themselves and friendi
the largest shale of the spoils and plunder
aPportainiug to said offices, have deter
mined to supplant him, and have arrayed
themselves in opposition to his.adiniuis- '
• • tration, for the purpose of placing a man
in his place whom they can more easily
and certainly control. The action of the
Democratio Convention at Baltimore,
therefore, leaves the members of its or
ganization 'profectly free to act as to
each individual seems fit.
The nomination and 'Ondorsetnent of
Greeley relinquishes all persons, honestly
entertaining Democratic principles from
the slightest obligation to vote for Greif
boy and loaves' him free to act in such a
, • way as liis, coicionce and judgment may
dictate. Theso nro my views on thek
great political issues of the day, find as I .
do not wish to be misunderstood, I ask
you to publish them in your paper.
