w AMERICAN TrISItBAq:.(P.;S, cinnyes. unEkr °Ars -The N. Y. Times publishes the follow appropriately on ilia locitirth of July : - ;No annitiorsarica are7sOrich iu Mous cennected with the - very life of the_ nationas Ruiso through which we are pow pas Sing. The Fourth of July, in deed, records the double birth, or rather the birth and salvation of tho• Republic. On this day, iu 18G3, was flashed through the' land—and=the. tidings rang from ocean to ocean like a triumph of victory —the news :of 11ES fall-'of Vicksburg. For some time • prAously, the cause of the Union had looked ominously dark. thO attacks on Clunilbston and at the last and heaviest the Keokuk, one of our much-trusted monitors, hail been sunk. The horrible slaughter of Chaneollorsvillo was fresh in the national memory, and, despite the 'loss of Stone wall Jackson, General Lee promptly utilized his advantage by marching into Maryland and Pennsylvania. Happily, while the Confederate cavalry were trampling the wheat fields of the Middle States, and fears began to bo openly ex pressed of the capture of Philadelphia, General Grant was reviving the hopes ot: the country by his superb campaign in the West. It was now that ho defeated Joo Johnston, at Jackson, and, two days after, PembOrton, at champion Hence, the forced retreat 'of the Con federates and the investment of Vicks burg, the downfall of that redoubtable • fortress and the terrific days of Gettys burg came together ; and these-events really settled tho war, and'decided that the Union was to bo preserved. Of course, there was still hotter work . to do, oven in. that crowded Summer and • Fall. Port Hudson fell on the eighth of July, and then the insurgent plotters in Now York began to See that what they had always laughed at as impossible, was about to happen, and, that the Con trol of the Mississippi 'must soon be wrested from Confederate hands. Now or never they must do their utmost for mischief and bring about an outbreak in New York. Hence the fierce riots of July 13-16, when Mr. Greeley's friend, John 1.7. Andrews, incited the mob to spoliation and murder. There came' more comfort for the South, when --Beauregard -so-successfully---resisted -a now and despeate attack on Fort Sumter, that although the tremendous artillery of the national fleet reduced the work to a heap of ashes, the site itself still defied assault in its ruin, and could not be occupied. -Thus the glory of Vicksburg, and of Gettysburg were des tined to be clouded for the miment, although their substantial pi\ofit was not, and matters looked 'worse still, when a month later Bragg defeated Rosecranz at 'Uhickamauga. In still another month, hoWever,ilGrant in turn defeated Bragg at_Chatttit;moga, and the brilliant fight ing of the: Confederates in the West was over, and the path was ready for Sherman's march to the son. It followe that the personal work of Gen. Grant was likewise over in' that region, and thus whon in the following spring he suenbeded Halleck as Commander-in- Chief,. our victorious leader made his stand in the East, and kept it till the Memorable close. Americans hardly need to be reminded at this time of the splendor of General Grant's achievements, or of the respect and confidence that are Inc. to him because of them. The soldier who led the - national armies from triumph to 'triumph, who never lost a battle, whose indomitable energy and exhaust less patience equalled his courage and his equanimity—and, if last, not least, the soldier who chivalrously threw his shield before prostrate opponents When others sought to persecute them—is not likely to be forgotten tit the season that most reminds his countrymen of his deeds. It is well, notwithstanding, to dwell upon and Lumerato them. Neither he nor his will ever do so, for the modesty of the President is surpassed in degree by no other qualities that have been shown by the soldier. He is as lit-, the likely to blazon his actionii as to au 'swer his detractors. It is- said that no man ever hot& him speak- of the part he ! played iu the war. And yet that part was ono of immeasurable moment to „every American who now lives, and to every American who is yet to lie. llis detractors themselves owe the Get that they are still citizens of a free and united country to General Grant. Succeeding generations will pronounce his name -with gratitude and with reverence for ages after those-defamers have crumbled into dust and aro - fen-gotten. 'Long after the jealousy and the selfishness which beget the acrimonies of the immedinte Present. have passed away, the fame of the great Captain who saved the Republic will live iu the nationatjecords, and his history will typify.that of Washington as regards the chair he now fills, for Washington, like him, was pursued by the sanuttna lignant and envious hostility, and proved in his own' porson that the instincts dl the people aro stronger than_ the tricks of time politicians. NEW DIMIGE42ION. About the Middle of the sixteenth cen tury, one Mention Simonis, with a num ber of, families, emigrated from the Netherlands to Prussia, or,what is now a part of Prussia, for Prussia was then but a small Margravate. • They had a peculiar religious faith, something like that of the Quakers' Frielidg, which among other things forbid them from engaging in - war, of which Charles V. and Philip I.L'had given them by far too much. They 'increased to some hun dreds of families, and in a century and three-quarters, when Frederick the Uroat came to, the throne, they were assigned laws and-special privileges in Last Prus sia. By and 'by, when Frederick found all the resources of his'country taxed to the utmost to carry on the Seven Years'. 'War, lfo balled On those'MOnnonites for aid, and they refused on ' religious grounds. That Icing, without any sense or religion himself, and with a disposi tion leaning strongly toward absolutism, 'waif offended with them, and their privi ,- logos wore withdrawn, among thorn that of owning land. Czarina Catharine, her self a Germanary birth and education, and a Imtheran in religion,, though aim had "United With the Greek Church Mimi her marriage to Peter 111, invited tile nonites into 'Russia, where. elm ofqred thorn ,liberal endowments in 'land and' money to pay for their transportation. The offer was accepted,. and between the years 1700. and 1700, - the whole of them were _quietly settled upon the loiver Dneiper. They were peaceful, intern ' gent, frugal and industrious; Ono of the conditions of their :becoming Russians • was exemption from army duty. - This was confirmed to them by Czar Paul, and' not distiirbed by Alexander I or Nicholas. But now, _after they have accumulated a vast property and reaohed . the number/of 40,009' souls, conics an order from St. Petersburg Wart of the attempt to thoroughly reorganize the Russian mili tary system), that the Mennonites shall lie conscripted and pressed into military service This • they resist, and ask' the Czar's permission to abandon their na tionality and emigrate to the United States. A St. Petersburg corresPond'ent thinkalbe,Goverument Will not yield Its demand upon thorn for military, sbivice, and also bakdotibts about its consenting 'to their emigration, He thinks, however - that If we could scowl theM they would be worth more to our country, on account of their ••Intelligence, industry, temper , anee, morality and thrift than a hundred • thousand from anymther country. • 4.;1 i - /Is 1 1 f 1 4 , 4 1 l i I SPRING OD S..UIIVI:,( e iOODS! .
