Written by Miss Nellie Grant to Queen

LANAEY'S IJOTEL, May, 1872
•
At'v DEAR i f fillY AND QUEEN :—I am
embarrassed at the honor of an ollicial
request, given through a high officer
(your Lord Chamberlain, I think), to be'
presented to your Majesty. 1 should
dearly love to see you, that I might tell
my 'mother and father that I had been
thus hpnorcd. lam but a simple Ameri
camqirl ; that I am the President's
'daughter gives me no claim to your re
cognition as a sovereign. If, with the
,kind lady who is acting as my chaperon,
I might visit on, I should be very gild.
Our secrotall of legation hints at • some
Politicallignificance in this opportunity.
I cannot so interpret it, and would not
wish to be so received, becaua it would
not be right, as I am nothing in Ameri
can politics, and I am sure my father
would hot desire Mo to appear other than
as my simple and very humble self. If,
with this explanation, your Majesty,will
allow mo to visit you, I shall be greatly
honored and be very proud.
I have written this note of my own
notion, and because 1 think it the right
thing to do, I am your Majesty's very
obedient servant and admirer,
NELLIE GRANT.
The reply was equally- refreshing, and .
betrays a spirit which does more honor
to the British Queen than multitudes of
other actions for which hoF itubjectsbave
loudly applauded her.
WINDSOR CASTLE
Miss NELLIE GIIAXT : I have in
structed Lady to convey to you
this note, and we shall recOve you as the
daughter of your honoretparents with
out the intervention of our high officers
of State. I shall accept your visit as an
"American girl," and there shall be no
'other significance ion the fact than your
kindly expressed desire to 'sec - the lady
and not the sovereign. I shall find it
pleasant to forget that I am Queen in re
ceiving you to-morrow afternoon at our
palace of Windsor. VICTORIA.
MEaDows.---The general impression is,
that the most economical plan, of farm
ing, is to get the land in grass, whenever
circumstances will admit, and to raise
the smaller articles for market, in place
of the core als. This will depend null
the facilities of marketing, and the ca
ity of the farmerignndertalte i trot'
sumo business—but under all eire'
stances ou every farm ample provision
should be made Sor a goodly sized bay
crop. If you have a meadow, and it . ' is
found to need renovation, as soon as
your grass crop is secured, barrow it,
and broadcast thereon a compost of 2
bushels bone dust, Ti do' ashes, and 1 of
salt ; let these remain in piles for two or
three weeks before applying it. This
will be found the cheapest and most per
manent,removator you can apply.
Timoth y.—As pure timothy hay al
ways commands a better price and readier
sale in the city' markets, where so large
a portion of it is used by livery stable
keepers, if you have this purpose in view,
seed your land to this crop alone. But
if for your own stock only you wish to
provide, and to secure good pasturage
after.the hay is cat and secured, then a
mixture-of seeds is decidedly preferable,
and the following proportions have been
recommended for an acre : one peck
timothy seed, four pecks .orchard-grass
seed, two do. Kentucky blue-grass, two
do, perrennial rye
. gr.Nito seed, and three
pounds sweet scented vernal grass seed.
This mixture will.selfure excellent crops
of hay, if you have given the land the
1 - praity of manure called for above, and
if t o close is repeated every seeoml year,
yotave a pasture that may be depended
on Bto 10 years at least. The necessity
of supplying the soil with the pabulum
to make good the heavy drains upon it,
by lice withdrawal of the hay and milk
from the farm, must be self-evident., and
the phosphates and ashes aiti the hest
ingredients Ghat can be applied ; indess
this is done, the cultivated grasstif will
11111 out, and inferior varieties take.their
places.—:lmeriran ' , lroner. ,
