FARM 'AO: .HOUSEHOLD OUR FORESTS GREAT WASTE. The annual produots -drawn by_ the People of the linitecl`Statea - from the forests exceed One thousand ;millions of dollars, or eight tunas the interest on the national debt 1 This being thci case, the proscveration of-our forests anct ithe' 'fight ntothcxi* cutting timber is a mat , ter of general internal interest and' of national importance. To save our timber, we must not only out no moro than is necessary, but cut in a proper and economical manner. We_ must stop the merciless waste and primi tive method of chopping with axes, and use saws scientifically. The forests Of Europe aro protected by law, and the removal of timber is caroftilly and coo -1 nomically performed. Not to speak , of \ttre - d crease of moisture and other eliz matio - angel superinduced by remov ing trees, let us look at the matter in a lower asp ct, and compute the profit-and loss. Probably not loss than thirty millions of the people of America, aro warmed by Wood fuel, consuming more than ono - Inwrdreci million cords per annum, ne any ono knowing the prodigal use in our newer timber districts, Will certify. If mills; steamboats, and railroads consume • ono-third as much, reckoning the cost at $4 per cord, wo have four hundred mill ion dollars annually for fuel alone. An equal consumption for fencing, and :r like amount of wooden buildings of all kinds, give the enormous aggregate of ono thousand two hundred millions of - dollars annually, produced by our forests for, consumption. . When , we consider the fencing and farm buildings rqquixod bygur more than four million farmers, if reckoned at ono hundred and fifty dollars, -manually, to each farm, making six hundred millions of dollars, and when the uses of wood are considered few men who have traveled widely, and observed and estimated closely, will deny that more than ono hundred million dollars in products is dprived from our forests annually—five times the value of our largest cotton crop, ten Limes the products of our pig iron, twelve times the production of gold and silver, and four times our wheat crop. Indeed, few single interests ex ceed in value the enormous productions of our forests. How to cut timber with saws scientifi cally may be treated in another article and I will only at this time point out some of the advantages over the waste ful and primitive ax. First, , saw the tree down ; they can be cut closer and with more economy than by chopping, 'and by the use of wedges felled in any desired direction. They can be cut with less labor,''if the operator knows how and uses the most:improved saw. If the tree bo designed for fuel, the saving by sawing in the length desired on the ground in the forest is manifest. If stove wood, the blocks may bo carted without splitting, and when thus sawed, trees that any chopper would leave to rot in the forest, become instantly avail aUle for who does not know that a one foot block may be split easier than ono 'of four fcet, liesides saving the immense waste of a chip a foot in width? From one-third to ono-quarter of the trees in many forests aro what woodmen regard as 'culls,' and tough timber ; this added to the saving of the chips, makes full one-third of the forests available for fuel that otherwise might be wasted and re main an obstruction and incumbrance. Those who, like the writer, arc convers ant with this matter, will appreciate this statement made from actual experience. Saw logs and dimension timber, fenc ing, posts, etc., in the Northern States aro now usually sawed, but in a recent trip through all the Southern States (ex cept Texas) I noticed in mills and luin her yards the ends of saw logs cut with axes ; indeed, it is the method of mills there, but improved methods will soon Prevail everywhere in all/wood cutting. Now lot us consider the time and labor in savring, instead of chopping. To cut one hundred million cords of wood with the ax requires as many days' labor, and as maurdollMs ; if the use of hand-cross cut saws be substituted, and only one half the labor be saved, the fifty hiillions now thrown away are gained, 'besides Iho immense waste of fuel, making in the two items an animal saving of en amount equal to the national debt.— American. Agriculturist. T/TE PARTRIDGE THE FARMER'S FRIEND.—At a mt!oting of horticulturists in Illinois, strong ground was taken against the destruction of these birds. To sho* how useful this bird is, it was stated that a flock of partridges were seen miming along the rows of corn just . sprouting, and seeing them engaged in something which was believed to bO ing up the youitg plants, one of them was killed and its. ".crop" examined, which was found to contain a cutworm, twenty , ono striped bugs, and over one hundred chinch bugs. Another member related that he hail adopted measures to protect the bird, and that they had becoMe so numerous and so tame that hundreds of them, after snow falls, could be seen in his barn yard with his fowls, whore they wore fed. As the result of their presence upon his premises, his wheat Crops were usually abundant, while in many other places, not far off, the chinch bug and other insects had destroyed half the crop. LEATTIER BITS.—The Maine Farnic;* says : "At the North Kennebie Fair we saw a colt exhibited, guided by a bridle in which was a pair of .leather Tho gentleman stated to us that ho liad r used them. for Borne time, and Would have no other kind - , especially in winter. Ho was satisfied' a pair would. last with safety three ye'ars, unless the animal wile; unusually vicious ; and gave thq opinionl of quite eminent horsemen as to their value, who said they would last a year, even with the mostunman ngeable horseS.
