IM El ymmi•i.J A .PTZOD "OR,C lIAIiD IN CITILSTER CO UNIT. , About four miles from Toughkenaman station, Baltimore Central railroad, in Chester county, 'resides . 3oshna A. Jefferis, a thoroughly praCtical and self -.made man: A letter from a prominent Chester county farmer now 'before us calls him " the very best and most successful apple grower we have in .Chester county." The following essay, .3vritten by him, as the results of his observations .and experience for ninny years, was written for the next annual volume of the Report of the East Pewee. Fruit Growers' Society—and as this will notvuppear for many Months, we have been favored with the manuscript, which we take pleasure in: laying before our readers. We have often seen this orchard and partaken of the fruit, and call thus testify from personal observa tion, as to the perfectly healthy condition of the trees, clean • bark, and well balanCed heads, wills freedom from useless twigs and branches. The fruit also were as perfect specimens of the v:uictics as we hat c ever seen anywhere. We do not linow of a better place to deliver a lecture on apple culture, than in our Mend Jutieris's orchard, and we imagine there would be a large audience, .especially if the apples were ripe. He says in his essay, first as regardS •P . LOCATION os QRCIIAD.—.It lies on a hillside ; at an angle of about twenty de grees, Moping to the south and senth li est ; limestone soil of good' average quality—and I have kept up its fertility.' My aiom is, that neither the animal nor vegetable creation can—give profitable returns without they are fed. Those physical laivs which relate to our nour ishilient and health, will just as truly apply to our fruit trees. The organiza tion of the young planted tree should be healthy; raised from seeds of healthy bearing trees, and worked with scions from trees that were known to be healthy and fruitful.. This is aiv-important starting-point when the orchard, is planted. There are two systems which I think are safe to follow as regards culti'vation ; one is to manure on the surface and never plough, (except, that it might bu for the that fog or live years,) and the other is to plotigh every year never omit ling it, ploughing at uniform depth, say of live inehes—acenstorning, the young trees to throw out their roots and grow beneath their depth. One of the import ant points is, in my opinion, wliatever system is t'ultiptcd, to keep to it. I have „pursued the stn face system or manuring may trees for the last litleen years, with very salisfactely results, both in""pleas me 'and profit. Feed your trees regu lady, pot too highly, to cllable them to maintain a healthy, moderate, mate m growth, not exciting by high cultivation, then depress by low ; avoid by all nicans `these extremes—our climate causes vari ations enough. For the thst seven or eight years after I planted my orchard, I kept it ploughed or cultivated every year, feeding it moderpiely on the sur face ; at the „cod of Cho eighth year I - left it lay two years without ; then, in The spiing of the year, commenced ploughing quite early, holding the plow mysclf. I had trees in one part of the orchard planted some y`ears earlier than the others, which had been • bearing abundmitly the year lie ioits to tins 'ploughing, and had made annual shoots of over tare feet in- length. In paSsing mtder rhos,' trees; although I did nut plow more than three - inches deep, it turning nip the soil, it seas literally full of young tibias, ramifying in different directions, m hid] were cut off ; the IT : utt was they Meek ea such a check, followed by a cold, as inter, that, in the ensuing spring a large portion of that thrifty growth was lost, the annual shoots dying Lack sonic two feet. Those trees never recovered —never will—with all the care I can give them. That taughtmo a lesson. I went to feeding on the surface, which I believe to be the true system for pearly all plants. I cart on my orchard the washings of the roads on my own far' all the refuse ashes and thoyie j made iti the neighboring lime bilas in burning limo with wood, also manure from the cattle yards. 1 - Vhenever I have a spare load vflertilizing matter, it goes to the ,u•chard.,(Sineading these materials on :• the ni% . co, (although a green grass ta..l is on the ground,) all over it, the soil is souneilow, 1 can kick it " t un with my foot —the young ru, 4s coming to the, stir face, or nearly so, not being .more than an inch or so under it, for theft' food. There they come in contact with atmos- I,here, light, heat and moisture being The important elements of plant food., Trees treated by me under this system, aro healthy, strong mid vigorous. Al thtugh in a deep valley, liable to late spring frostS, I secure crops of fruit, while my neighbors on more favored localities fail. The question is asked again, wily? , I repeat, it must he, feed iv the tress. ON TRIMMING on PRUNINO TREE:S.-1 Lave found by bitter experience,' that early fliring pruning won't do on my grouml, only on young trees the first four or (I've years of their growth. I would give a•word of caution to all who love to grow nice, thrifty ~apple frees, with no, °annoyed spots on them.' where limbs have been pruned, to aveid pruning from the first of the twelfth until the-middle of 'the fifth or first of the sixth month. It will .do in the spring, as soon as the leaves are fully expanded- and the sap Purified by them, as they will, then heal over without caulscring - -always have done with' me in winter or early spring pruning. Why?-because the sap is Poiscaliqo the tree until it is puyified by the leaves. •WherlY time limb is' pruned in winter' or early spring, when growth commences, tho crude sap where' the, limb was removed from, say ~from aim inch upwards in diameter, comes in cone 'tact 'with the air, and , the leaves not being expanded and performing their healthy functions, the sap pp -that:point becomes vitiated or corrupted, a some what_ diaesised notion takes place, and tub now growth refuses to heal over it— the wound' beeprire'S — dark and decay' followse—the wounds, never heal. Your orchards,.after a time, from' injudicious pruning .and semi-starvation, begin to •decline, and the Oviners wonder what ails their...orchard, with:, dead limbs through the trees ; " they' Want prune rug," they say—and mounting.ile tree, .(axe, perhaps in hand, as I have seen many do, 'not even a pruning•saw,) they . begin to s ent old slash—what for?
