school room, on Friday evening, Decem
ber 29, and was called to order by the
vice president. In the absence of the
recording secretary the corresponding
secretary was, on motion, appointed to
take his place. A. portion of Scripture
was read by Rev. Mr. Quigley. Roll
called 'and- absentees marked. In conse
quence of a number of members being
absent tho recitation in history was, .on
motion, postponed to next, meeting. in
stitute was next favored with a lecture
by Rev. Mr. Quigley, followed with an
eloCutionary exercise by Miss Ste Wart.
After which the following question :‘
"Should there boa law compelling chil
dren to attend the public schools'?" was
debated -by Messrs. Crabs, Ilandshaw
and Quigley on the affirmative, and W.

lin Hall ou Saturday, December 16, 1871,
at-the appointed time and was called to
order by the president. Roll was called.
Messrs: Brenneman, Gutshall, Zeigler
and Griest present. Minutes of last
meeting road and adopted. Mr. Griest
then drilled a class in Orthography, fol
lowed by a live drill in Reading by D.
B. Brenneman. This was followed by an
interesting discussion on the various.
methods of teaching reading to primary
pupils. Mr. Zeigler thin conducted an
exercise in Geography.
On motion the quatitute adjourned to
moot at 6. o'clock p. m. —

Opened with vocal and instrumental
music. W. W. Gutshall then drilled a
class in Mental Arithmetic, followed by
an exercise in Grammar, by Mr. Griest.•
This was, followed by a recitation in

puPlis. On inotlo a vote of thanks was
tendered to the aforesaid pupils for the
praise-worthy manner in which they per
formed the recitation.
The audience wax then favored with
music, which was followed by an essay
by W. W. • Gutshall, (subject,„: we still
live.) Mr. Conner next drilled a class in
Written Arithmetic, which brought forth
au interesting discussion whether' coin
pound proportion should be taught by
rule or reason. The question,' resolved,
that Lafayette merits more 'praise than
Washington, ,was discussed by' Messrs.-
Conner, Brenneman and Godshall on the

IN our last paper, we published au in
teresting letter, in which among other
things, the writer gives ibis early recol
lections of improveinents in Carlisle. It
was handed to tts .by the gentleman to
whom it was written, and who felt at
liberty to share its contents with the
public.
This letter has called out a reply from
the "Lower Settlement ;" a term which,
in early times we believe, meant that
section of the county lying along the
Co mulogu feel creek, and the region
ronndaboutSllver Spring. '
SUDDEN DEATII:- 0 have just been
informed of the sudden 'death of Dr. J:
`N. [tended, at Peoria, Illinois, formerly
of Carlisle. The Doctor had a paralytic
stroke about a year since, but had suffi
ciently recovered to attend to business.
On Thursday, December 7, he had a
second stroke, from the effects of which
he died on the tfollowing night at 12
_o'aloCk. The deceased was in the fifty
fifth year of his.age„ and resided in this
place for a number of years.

pital Finance Committee, the subscrip
tions taken tip by the Rev. Dr. Saundtirs
already amount to $353,000.
It has not been a 'year since Dr. Saun
ders donated his college and grounds to
establish this hospital, and entered on

operation and support it. Before he had
raised $l.OOO every one who knew his
antecedents 'foresaw his success, but

ACCIDENT.—On Saturday evening last,
the train going north on the South
Mountain; ma with an accident when
about three-quartois of a mile porth of

4 ore cars, down the embankment. Wm.
