Jonn Kiehl is a full cousin of mine ;
on Sabbath Mr. Kiehl wits arrested ; ?4r.
Snyder, Mr. Smith, turnkey and I were
in jail at Kiehl's cell. Snyder bad start
ed home and I called him back. Mr.
Smith let us into the jail. We went up
stairs, and were directed to ,the cell by
sonic prisoners who Were in the--hall.
Mr, Snyder came -to the cell first: He
called Mr. Kiehl by his first name three
times, Kiehl did not come to the door of
the cell. Then he slopped aside and I
called him once and he came to the door.
I asked him if father bad seen him, He
Said no. I told him ho was in Carlisle,
and wished to see him. Then I stepped
back and Mr. Snyder Stepped up and
talked' - to him. While he was talking to
• him Mr.'Skelley was there and I spoke to
him, Si elley requested me to go Into his
(Skelley's) cell. During this time Sny
, per was talking *With ikS _I was
ca - seing Mr. Snyder told mo tkiNte ac
used Mr. Kiehl of buying pOrnr -- Ile
said Kiehl first denierllit, but a terwards

said ho bought poison, but the it was
for rats or mice, Kiehl was standing at
the tine. with his face to the door and
Snyder was on the step of the cell, with
his face turned half round, It might
have been 18 or 20 inches front Kiehl
and Snyder. Ho spoke a little louder
than usual, on account of noise and con
fusion in the hall. 'Couldn't tell whether
Mr. Kiehl could hear it or not. The back
of Snyder's - head was almost directly to
wards Kiehl when he said this.
Cross examined.
There was a, good deal of confesion in
the hall. There might have been five or
six persons talking. There was great
confusion owing to Kiehl's coming in.
In chief.
When I came out of Skelley's
Snyder told me, iu Kiehl's presence, at
Kiehl's cell door—that he said to Kiehl
"no, you didn't buy poison for rats or
mice, but for your wife." Don't remem
ber that he told, me Kiehl's answer.
Then he stepped back from the cell and
told me I should speak to Kiehl. if I
wished to. I told hint I didn't wish to
speak to him wider the circumstances:

I live in Frankford tow ship. About
five miles from where Mr. li Mil's father
lives. 1 know John Kiehl. Have
known-him since before he was married.
I had some trausactions with the She,-
iff, and I came duivn and weni there,
somewhere about the middle of June.
Some other folks went into the jail and
I went in airing. I walked around to
where John Kielil was. I RhOOk bands
with him and asked him how ho was.
He then said lie was well. I then said,
is it possible. that I find you here. He
said it was. I then said, John Is it true
that you bought poison and gaVe it to
sour wife. He said he did buy poison,
bat didn't give it to her, lie bought It for
rats. That e tded the conversation. I
zoo not related either to Kiehl or the
Donet' family,, Have always been on
good terms with Mr. Kiehl and his
family
Cross examined,
The Sheriff's father was there, but
was not up stairs. I talked to him. I
remember what I said and did that day.
• Thinkiwasdn,a condition to remember
what I did. The Sheriff's father and
had a drink, and if I mistake not, the
Sheriffdrank along. I was sober enough
to do the busine-s I had to do, It teas
sometime in forenoon I was there, can't
tell what time. I came into town pretty
early that morning. Can't tell how
many drinks I had before I went to jail.
Didn't keep any count. I don't, remem
ber where I stopped that day.

I ant mother of Mrs. Kiehl ; I went to
, her house on Wednesday during her last
sickness; I took a box—a wooden box—
front the cupboard ; I ,opened it, saw
what wan in it, shut it, acid put it in my
pocket ; I gave it, to my husband, John
Donor ; I never .put anything in it or
saw anything put in it.
Cross examined.
I went there between 11 and 12 o'clock;
I got, the box on Thursday morning ; it
was in the kitchen cupboard ; the cup
board was not locked ; 1 thought it was
an empty box at first, but it had a little
bit of powder in it—white or yellowish,
. don't remember which"; I' didn't try to
got any - powder off ; shut it and Put it

were other medicines' there ; can't, say
what was in the clipboard ; I don't re-

Bhippensburg in cupboard at home. I
opened it. I put nothing in it nor saw
anybody put anything in. I saw it be
fore she and ',were in'Darlisle; and she
had it with her. This was about two
months before she died. Dr. Moder gave
her the medicine. Don't remember
whether there wore directions on box or
not. Don't remember whether there
was writing or printing on it. Didn't
see boi put in cupboard.

of court. I may have said to Mr. Kiehl
that I did not find anything against his
son. I was at Mr. Kiehl's house tiller

There ,was some writing on it I thiuk
it was .1 teaspoonful 3 times per day.
On receiving the box front Mr. Sadler, I
put it in My paper case and locked it
up, and kept it there till I gave it to
him. I. may have taken that box and
shown it to _Mr. Ham - a druggist. I
don't remember when he gave it to me.
Just before he went to Philadelphia,,
upon the day that you and I were at
Mr. Kiehl's, in company with Mrs. '
"eat up stairs, examined. a
bureau, we found there some boxesol
think and a chest. The chest was an
old-fashioned chest, in ono end there
were compartments with little lids, and
in that were some shaving utensils, some
other articles, and a yellow paper tied
around ith string, which, upon open
ing, I found to contain, a considerable
quantity of a brownish colored powder,
took possession of the paper, and brought
it home with ins, lucked it up in my pa

came, into the office. 'Poore was a
gentle:man and another lady with her.

his place. I asked her to walk nail the

She complwined of NV CAIIOSN; some
palpitation of the heart, seine headache
I believe. I don't .rem ember complain
ing of disease peculiar to ladies. She
complained also of HOMO indigestion. I
don't remember that she asked for the
same medicine that Zitzprgave her. She
came back front the hotel and said that
the medicine did not taste the same as
that . which Zitzer gave her. I don't
remember that she said it lout a•peculiar
taste, I don't remember of telling her
that I put something in it to diejsuise
the taste. I don't remember •ofl any
thing else occurring when she was there,
the powder was white color. Dr. Zitzer
and I have been in business together
about 5 years. ; I have an office of my
own,-about 31 sfittates from Dr. Zitzers.
If I remember, 1 think she said she was
getting along, very well with Zl6.er's
medicine, am{ I said I would Oa her n 8
near as I could, what she had been
taking, and endeavored to do so; it •was
a fine powder. 1 made it So. I know it
was Rochelle Salts, for the reason that it
*as taken from where we keep our salt
Rochelle salts'will dissolve in water.
The arsenic in Dr. Zitzer's office is
' kept under lock and key. • Whoa Dr.
Zitzer went away to California 1 know
there - was but a small- amount 'of at•-'
sonic• on hand ; 'not enough to fill a
small round box, during his absence I
used some of thearsenie, he went to Cali-,
(brunt on the 24th of April, and returned
sometime in Juno,' the box of salts I gave
Mrs.,Kichl ,I got from a drawer, under
the counter, 8110 .brought the box With
her, the powders were put loose in the
box. There was•alittle white powder in -- •
