faces, and deep black furrows ploughed
through the exploded stone work were
tipped with a brilliant ornamental gild
lug, Moro perfect thait any ovei produced
by the artistic Maid of a madter gilder.
Away into the dark recesses of ;these
once beatitiful specimens of architectural
skill, through their-now vacant.windows
streamed the rays of the reflected light,
Until fancy dispelling the horror of the
reality,.converted them into.the „fabled
• ' haunts of the fairids of romance. Some
festive celebration appeared in progress,
• andas, one listened for the strains of en
. chanting - m . 11810,A seemed "a dream, al
.----though not a dream."
Approaching the river,upoif the West
and North sides, mountains of coal were
covered with billows of tempestuous fire.
Above the bituminous, rose a crimson
colored flame, crowned with waving,
- inky black! plumes, and as the wind
partent, and blew high into the air its
sharp, spiral jets, the back ground re
sembled a-hideous impenetrable cavern,
whose entrance way `was gitarded by
'flaming swords, and glittering spears.
Fleecy waves of .puiple and whito.played
sportively above the anthracite, now
hiding and anon reappearing in fantastic
and frolichorno revelry. Shapeless
heaps of grain, rising from the remains
of towering elevators, overrun with seas
of liquid fire, glowing embers of acres of
' - destroyed:lumber, burned into brilliancy
by the steady blowing gale, the carmine
' dyed noble ruins, over which blevrelonds'
of surging light brown smoke, the whole
enveloped in a framework of golden
magnificence, combined in presenting a
picture, that language,, wielded by the
most graphic ofpens, could not describe,
nor the hand of the limner decorate in its
appropriate and variegated coloring. -
1 BY- daylight on the morning of the
tenth instant, 'the smoke had lifted, and
ere thesun had fairly risen, crowds of
people were winding their devious ways.
through once familiar and busy streets.
Looking north ; from Harrison street, as
far as-the' unaided eye could bring ob
jects within its range, there stretched
out a vast expanse of as grand ruins as
the modern world has ever seen. Ramb
. ling among the dizzy walls, here stands
the gracefully arched entrance-way of
the Bigelow House, i;vith but a remnant
-of its chaste front looming above it;
there a portion of the Corinthian archi
tecture of the Honore Block, with pillar
upOn pillar, mounting heavenward,
while sections of its galvanized iron
cornice swaying idly in the wind, chant
dolorous requiem in memory of its ex
tinct grandeur. Columns of iron lying
lazily in the rubbish, relieved of their
lately ponderous burdens, are now im
provised flues from which issue curling
blue smoke from smouldering fires be
- heath, or intermingled with binding reds
and beams of the same material, are
gathered together in " confusion %VON°
confounded." One tall chitnney marks
the former location of the Tremont
House, a few partition walls, that of the
Sherman House, while opposite the
ruins of the latter, ill mournful — though
proud prominence, the' walls of the
• Court House with their stony mottoes of I
"Peace," "Justice," Truth," "Um'
• ion" and "Liberty," remain firmly
seated- upon their foundation stories.
Scattered throughout this dreary waste,
rise pointed gables, artistic finials, and
interlacing arches-the blackened relics
of the. architecture of churches and
cathedrals, whose tall spires and musical
belfries are sleeping in their own frag
ments, the flowing tracery of whose
Gothic and Catherine wheel windows is
obliterated,' and whose door ways arc I
clogged with the wrecks of entablatures
and capitals, and the plane and fluted
shafts of crumbling marble eidumns.
Magestic turrets " lift thenfselves no
longer nearer Heaven," but, shorn of
their stateliness, and robbed of their
strength, bear the marks as of the action
of the elements for countless egos of
r.
past time
Lofty flues of former manufactories
(lot the scene, and abmit, them lie strewn
the worthless matter of costly and com
plicated machinery. .Wherever a wood
en building stood, nothing but ashes, and
a few brick of the fire flues remain.
Safes are scattered throughout the ruins,
in numbers almost countless. Parties
are working day and night in removing
thorn front the hot rubbish, in hope of
saving some portions of their contents
'Few have proven their worth, and earned
the boasted title of "Fire Kings." Metal
valuables are generally tarnished or
melted, papers crisped, and as brittle as
the most delicate glass, and all writing,
save lead pencil marks, rendered wholly
illegible. The vaults were nearly all in
sound condition, and pro-e•ved their con
tents as devoid of blemish, as when ta
ken: from them daily, in the ordinary
course of business. One notable oxbep
tion that. of the Custom House, in
front the inferiority of its con
struction,:over $1,000,000 in greenbacks,
were destroyed, and nearly half a million
in gold and silver.melted in a solid mass.
.. The civil authorities of' the city, after
long deliberation, plaCed the police in
the hands of General Sheridan, under the
-orders of the Mayor. Rumois of incen
diaries having been caught at their.hell
ish work, and hanged or spot, kept the
people in a continued -tdato of feveilsh
mmitement. Tho arrival of regular and
volunteer troops, gave the city the op-
Pparanco of a military encampment., and
broughtSercibly to mind -the streets. of.
Richmond, at the close of the war. The
.blue of the- regular forces contrasted
striingely with the gray of the Michigan
State eial,e4 and time tniiferm of Prussian
infantry, with their spiked helmets, re-.
called the stories of the occupation of
Paris.
Martial law, in a city where the civil
authorities were in tk state of lawful
• organization, was widly rumored as
having been declared, and the most
ridiculous and whimsical notions were
entertained by a part of the populace as
to the status of the city, and asserted
military governments Sheridan 'had
done this, and Sheridan had done that,
either of which thing had Sheridan done,
would have made him a ocOntemptible
fool, and sullied his well-earned reputa-
