paid to Ingersoll would have bought
34,145 chairs, and if placed in a straight

they cost $lO each they would make a

NOT TIIAT MAN BUT ANOTIIIIIR MAN
It is only by testing dates and figures
in this way that the prodigiesui frauds
necessarily involved•in the warrants wo
publish, can be brought home to the
minds of persons little accustomed to
dciaryitlfaccounts.
Who wee ved _ Rey_ reprejumted
the warrants? Moro is a letter from
one man which is pertinent to that in
quiry. In the accounts of Andrew J.
Garvey there are two warrants made out
in the name of 11..7. Hennessy for $62,-
483.18. Who and where is this Mr..
Hennessy ? Will, ho come forward?
Has he any other'ropresentative in tho

I deem it a, duty I owe my friends to

pursuits, and in no other capacity have
I ever drawn, or caused to be' drawn for

any bill or warrant to receive money,
other than my wages as a working man,

Contrary. Many of my Moods, whe aro
aware that I have boon connected with
Mr. Garvey for many years. may look
over the fact that my name is John R.
Ile . nnessey, (not It. 3. Hennessy),
,and to
such I say, draw your own conclusions.
My short career in public 'lab has net
been (hie, as many suppose, to Mr. Gar

considerable deal, of popularity. On the
contrary, when it Was found that I could
not be used to the advantage of certain
'parties, Mr. Gaivey used his infinonco
against me,' and for fio other reason than
that of being faithful. to the working

I are handsomely, said our,, and from whopo
1 windows / one gets the , finest, view in
Washington. The arrangement, of, the
table and chairs, -se ,suggestive,, of +-
liberation, led me back a few „years I to
;the solemn scenes and topics, discussed
daring the war around this same trade.
The anxious days and , painful nights of
these dark years arose, before my visis3,
and I could almost see the, rug d
features and quaint, forritof the groat
man Who sat at the.helm of , State, aild
directed its course, through: the, waters
of that troubled ,and , stormy sea.
,The
memories • gather -thick add settle
silently asjhe snow flakes around the
place made sacred and, ,hallowed by
them. How the fact,, that the man; to :
whom Mr. Lincoln trusted more than to
any other, unless it might be his great
War Minister—the one who successfully
terminated the contest for constitutional
liberty on this contiuent—is now at the
same post; of duty, establishes the idea
of the eternal fitness of things. I left
the place with its bushed and subdued
silence, rejoicing in the knowledge that
its duties had passed to tried and trusted
hands.
The Library opening out from the
Council Chamber is one dE the finest
rooms in the building, but the utter
dearth and poverty of its fil'ruishing is a
matter of surprise add painful humilia
tion. Ono -would suppose that the
President's library would be furnished
with - all the standard-works-in home and
foreign literature, which seem properly
to belong to the study of a statesman;
or might be required - for reference."
Hero We should expect to see all the
loading periodicals and newspapers of
the world ; instead Of this we find' ft few
volumes of standard works of poetry
and prose, us few encyclopedias, Con
gressional Globes find musty "Pub.
Does," Thee blooks, Army and Navy
Registers, oto.
When we consider the salary attaching
to this office, the demands to bo met
from It, the fact that the ; majority of
our Presidents have been men of limited
twins, IS contingency likely to occur
with ony ono elected to this office, would
It not be the part of in enlightened
generosity to supply him with those
things which tho situation would seem
to demand?
,
We next pass to . The family sitting
room or private parlor ; this is the place
whore the official dignity is put off for
frolic with children and chat, with wife
and. friends. The furniture in this room'
is fresh and beautiful, having just un
dergone the revamping process, , and
newly covered with an exquisite shade
of light blue - satin brocatello, with
pattern of delicate bouquets of flowers
running through it. In this room hangs
the only, portrait of a " Mrs.-Prosident,'
left as a memento of the charms and
beauty that have graced these'
Mrs.' Juhn Tyler's life size portrait speaks
eloquently upon the subjeot, and its
great beauty led me to speculate upon
the rensissnesS of Congress; not to say
ungallantry, in not making appropria-'
tions for this purpose when remember
ing to do so for the Presidents them
selves. • Think of the pleasure it wOuld
