them. This is right. Let the police do
their duty, with - regard to these. persons

don make themselves "mighty scarce."

Y'''"Onkrugitz.:lt becoming - our sad duty
'this Week, to chronicle the death of Mr.
Daild Martin, an old and respected citi
zen of this place, who breathed his last
.on Tuesday morning; after a lingerMg
'was
of three months.' ;Mr. ;Martin
'wa bom: in .Motiroo township, -this
county, but Was a resident of our bor
ough for the past, 25 ,years.. For a num
ber of years he was the proprietor of tho
"Corman," now the "Bentz" House,
and while ,liens made hosts of, friends
and acquaintances. Mr. M. was in the
seventy-second year of his ago
Ica.—Wo visited, a few days since, tho
co house of Mr. Holmes Blair, and found
the Superintendent, Mr. Levi Zeigier'and
his assistant, Mr. Mei. oigler. busily en
gaged in getting out tho frozon lumps
for theii customers.
Mir; Bliir's ice housa which is, dn-
Videdly;•tho largest in the Cumberland
Valley, holds when filled over 800 tons,
and contains at the present time some
800 tons, thus insuring the people of
Carlisle a supply during the continuance
of the warm weather.
The other dealers in this article in
town have been out for several weeks,
and had it not'been for the enterprise of
Mr. Blair in erecting his, commiidioes ice
house, we would now be dependent on'
the city for bur supply and, consequently,
would bo paying very high prices.
It is ME Blair's intention to merely
charge a fair price for his ice, not taking
van age o the 1,
business all in his own hands, and we'
hope that his investment may be a Draft
able. one.
THE RIPON CAMP MEETINO.—Tho
Ridge Camp Meeting which is now in
• progress', has boon very largely attended.
There are probably one hundred tents,
the majority of which are of canvass.
Inside of the square of the tents,,are
seats .Capable of comfortably seating
13,000 persons. Ou Sabbath last, excur
sion trains were run from Harrisburg
and Chambersburg, and His estimated
that nearly 10,000 persons were present
during the day. Notwithstanding the
vast number assembled, the utmost
order prevailed, With the exception of a
quarrel between some persons of Car,
lisle, and some rowdies of Harrisburg.
An accident occurred during the after
noon, by which a young lady, Miss Annie
Keefer,_Of Harrisburg, was seriously, if
not fatally injured;--Sre—was--invitod-tti
take a drive, by a young man of her
acquaintance from Carlisle, and during
tlio drive the front axle b c roke, throwing
them to the ground, and - hurting the
lady in the spine and , side. The camp
meeting will close on Friday, the twenty
fifth instant.
Busirmss.—Some of the leading mer
chants of this place, acting on the sug-.
gestion offered in last week's HEns.r.ryi
circulated petition, to the affect that
-all places of business would be closed
frOm 10 a. m., until 8 p. m., on-Saturday,
the mineteenth instant, to afford their
clerks an opportunity of witnessing the
dedication of the
_Soldiers' Monument.
The petition was very generally signed,
the merchants closing their stores at the
hour names. But we are compelled to
pay that a number of them violated the
stipulated agreement; for scarcely had
tho Benediction been pronounced, when
certain prominent merchants opened up,
their stores, regardless of the petition
they had signed, while a nnmbor of
others, on the_ other_ hand, kept' their
doors closed until three o'cloCk.
It is with groat reluctance that we re
vert to this matter, but justice to the
business mon that kept "closed &Ors"
compels us to notice it. This is the first
time, we believe, our business mon have
been requested to close, excepting on
public holidays, and in due respect, to
the memory of our " fallen' bravo," we
,think there might, with propriety, have
been a general suspension of business
during the hours named in the petition.
