Dims'rnous FIRE.—On Sabbath after
noon last, about two o'clock, the largo
frame stable of Carey, W. Ahl, esq., on ,
the York road, was discovered to be on
firoomd before assistance could arrive
from town the building was burned to
the ground. . The alarm was promptly
- given;' I;nd the firemen repaired to the
scene of conflagration, but upon - roach
ing• the ground a new difficulty was ea;
counteivd, owing to the groat scarcity
of water. The Cumberland attempted
to obtain water from Mr. James W.
Bosler's barn yard on -the oppisite side'
of the road, but this supply was found
to be inadequate. In consequence of
this the firemen could 'do nothing, ex
cepting to pull down the standing..
timbers. In fact the day was intensely
'hot, and the heat from the fire rendered
it almost unendurable tn-approaeb
within aleasonable distance. Air. Ald's
loss is considerable, being fully $l,OOO,
partly covered by, an insurance. It may
be summed up as folloWs ; A large
quantity of hay, oats and grain ; also a
'valuable young grey racking horse. Tho
origin of the fire is unknown, although
it is very generally conceded to have
originated from spontaneous combus
tion. As the mow had just been filled
with hay last week, and the flames were
first seen issuing from this part of the
stable"; this scents - to be a ;Very plausible
story.
Crncus Comrto.—Oti Thursday last,
E. 111. Sage, advance agent of the justly
celebrated New York State Circus,
arrived in this place, and during his short
stay was engaied in contracting for
advertising and posting bills, &c. From
the advertisement, which appears in
another column of the present issue, wo
learn that this unequalled entertainment
will give two performances in this place,
on-Friday, August 13, afternoon and
evening. ,
ins manunotli — dompany is novcon its
annual Summer tour, having recently
visited the Western country. The
Director, Dr. Stevens, takes great,satis..
faction in announcing that by the in
trodug, tion of now and celebrated artists,
this celebrated metropolitan troupe has
been enabled to prepare an entire new
programme of performances for the
present season, entirely different from
those of other companies traveling at
'this time.
The press of New York city, as well
as the leading journals of every city
which the New York State Circus has
ever visited, have concurred in pronounc
ing it the finest - organization of the kind
on this continent. Among the list of
stars we notice the name of Billy
Worrell, acknowledged to be the champ
ion clown and comic man of the arena ;
also, Master Tommy, the famous man
monkey. The dwarf, Nehamo, the most
astonishing Contortionist in the world. -
The entire company appears at each
entertainment, in the grandestokposition
of daring-bareback riding and wondets
of athletic skill ever witnessed on this
continent. Novel and interesting exhi
bitions of sagacity and training by an
unequalled - collection of_ performing
horses, ponies, clogs and mules. - -
The cavalcade will make its grand
entry on the"Stritc Road, as they exhibit
in Newvllle, on Thursday, (the day
previous,) the seventeenth instant, be
tween 9 and IQ o'clock a. in., beaded by
the Gorgeous Dragon Chariot, costing
$B.OOO, followed by the Equestrian
Artists,, mounted on gaily caparisoned
steeds. •
The cavalcade, entering town in grand
Procession, will be beaded, as above
stated, by . the Golden Dragon Chariot,
the, most magnificent specimen of art
and elaborate workmanship ever parade&
before the public, splendidly caparisoned,
and driven and controlled, by 0. P.
Dart, the champion Whipist, containing
Professor Mantz's New York opera
band. Then follow the riders, dressed
in oriental costumes of exceeding rich
ness and beauty, after which will come
the magnificent wagons and vans. In
fact every thing is in perfect keeping,
And nothing is 'left undone to secure
that which it has long since won—that of
being the ' best circus in the world.
Remember the day and date. Ad
mission 50 cents ; children, under 10
years of ago, 25 cents, for further
